Reader Email: How to Buy Produce Like a KCL?

I am new to couponing (3 weeks) and want to become a KCL this year, but I have a few questions for you. How do you buy fresh produce like a KCL? Is there ever produce coupons? Just watching sales? My family eats fresh fruit and veggies much better than canned, how do I get them CHEAP?

Just like grocery shopping like a Krazy Coupon Lady takes time, planning ahead & a little ‘know how’- the same is true when shopping for produce. Here is what I do for my family.
Shop in Season. This is the most obvious way to save a little dough, and I am sure most of you are doing this. Just cook around what’s available and cheap in the produce section.
When Summer comes around, I get BUSY! Now, a know a lot of you plant gardens. This is definitely ideal, but it’s not what I do. (I tried once, and failed miserably) I just make friends who plant gardens and are over achievers. 
Seriously though, the key is to get your hands on some cheap produce. Whether you grow it yourself, find a great farmers market, shop smart at the grocery store or glean the fields at the end of the crop- get you some produce! Then freeze what you can. I freeze grapes, diced green peppers & onions, sliced peaches, raspberries, strawberries, corn and so forth. For all of the things listed, I clean (and chop) and lay them out on a cookie sheet, freeze them on the cookie sheet and then transfer them to baggies. This helps to offset some of the cost, during the winter months when you can’t buy most of that for less than 1 Arm and 1 Leg.
Pay with Catalinas. Often I try to pay for things like produce with my Catalina Coupons. This definitely helps off set the cost.
Don’t Sweat Paying for Produce. When all is said and done, don’t get too caught up in paying for produce. It’s one of the things that I really don’t mind having to pay full price for. I love having it in my home, I love feeding it to my kids and I am saving loads of money in most other areas of my life, so if I spend $30 just on produce in one shopping trip, it’s okay because I have 100 boxes of cereal that didn’t cost me that much!
