I got totally chewed out the other day at my local Target (Redmond, WA) by a cashier for using a coupon on a travel size item. She let me use it, but continued to lecture me the entire time I was checking out. I asked her if it was Target’s store policy to exclude travel size items even if the actual coupon does not state any exclusions. She tried to get out of it by saying, “Well, we usually don’t allow it.” I kept trying to get her to confirm what the store policy was, but she just continued to give me the same “usually” line. What does this mean? It’s up to the individual checker’s discretion? If they’re in a good mood, they let you? If they recognize you, they let you? I have no idea. I couldn’t find anything in writing in their coupon policy that disallows using coupons on travel size items. I guess it’s a YMMV situation, but I won’t be trying it at my Target again. The lecture was a bit much for some stinkin’ lotion. LOL

Hi Krista. This past weekend I had a similar episode with a cashier at Target. I think they’re really trying to “crack down.” I had 3 $1.00 coupons for Tide and wanted to use them on the travel size, along with a few other toothpastes in the trial size. She would not accept the coupons. What I did was come home and printed off the Target Coupon policy, went in the next day, went right to the Customer Service area, and explained that it said on the coupon (and I showed them) ANY size. Therefore, that includes trial / travel size. The girl at customer service told me I was absolutely right. They will adjust the coupon though, which is fine with me. In other words, if the coupon is for $1.25 and the product is .99 cents, it’s only good for .99 cents. But my point was made and the cashier was told about it as well becuase she happened to be working the register again on Sunday when I went in. I think the stores are figuring things out, that we’re getting “something for nothing,” which is true, to a point. I’m not one to stand by though when it’s clearly their policy to accept these coupons, and if the coupons are legit, there’s no reason that you had to go through that. I hope by sharing my experience it helped you. Have a good day. Nancy

Thanks for the reply, Nancy. I actually had the Target coupon policy printed out and in my binder at the time, but the cashier was such a loud mouthed rude wench, that I was completely red and embarrassed and didn’t want to deal with it that day. In the future, I think I’ll do what you did and go over to customer service. What kinda bugs me is that the stores are not losing money on these “free” items. They are reimbursed the full value plus the 8 cents handling. I don’t like how they make you feel like you’re trying to steal merchandise or something. It’s definitely not a very customer friendly thing to do. Thanks again for the words of support.

I went to my local Target yesterday, they accepted the coupon on Tide for the Trial size, and also the Satin Care Shave Gel, but would not accept it for the ReNu Solution.. she tried to override it, but the system wouldn’t do it.. but everything else worked out okay!

I went to Target last night where they had the 3oz Gillette clinical deodorant for $1.79. I used my coupon from PG4/4 (i think) where its B1G1 Bodywash Free. They looked at it but the cashier was like “hmmm could deal!” I got the Gillette bodywash that was $5.99 I think for FREE!! I LOVE COUPONS!!
