16 Questions and Answers: Extreme Couponing TLC!

Posted in: Extreme Couponing  //  Comments (64)

Here are 16 questions from our facebook friends!  Many of us watched the show together and commented via facebook!  I loved it, so thanks to those of you who were there!  We got some great questions and I thought I would go ahead and answer them here on the site where everyone can read!

When did you film the show?

We filmed at the beginning of September.  Back then the show was going to be called “Coupon Masters” and I wasn’t told who any of the other participants would be.

How much time do you really spend couponing?

I currently only spend about 2 hours per week clipping and shopping, or at least preparing to shop.  The reason I spend so little time is because since I have that stockpile, I don’t have to shop very often.  After taping with TLC, I didn’t go to the store for over 2 weeks!  On the show, my husband says I spend hours a day and that it’s a full-time job.  He misspoke or was misquoted as he was referring to the work I do on this website, not just couponing alone.

I want to know what online coupon sites you use?

You can find hundreds of coupons on our Printable Coupon Database, including those from Coupons.com, RedPlum and SmartSource.

How many copies of the Sunday paper do you get?

If your local paper gets Smartsource, Redplum AND P&G inserts, then I suggest buying 4-6 copies of the Sunday paper each week.  I do not recommend paying over $2 per paper EVER.

I should add I obviously keep missing something around there though, bc I am paying for toothbrushes and toilet paper….how do I get them free?!?!

You need to shop at the drugstores!  Toothbrushes are free every month at each of the national drugstores.  Toilet paper for free is more difficult to come by.

Do you only do couponing in the supermarket? Do you do it in other stores?

I coupon everywhere, supermarket, drugstores to coupon codes online.  Can’t . . . . stop. . . .. couponing. . .

How do you get so many coupons?

For the show I purchased some of my coupons (pasta sauce and noodles) from websites like collectablecoupons.com.  I bought 40 of each coupon at about a nickel a piece.

How do you get such good deals on things like toilet paper and dishwasher detergent? I never seem to be able to get much of a discount on either.

For me, Toilet paper and dishwasher detergent deals are hard to come by, so when I do find a KRAZY deal on these items, I get stocked. I am not afraid to have a 1-2 year of either of these items.  Just wait for the right deal, don’t be afriad to pay a little out of pocket, and ask your store to special order the amount you want!

How often do you dumpster-dive?

Actually not that often, but that is because my local paper not having very great coupons.  I do occasionally reach in the recycle bin when I’m hoping to find extras!  Proud of it!

How do u oranginze your coupons in the big folder?

Read how to start your binder and download my 36 categories here.

Is there any other way to watch the show?

Not that I can see as of yet.  I’ll keep an eye on Hulu and let you know if it pops up.  The show is being re-aired tonight at 1 AM EST and again on Jan 4th at 8 PM EST and 1 AM EST.

Do you always use all your coupons before they expire????

Nope, nope, nope!  I throw away a lot more coupons than I use!  It’s just the nature of the gig.  I’m only using coupons when I find a product on sale, so that means I don’t use most of them.  What matters most is the ones I use, I really make count!  The coupons that expire before I can use get donated to KCL’s Overseas Coupon Program.

You need to work for a foodbank! You could help a lot of people with your knowledge.

If only I didn’t have kids and a coupon blog!  Lol.  When I donated last time at the food bank, I asked if I could teach a class and they said, “yes”, so hopefully that’ll go well.

So tell me how they are getting away with using more then one coupon per trans when coupons say one per purchase or limit four like items I don’t understand I love they save that much but need inside info on how they can do it

Coupons say “one per purchase”, which is different than transaction.  You can use one coupon per item; buy 50 items, use 50 coupons, etc.  Read more here.

What stores are you shopping at?

On the show, I shopped at Safeway (also goes by Vons, Randalls, Dominick’s, Genuardi’s, Tom Thumb and Carss in different parts of the country).

Is this gonna be on every week?

Nope, it was just a one time show/pilot.

Love your hair

Well, thank you.  I have to give props to my hairdresser.  You may know her.  KCL co-founder, Heather was my college roommate and was a cosmetologist before her coupon conversion.  She does her best to make my hair look good.

If you want to hear more about the show and about how to coupon, you can listen to this radio interview I did last week to promote the show.
