Target Stores Coupon Policy

Coupons are a great way to save even more when shopping with us, and it’s easy to use them at our stores.  When accepting coupons, we follow the guidelines below.

Manufacturer and Target Coupons:

  • Target accepts one Manufacturer Coupon and one Target Coupon for the same item (unless prohibited by either coupon).
  • We reserve the right to accept, refuse, or limit the use of any coupon.
  • Limit of 4 identical coupons per household, per day (unless otherwise noted on coupon).
  • All valid coupons should be presented to the cashier during checkout.
  • Item purchased must match the coupon description (brand, size, quantity, color, flavor, etc.).
  • Coupon amount may be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied.
  • We can’t give cash back if the face value of a coupon is greater than the purchase value of the item.
  • All applicable sales taxes are paid by the guest at the full value of the item.
  • These guidelines apply to all coupons accepted at Target (Color Checkout Coupons, Internet Coupons, Mobile Coupons, Mailed Coupons, Coupons from Newspapers and Magazines, etc.).

Internet (Print-at-Home) Coupons:

  • We gladly accept valid internet coupons that contain a clear and scannable bar code.
  • We do not accept internet coupons for free items with no purchase requirements.

Mobile Coupons:

  • Guests can receive Target Mobile Coupons by signing up for Text Alerts at Target.com/mobile or by texting COUPONS to 827438 (TARGET).
  • Message and data rates may apply.  See site for full details.
  • To redeem, simply show your coupon barcode to the cashier.  With one simple scan, all applicable coupons are applied.

Buy One Get One Free Coupons (BOGO):

  • BOGO coupons cannot be combined (i.e. you cannot use two BOGO coupons on two items and get both for free). Unless stated otherwise on the coupon, the use of one Buy One Get One Free coupon requires that two of the valid items are presented at checkout of which one item will be charged to the guest and the 2nd item will be discounted by its full retail price.
  • A second cents-off coupon of the same type cannot be redeemed towards the purchase price of the first item.
    • If a Target BOGO coupon is used, one additional manufacturer coupon may be used on the first item.
    • If a Manufacturer BOGO coupon is used, one additional Target coupon may be used on the first item.

  • Returns of items purchased using Manufacturer Coupons may receive coupon value returned in the form of a Target GiftCard.

  • Coupons are void if copied, scanned, transferred, purchased, sold, prohibited by law, or appear altered in any way.
  • We regularly monitor the Coupon Information Corporation (CIC) website for counterfeit coupons.  We do not accept counterfeit coupons.
  • We can’t accept coupons from other retailers, or coupons for products not carried in our stores.
  • Some items may not be available at all stores.
  • We do not accept expired coupons.
  • We do not accept Canadian coupons in our US stores.

Target Price Matching with Coupons:

Can I use coupons when price matching?

A guest can use coupons when price matching per Target’s normal coupon policy. When the guest presents a coupon(s), these steps will be followed:

  • Manufacturer Coupons:
    • Manufacturer coupons will be applied after the price match is made.
  • Target Coupons:
    • Target coupons will be applied before the price match is made. If the competitor price is still lower than the price after the Target coupon has been deducted, the ad match can be adjusted to match the competitor’s price.
  • Combining both a Target and Manufacturer Coupon:
    • The Target coupon will be applied before the price match is made. If the competitor price is still lower than the price after the Target coupon has been deducted, the ad match can be adjusted to match the competitor’s price. Once the price match is made the manufacturer coupon will be applied.

Does any one know if you can use a coupon on a item that will be free (example: buy 2 Pantene shampoos and receive a Free Pantene styler)

I have a suggestion for an add to the policy. The “Returns” section addresses manufacturer’s coupons, but not Target coupons. I recently had a situation where I learned the hard way that Target does not do “even exchanges” and they do not consider Target coupons in the exchange. Basically, you lose the value of the coupon. So for example, let’s say you buy a shirt for $15.99 and you used a Target coupon worth $2 off. You realize when you get home that the shirt is not the best fit and so you go back to the store to exchange it for a larger size. Target will refund you $13.99 and then they will charge you $15.99 for the larger size. So you lose the value of the $2.00 coupon because Target does not do “even exchanges”. They will only do a return and repurchase.

Target does offer even exchanges on most items. Perhaps the team member did not process it correctly because they didn’t know how? Did you talk to a manager when you were there?

@Iggy yes, we do that every time we go and haven’t received any issues :-) That’s how you get the good deals and cut money out of pocket… Per each transaction.

So can I use a staples coupon for the iPad Air promotion they have going on right now and get the $100 gift card?

No Target does not take competitor coupons

Can you use a Target gift card that you received as part of a deal to pay for another deal and receive another giftcard?

can I use 2 or 3 internet coupons in 1 transaction?? ex buy 3 deodorants. Use 2 1$/1 and $1.50/1. Is that allowed???

Can I use more than 1 like TQ? It says on their coupon policy that limit 4 like coupons, however on the coupon I printed out ($1/1 Windex item) – limit one coupon or offer for guest. I want to buy enough windex products to get a gift card.

Can you use a internet coupon (not one from Target) and manufacturer coupon together for one item or must it be one Target and one manufacturer

when you buy a product where you receive a $5 0r more gift card back can you use it right away on another purchase? Never couponed at target before.

Yes, but on a seperate transaction.

I just spoke with a lady at target corporate 800-440-0680 and she said if target shouldn’t be refusing to reduce the price of a coupon just because it’s more than the product so if u have the issue again I suggest you call this 800 number or force the manager to call

wondering does anyone have problems with Target  when
using a coupon that exceeds the value of a product? I have read there
coupon policy on this matter and this is what it say’s….( Coupon
amount may be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other
discounts or coupons are applied.) pretty straight forward right? well
they refused to reduce the value of my coupon today normally I don’t
have any issues with them… I shop there 4 to 5 times a week and this
has got me very upset…I even called and talked to the manager on duty and it was the same one that told me they couldn’t reduce the amount of coupons when I was in the store… i read him the policy on it and he refused to budge… any suggestions on how I should go forward on this issue.

I too had the same problem. Was trying to redeem a coupon. Item was on clearance, coupon exceeded price. I asked for the coupon to be adjusted. They refused (2 guest services). I state per your policy, you can adjust the coupon. They kept refusing, saying they weren’t going to pay me. I stated, I’m paying tax so what is the concern? The associates were rude & refused to let me get the items.

I don’t see specifically where it says that Target accepts coupons on free items, I’ve had trouble with this lately.  Can you let me know where that is, so that I can point it out to them if I have trouble?!!  I want to make sure I can get this awesome CPK deal!

I would like to know this too.

Can you use mobile coupons more than once?

No, once used the mobile coupon will go gray and say ‘Redeemed’. Sometimes it won’t say it right away, but by the next day.

The coupon policy mentions BOGO coupons, but I’m not clear on using coupons with BOGO sales…

If there is a Buy-One-Get-One Free SALE at Target, can you use two similar coupons?

When buying a bogo, can you have two coupons, one for each item? I know some targets will let you and others won’t. so what is the policy on bogos and coupons?

Is there a limit at how many $5 gift cards target will give you for the weekly ad deals?

Can Target coupons be used at other stores? I printed some for food items I want to get at Safeway. When they printed there wasn’t an exp. date are there coupons weekly if so what is the cycle? I printed ones out today I want to use them on Tues. Thanks

what if i show up on the weekend? target guest relations is closed. i had an issue where the register denied my coupons because there was a deal with the store already present on the items. i was gonna buy 2 disposable razor packets and you’d get a target 5 dollar gift card for purchasing the 2. well the register would take one coupon for .98 and would not take the second coupon. was a disaster!! the manager could not even help me and guest relations was closed!

I had a question about a purchase I made. I had the BOGO Herbal Essence shampoo get a styler . So I bought the shampoo that happened to be on clearance w/ styler for $2.78 and then the styling products were 2.99. When she rang them up, they said they couldn’t do the 2.99 price for the styler, so they took the price of the shampoo (2.78) off. Is that correct? I don’t see where the policy states that. The coupon was for a free style product and those were 2.99.

Just wondering if there is something in writing about using a BOGO and another single coupon?

So just to clarify-
I can use more than one manf coupoon per transaction…regardless of what the Target Associate says? I get so frustrated when I have to separate my 10 bottles of Sobe lifewater into separate transactions! I understand that I can only use one Target coupon per transaction, it says so on the coupon. But they make me separate manf coupons into separate transaction!

I am a Target team member and want to let you know there is new software that screws up coupons. When you use coupons watch the screen very carefully because it will adjust some down for no reason, and not just on “free” items. Make sure you hand over the higher value coupons first. I was shopping today and had a $2 coupon go in for 94 cents. The cashier had to void out all coupons and do the $2 one first and then they went in fine. Also, my store has a “buy 4, get a $5 gift card” promo for Schick hydro razors and shave cream. I had a $5 coupon for the razor and 3 $1 coups for 3 shaving creams. The computer would only allow my coupons to be used up to $5.94 no matter what order they went in. My GSTL tried to override it for me but the system wouldn’t allow it. It said something about “maximum coupon value exceeded”.

Hey KCLadies. I have a few questions for you in regards to Targets coupon policy. I went into my store tonight and made a purchase of a pack of diapers. I proceeded to hand the cashier my target.com coupon and my manufacturer coupon (that I printed from huggies on facebook). She rang in the target.com one and then the second one beeped. She said I can’t take two coupons for 1 item. I proceeded to explain to her that one was a target.com coupon I had printed and yes she could take both of them as it is targets policy. Well 30 minutes later I walked out of there only using 1 coupon because she said she could not take it and so did her manager that had worked at Target for 10 years. What is the deal. They acted like I was doing something wrong? Please help me understand what the policy is as she said they were both considered manufacturer coupons. HELP. I am outraged at Target and really don’t want to shop there again after this mess.

Some of the Target.com coupons are manufacturers coupons and not “target” coupons even if they have the target logo on them. there’s no way to tell which it is until you print them, but they will either say “Manufacturer coupon” or “Target Web coupon” on the top.

Coupons are a great way to save.Just remember not to clear the shelves, everbody likes to save. Some of Targets coupons are not redeemable with a Target promotional offer ie: $5 gift cards. You can use the manufacture coupon, but it does state on the Target coupon not to be combined with Target’s promotional offers. You are already getting a deal with the gift card.so remember to be patient we are all learning about the great savings that coupons have to offer. Happy shopping.

Sorry, one more. I was reading the last post and was wondering if anyone knew what the new policy was for Target web coupons that pcchavezelc mentions?

You may use a super Target coupon at any Target store. They should be happy t accept them.

I too have recently embraced the Target coupon savings game and had two questions:

1) Has anyone ever dealt with a cashier that enforced the "limit one offer per transaction" restriction on Target web coupons? I.e., you bought two items and used two (printed) copies of the same Target coupon for both, but was only allowed to use one of the coupons?

2) Is there any specific policy on using SuperTarget web coupons at a "regular" Target store? I tried using one the other day, not even realizing there was a difference, and they would not accept it.

Ok here's how it goes. As a GSTL for over 10 yrs at Target. It goes just as corporate policy states. You can use 2 coupons per item, not transaction. 1 target coupon and or one manufacturers coupon. There is a new policy in effect with regard to internet coupons but it is for Target coupons. There were some coupons being made up on the internet for items that were not made by Target for those items. Theft always causes problems. But we must remember not everyone we come in contact with is a thief. You can use manuf. coupons for trial size items as long as it does not state that. The cashier has a key on the register to change the coupon price and yes some stores do not train their team members correctly just as can happen anywhere. Just remember guests be polite and not rude. Politeness gets you miles and if the GSTL or ETL on duty don't know their policy have them get corporate or the district office on the phone at customer service for you so they can get educated then and there & hopefully they'll take it as a coaching lesson and be thankful to you the guest and that they made you happy and will continue to shop and their Target store because they need to remember you make their paycheck and without great guest service they wont have a paycheck.

I to had an issue today trying to use my last 2 Johnson and Johnson red cross coupons on the trial size first aid kit. the cashier told me that it is less than my coupon that she couldn't allow the use of the coupon. I have always used them like that there before but to save argument cause I didn't have my policy with me I just told her that's okay take the the first aid kits back off my total….. And then I went across the street and used it on the trial size at Wal-mart where it was .97 instead of .99 like it was at target and I didn't even have a hassle.

I went to Target today and am still shaking after the way I was treated. I went to purchase various things and some of them were the travel size. My coupons did not exclude travel sizes. The problem arose when the item was less than the coupon amount. ie: $.99 Nexcare Bandaids and the coupon was for $1.00. They should have just done a price adjustment to make it $.99 but they said they couldn't do it. I had my corporate coupon policy armed and ready and showed it to them. Then they said that my coupon only showed the 40ct in the picture even though it read in the text that it was good on ANY NEXCARE Product. Finally after about 30 minutes of hassle and me showing them their policy again and again the supervisor finally just did it for me. He didn't say a word to me and then walked away. The cashier that was next to him was shaking her head as if she couldn't believe he was doing it for me. Then she threw my stuff off to the side and started ringing up the next person in line. I then told her, "Thank you and here is a copy of your corporate coupon policy for you and your manager and thank you again for being so kind." She glared at me as I walked away. Needless to say neither she nor her manager told me "Thank you for shopping at Target". I am just so tired of being treated like a second class citizen because I am smart enough to use coupons! Why doesn't Target teach their cashiers how to do a price adjustment on a coupon?

Today while trying to use a coupon at Target I was told that they don’t take manufacture printable coupons. Does anyone know if that is true? They still took it but told me that they don’t have a contract with the manufacturer to get credit for the internet printable coupons. I emailed the question on target.com so hopefully I will get a reply.

Amy, good luck on your trip. Let us know how it goes!

Thank you so much for posting this! I’m actually kind of scared to take coupons to Target… I’ve read about a million horror stories. I’m making my first “couponing at Target” trip tomorrow. Crossing my fingers, lol! :)

Thank you! I’m going to link up to this post in my weekly Target posts. :-)

Kelly- most of Targets printable coupons say limit one per transaction, so technically they could still have you do several transaction….

Thanks so much! One question:
Does this mean that they will take more than one coupon per transaction now? Like when they did the cranberry juice they would combine the coupons but made you buy each juice in a seperate transaction.

You rock Joanie – this is awesome. I too have cringed about going to get things at Target in the past! Thanks for your work on this!
