Albertson's Selling to Associated Foods in Utah

Posted in: Uncategorized  //  Comments (29)

I have sad news for all of you Utah Couponers… Albertson’s announced this morning that they will be selling 36 of their stores in Utah to Associated Foods.
Their Press Release Said:

SUPERVALU announced today that it reached an agreement with Associated Food Stores for the sale of the majority of its Albertsons stores located in Utah. The sale will include 36 Albertsons stores in Utah and their respective pharmacies and fuel centers, with the exception of three St. George-area stores which will remain Albertsons and continue to be operated by SUPERVALU.

The Associated Food Stores Inc., had this to say in their press release:

Shoppers will begin noticing improvements in phases over the next few months. Associated Food Stores expects to offer employment to substantially all Utah store-level associates from the 36 stores it is acquiring. Currently Associated Food Stores employs over 5,000 people, primarily in Utah.

Richard Parkinson, president and CEO, Associated Food Stores, said this transaction will help the company better serve customers in the Utah area.

“We are excited about these stores joining our great company,” said Parkinson. “Having served this market for 70 years, Associated Food Stores supplies local grocers who represent the only locally owned and operated grocery stores in Utah. We feel our experience and expertise will be beneficial to these new stores as well.”

It sounds like all you Utah Ladies have some changes in store for you! Orem and West Jordan stores are not being sold to Associated Foods but they are looking for buyers. The stores in St. George will continue to be owned by Supervalu as will all the stores in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.

Coupon Ethics Discussion

Posted in: Uncategorized  //  Comments (61)
As we delve deeper into the world of coupons, we run into more and more

There is plenty of money to be saved and a plethora of deals to be had, all without crossing the line or being a dishonest couponer. No one wants to compromise their integrity all for an extra $0.50 off a bottle of dishsoap!
The purpose of this post is to make you aware of some of the gray areas and allow you to hear each others’ opinions on these topics.
  • Buying Coupons Online: Technical illegal to sell and “void if transferred”, but WIDELY held to be acceptable.
My Opinion: I buy coupons online often.

  • Peelie Stealer: Taking a peelie for your binder? Taking a peelie off one sized product to use on a smaller size product (still allowed by coupon)?
My Opinion: I use peelies on smaller size of same product.

  • Returning Items purchased with coupons: What if you buy 4 deodorants for your husband and you take them home and he hates them. What to do with the other 3? Is it okay to return items purchased with coupons?
My Opinion: NEVER okay to buy with intent to return. If you have a legitimate reason to make a return, I’m not so sure. I returned items purchased with coupons when I was new, but now I try to buy carefully so as not to ever have to return items. My opinion is there are still exceptions: I had a case of All laundry detergent purchased with coupons and I just got a new washer/dryer that requires high efficiency detergent. I took my unopened detergent to the store and did a return/exchange for the different variety of detergent. The bottom line is, once you purchase an item and use a coupon- the store submits the coupon and the reimbursement process begins. If you take your receipt to return the item, they can clearly see you paid with a coupon, but they can’t give you the coupon back- so that coupons becomes as good as cash.
My opinion: Purchasing with intent to return= fraud. Otherwise, if you have to make a return, tell the store you purchased with coupon and let them sort out how they want to refund you.
  • Using Expired Coupons: This one has some gray within gray, how expired is it? I am sure I have used a coupon without realizing it’s expired, but it’s not something I will ever knowingly do.
My Opinion: Bad, don’t do it!
  • BarCode Decoding: Learning how a cash register reads a coupon in order to sneak coupons past the register by using them for products for which they were not intended. There is value in learning about barcodes as long as your knowledge is used correctly. Decoders justify their actions by insisting the stores will be reimbursed anyway.
My opinion: BLACK- this is not okay!
  • Photocopying Coupons: Actually an easy mistake for a new or uneducated coupon lady, but this is illegal!
My opinion: BLACK- Don’t do it!
  • Making and selling fraudulent Coupons: Have a nice life- in jail!

Have an opinion or another gray area to discuss, like tearpads, etc? Leave a comment. Please keep comments & responses toward each other respectful.

Krazy in the Kitchen: Cooking with Dr. Pepper!

Posted in: Uncategorized  //  Comments (5)
http://krazycouponlady.net/kclicon3.jpg

How many cases of Dr. Pepper have you bought this week? You only have one more day to get cheap Dr. Pepper. Read how here and here!

CAFE RIO PORK BARBACOA

5-6 lb. pork roast
21 oz. Dr. Pepper (or Coke, do NOT use diet soda)
1 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup white sugar
1 clove garlic, minced
7 oz. can chipotle chilies in adobo sauce
6-ish oz. red taco sauce (I used hot)
1 tsp dry mustard
1 tsp cumin
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

Place roast in crock-pot, cover half-way with water and cook on low for 12 hours. (I started my Pork Adventure at midnight and everything worked out perfectly for Sunday dinner at 6:00 pm.) After 12 hours, drain pork (retain liquid if you want sauce for burritos, simply mix with a can of verde enchilada sauce and away you go).
Mix remaining ingredients until sugar dissolves. I didn’t keep the actual chilies, I dumped the can into a bowl and added enough Dr. Pepper to get all the sauce off of the chilies, then I tossed them. I also rinsed out the can with Dr. Pepper for more adobo goodness. My version had a fairly good kick to it, but if you LOVE hotness, then blend everything + 2 or 3 chilies in the blender. (Also, the adobo sauce tends to stain plastic, using a glass or metal mixing bowl will make your clean-up of adobo sauce considerably less frustrating).
Thank you Heidikins Cooks! For step by step instructions go see and her tomatillo dressing visit her site!

DR. PEPPER RIBS

For the rub:
1/4 cup of salt
1/4 cup of black pepper
1/4 cup of brown sugar
4 teaspoons of mustard powder
1/2 teaspoon of cayenne
2 teaspoons of anjo chili powder
1/2 teaspoon of allspice

For the glaze:
2 cups of Dr Pepper
1 cup of ketchup
1/2 cup of mustard
1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons of molasses
4 teaspoons of smoked paperika

Two racks of St Louis ribs
1/4 cup of Dr Pepper

Coat the ribs with the rub, wrap in plastic and place in the refrigerator for at least four hours.

Heat the oven to 300 degrees and bring the ribs to room temperature.

In a foil-lined large baking or roasting pan, arrange the ribs with the meat side up, pour in 1/4 cup of Dr Pepper, cover pan tightly with foil and place in the oven.

Meanwhile, place all the glaze ingredients in a pan, bring to a boil and then simmer for 20 minutes until thick and syrupy.

After an hour and a half, take the ribs out of the oven and spread some of the glaze on each side of the racks. Place back in the oven, meat side up and cook uncovered for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes, take out the ribs and spread more glaze over them and cook for 30 more minutes or until ribs are desired tenderness.

At this point, take the ribs out of the oven, spread more glaze on them and then cook each side under the broiler for four minutes.

CHOCOLATE CHERRY DR. PEPPER CUPCAKES

2 ¼ cups of Dr. Pepper
2 cups of sugar
2½ cups of cake flour
2 eggs
4 ounces of unsweetened chocolate
½ cup of diced maraschino cherries
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup of unsalted butter (2 sticks)
pinch of salt
1/2 teaspoons of vanilla
¼ cup sour cream Preheat oven to 325º. In a medium size sauce pan bring Dr. Pepper & cherry syrup to a boil. Place chocolate and butter into a bowl and pour hot Dr. Pepper over, cover and let sit for 10 minutes. Whisk mixture till smooth. Stir in sugar, salt, baking soda, baking powder, vanilla, and sour cream. Add flour in 2 parts alternating with the eggs and whisk till smooth. The mixture will be runny. Fill cupcakes cups and bake approximately 15-20 minutes or until skewer comes out clean

Thanks to PrissyCook for both above recipes. Go get her recipe for the swiss meringue buttercream frosting with Kirsch.

DR. PEPPER PEANUT BRITTLE

Ingredients:
1 1/4 cups of sugar
3/4 cups of butter (1 1/2 sticks)
1 1/2 teaspoons of salt
1/2 teaspoon of cayenne
1/4 cup of Dr Pepper
2 cups roasted and salted peanuts, shelled
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda

Method:
1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Combine all the ingredients except for the baking soda in a pot, cook on medium heat and bring to a boil stirring often.
3. When the temperature reaches 290 degrees, remove from heat and stir in soda. Mixture will foam up and double in size.
4. Spread mixture thin on baking sheet using a silicone spatula.
5. When mixture cools and hardens (about half an hour), break into pieces and serve.
Makes 1 1/2 pounds or enough to feed you and a couple of other people
