Albertsons Promo Explained

Posted in  //  Albertsons, Couponing Basics  //  Comments (40)

We have received several emails asking about the Albertsons General Mills Promo that starts on Wednesday.

Here is a breakdown of how it works.  Leave your questions in the comments and we’ll help you out!

‘OYNO Promo’
Spend $30, Save $15 On your next order (OYNO)
Your total before coupons and tax is $30, then present any coupons and pay. With your receipt your cashier will hand you a Catalina coupon worth $15.00 off your next order. These Catalinas can be rolled. This means you can do one transaction, receive the Catalina, do another identical transaction, Pay with the first Catalina and a new Catalina will still print. Often, OYNO promo’s can potentially be ‘moneymakers’. If you get your out of pocket price to be very low with coupons, then you can make money because you will receive the Catalina your next order.
You CAN NOT put two orders of $30 in 1 transaction and receive 2 $15 Catalina.

______________________________________________

Many of you also have questions about our Math:

promo ex.This line is the Sales Price
The 3 links are possible coupons you can use. You can only use 1 coupon per item- but we list all available coupons, so you can print multiples in you’d like.

The Final Price Reflects the Catalina Savings.
We break it down this way because most often KCLs will do multiple transactions.  Your Out Of Pocket will be high for the first transaction, but every subsequent transaction, you will be using the $15 Catalina Coupon to lower your OOP.  So- one more time: The Final Price is assuming you are using a $15 Catalina to pay.

Last time Albertsons ran this type of sale the cashier told me the total to get the catalina was AFTER coupons. She told me if I used my coupons my total would be lowered and I wouldn’t get the catalina. Is each store policy different? Or is there a store policy that addresses this type of sale somewhere? What do I do?

  • Charlene

It is definitely before coupons, they coupon should print automatically once you pay. Ours has a long lag time from the time you pay until it actually prints, so you might need to hang around a minute or two to get it.

  • Beth

I’ve run into this problem multiple times and on occasion have had to argue with cashiers about the before or after coupons. Once I had a manager give me a $15 store credit because the Catalina didn’t print and they were blaming it on the fact that I used coupons. Another time I went and called the Catalina company (was on hold for a LONG time but they ended up mailing them to me and gave me an extra $5 off Catalina). I’ve stood in the store watched my mom go through with her groceries in front of me and have her total before coupons meet the requirement, use her coupons and then her total was like $6 and her Catalina printed. I went through with the same groceries and the same coupons, did exactly the same thing and mine didn’t print and the cashier tried to tell me it was because I used coupons. Now that just doesn’t make sense! I like the Catalina promos but they can be frustrating.

  • Jenny

Thanks for the advice on this. I think I’ll just go ahead and use the coupons and see what happens and if I need to I can speak to the manager or the catalina company. Last time when the cashier told me it wouldn’t work with coupons she was very nice about it, but I think maybe she didn’t know the correct policy. It was just really frustrating and a big let down on what could have been a really good deal. Thanks again everyone!

  • Sara B

So how many times can you roll over Catalinas? Is there a limit? Especially when you have money makers you could do this several times.

  • http://www.arindance.blogspot.com Arin

when i print off the yoplus yogurt coupons the $1 off isn’t showing up on the coupon-will albertsons still take it?? The bar code and watermark are both on the coupons-i am not sure what the deal is-wondering if anyone else is having this issue?

  • http://www.arindance.blogspot.com Arin

    it’s the smartsource coupon for yoplus..not coupons.com

  • Keri

I’m still not getting this. How is that a moneymaker? You spent $25.97 ($18.01 + $7.96) and ended up with a $15 Catalina. Wouldn’t that be spending $10.97? The per-item price you list is calculated using the Catalina yielded by the same purchase, so how would the second transaction be a moneymaker? That’s factoring in the Catalina from 2 transactions. Trying to understand….

    • drew

You end up with two $15 catalina’s =$30. You paid total OOP $25.97. That is money making.

      • Keri

The OOP total included the first $15 Catalina from transaction 1, which was used in transaction 2. After using one $15 Catalina and paying $25.97, you have only one Catalina left.

      • Katie

Keri I agree it is not a money maker because you are still out of pocket $10.97. I totally agree with you but over all it is still a good deal! I read the comments just becasue I noticed that and was frustrated it said moneymaker.

  • Heidi

Any suggestions as to which items are best to use in the first transaction? It seems like you should pick the items that have the highest value coupons to go with them so you hit your $30 mark (before coupons) but then the lowest possible OOP to generate your first Catalina. What do you all think?

Also, last time I took advantage of an Albertsons Catalina deal, I asked someone working in customer service if the $30 was before or after coupons and she told me after… but I didn’t believe her. So I did one transaction to test my theory and I was right.

My thought process was that if Albertsons was going to insist that your $30 be after coupons, they would need to make that VERY CLEAR to the average customer (who is likely NOT a super couponer) and would likely put a line in the ad that stated as such. Plus, I think it would make it difficult for the average customer to calculate their total with coupons before they got to the checkout line. They’d end up with many disappointed customers who leave with a bad feeling about Albertsons – which wouldn’t be a good customer service move. Just my 2 cents…

  • Deborah

Thanks for all of the info about this sale. I love your website! I have a kind of unrelated question. I have some manufacturer’s coupons that I got in the mail from Alb. They say redeem at Albertson’s, but they also say manufacturer’s coupon. Can I redeem these at other stores?

    • Karen

No, you can only use them at Albertsons

  • Me

I have been told that the cashier needs to hit total before you hand over coupons – this will trigger the catalina machine. Then the coupons come off as ‘payment’. Once I held my coupons back and make sure they hit total I’ve been fine.

Also – sometimes the catalinas are only for certain items and not all – ie not every single type of progressive soup. If you had even 1 item that wasn’t part of the promo you wouldn’t have the $30.00 and wouldn’t get the catalina.

I have not seen a UPC list for this promo – I hope one surfaces.

  • Micaila

I did the buy 2 get $2 OYNO catalina last week at Alb. I did 5 transactions, on 2 different registers and NO catalina printed. However, I went to CS and since they couldn’t figure out why not they gave me the $10 cash! Wahoo!

    • Amber

Coupon virgin here! This seems like a great deal to get started out on. However, What does OYNO mean and are catalina’s the coupon things that are on the back of your receipt?
If I only buy a few of the items like the cookies and progresso soups, can the rest of the transaction be regular stuff to get the catalina, and would the second transaction have to include at least one general mills product to qualify again? Or would I have to get more?
How long is the catalina valid for after the last transaction.

  • http://www.TheCouponClippers.com Rachael Woodard

It is NOT a money maker if you count your first transaction where you had no $15 catalina.

None of these things are money makers if you don’t need the product. Remember that it takes money to print coupons, order coupons and drive to the stores. So, just be sure you can use the products!

  • kristen

On some of these coupons it says only one coupon per transaction. Can you use two of the same coupons in one transaction?

    • Sara

One Per item, per transaction. You can use 2 of the same if you have 2 of the same items. One coupon per item.

Or if you have a coupon stating $1/3….than only 1 coupon per 3 items. You can use as many coupons as you have multiples of 3.

      hope that helps.

  • Sara

I appreciate this post, and the comments.
I think some of us get all caught up with whether we get doublers or not. In reality….this is a great sale withOUT doublers, and with….well that is just SWEET.

As for a few comments made…..Catalina deals such as this one, the total is always BEFORE coupons. A lesson for new couponers….never hand your coupons over until after all the groceries have been rung up. Then after that, hand over any catalina’s you’ll use or your form of payment. But never fear the total, in this case $30, is BEFORE coupons.

Now whether the catalina will actually print will depend on if the machine is working properly. On the rare occasion that has happened to me, just talk to a manager….since it is advertised, and if you have all participating items, they have to honor it somehow.

Lesson’s I’ve learned….just try to use the coupons no matter what….get a manager if you need to…..it doesn’t hurt to try, the worst thing that can happen is you don’t get the coupon’s value discount, but the best thing is you can get a great deal.
I’ve also learned the 3 P’s go a long way with a cashier who doesn’t know the policy. Polite, Persistance, Patience.

GREAT DEAL on Dr. Pepper!!!!! I just stopped a alby’s for the DP deal. It is buy 2 get 2 free. They ae on sale for $5.29 each, so with tax it was $11.22. But…I received a $5 catalina from Dr. Pepper and a $5 catalina from Alby’s so I got 4 12 packs for $1.22 WOOHOOOO!

    • Johnnie

      Tabitha -
Thanks for mentioning this..I did this yesterday and my catalina didnt print.. I just figured I mis-read the offer and therefore didnt get the catalina.
Im going to take my receipt back to the store and ask why I didnt get one.. maybe try it again.

  • Tara

I’m new, so maybe a silly question…but, can the $15 catalina be used on anything in the next purchase, or do you have to use it on only General Mills promotion stuff?

    • Heather

The Catalina can be used on most in store items. I think they usually exclude tobacco, lottery and sometimes dairy…

  • Stacey

The coupon I printed for Viva paper towels says $.50 off of two big rolls. So I guess they would be $.75 when factoring in the catalina.

  • lu chandler

i just came back pocatello albie’s and catalinas did NOT print out. after of 15 mins of trying to figure out why and calling corporate w/o response they decided to give me a store credit to solve the issue. call before heading to albie today to make sure catalina machine is working AND verified if it is $30 BEFORE or AFTER coupon- cuz they tried to claim since i used coupon that it might be why. i told them i do this promo all the time BEFORE coupons and NEVER had a problem before!!!!

  • Sara B

so does anyone know how many times you can roll the catalinas?

  • Denise

Here in So cal, I did a deal a couple of weeks ago where it said the total had X, and it specifically said in the ad, BEFORE coupons. This ad specifically says AFTER coupons. Check the fine print of the ad. You ad may not have any fine print, but I am prepared to get $30 after coupons. (Buying diapers will be most of it.)

  • lu chandler

Denise, i just checked our ad and there is no fine print about whether is BEFORE or AFTER coupons . and sara b- u can roll the catalina as many times a u want- counting on of course no empty shelves!

    • Denise

our so-cal ad says: “minimum purchase requirement excludes manufacturer coupons…” I looked up the twin falls idaho ad and saw no such language. I interpert “excludes” as meaning you have to have $30 after all the coupons, am I wrong?

      • Kendra

I think you are misinterpreting that. If the min purchase requirement EXCLUDES manuf coupons, then it is the min purchase you must make if you have no manuf coupons. If you do have coupons, you can then use them as part of your payment. If the min purchase requirement INCLUDES manuf coupons, then you would need to meet the requirement when all coupons are factored in. Does that make sense? If not, maybe someone else can help.

Don’t you just love fine print language?

  • Amanda

I just got back from the Calwell Idaho store (the one by the stadium). I did two transactions but the cats did not print out on the second. The manager just checked my receipt and printed them out. He said that they were having trouble with the cats printing when you do two transactions in a row (ie. I was not the first this had happened to today). They were very friendly about it and are very coupon friendly in general. I just love shopping at that store. I am moving soon about a half hour away and I am totally coming back just to shop at this store.

  • lu c.

denise i don’t think you misread at all. i looked up an ad from san diego and it does say ‘exclude’ which to me it says $30 AFTER coupons. here in pocatello -i even looked up one in provo- does NOT say that. it just says “when you buy $30 of these participating products in a single transaction using your albertsons preferred card. Coupon will be at checkout”.

  • Megan

Just got back from the Albies at Greenhurst and 12th.

Neither of my qualifying transactions printed the catalinas.

This is where having patience and a good reputation/relationship with your albertsons employees comes in handy.

They worked with me, I was able to show them that I qualified, and they printed me out the catalina’s owed ($30, it didn’t work on EITHER transaction) Love the employees at this store!

Remember to go shopping when your store is not so busy. you’re less frazzled and so are the store employees. And be patient. Especially on the first day of the sale when everything will go wrong.

On another note, just wanted to mention that the Albertsons at 12th and Greenhurst had 227 bottles of Dove hair care in today (all varieties) and will have another 227 bottles in tomorrow. so if you’re having trouble finding it, go there!

I live in TX and in our ad it doesn’t say anything about spend $30 get $15 back. Although I do have something saying spend $30 on procter/gamble items and get $10 back. Is this anything close to being the same promotion??? How do I know which items are procter/gamble? How do I know which are the participating items. Thanks in advance!

    • couponsavingdad

Have you gotten any replies or advice on this??? I also live in TX and we got the same promo going on where I live. Just wondering if we can get any help making the most of this deal. Thanks to any everybody who can help…

  • Denise

It’s 30 before coupons– tonight I went and had 3 separate catalina-earning transactions and 2 didn’t work. I stuck around after to talk to cust. service and after checking my receipts and matching it all up, ended up just scanning a bunch of the viva paper towels I bought and giving me 2 sets of $15 catalinas. Somewhat of a pain for them because they have no control over those machines. I don’t mind insisting I get my catalinas though, that’s why I GO to Albertsons!

  • James

I just went to an Albertson’s in Boise (5 mile and Overland) and the Catalina’s printed without any problems. I also printed out the $2 off Healthy Choice Frozen meal coupon and used it to get a free frozen dinner (they’re selling for $1.99 right now).
