Extreme Couponing Tip: Dollar Stores and Coupons

Which “Dollar” stores accept coupons?
Dollar Tree does not accept coupons.  However, Dollar General and Family Dollar accept coupons.

I have a coupon from 6/26 insert for Scott tissue and at the top is says “redeemable at Dollar General”, it also says “manufacturers coupon” at the top. Can I use this at another store or will they see the Dollar General text and say its only for them?

I purchased said deal earlier this week @ DG. Sales person had to manually enter $5.00 Q,did’nt even need $3.00 Q, as item rang up for $1.48.thats less than *half of half* I was happy…what a deal!!!

  9. sypage says:

I think the main reason Dollar Tree does not accept coupons is that everything is actually $1.00 there. Also, they don’t have a lot of name-brand stuff, so even if they did, there probably wouldn’t be too many couponing opportunities. My experience is that Family Dollar’s prices are not that great. I can often beat them at the big chain stores. Dollar General is a little better, but not a lot…

I live in northern california (sacramento area) and i have yet to see a dollar general or family dollar store :( i wish dollar tree took coupons dang it! occasionally i still find good deals there but it seems like im better off using my coupons at other stores than going to dollar tree.

  11. Karabearblu says:

Dollar Tree here in Wabash, Indiana accepts manufacturer coupons. This is a fairly new policy though!

  12. Learning to Q says:

Like many of you, I had many issues with the Lysol soap dispensers. I live in De Pere, WI where we happen to have a Dollar General. I went in yesterday to buy 3 of these in 3 separate transactions after I read all the useful comments on how to do it. The cashier looked at the coupons (didn’t even scan them) and called her manager over. He barely glanced at the DG coupon and told me I can only use one or the other. Now, I haven’t been couponing for a long time, but enough to know that I had to check the coupon policy before going. Luckily I had it printed out. I showed the manager where it states that it’s possible and even told him how it needed to be done. He wanted nothing to do with it or me. He said I can either take the $5 off or none at all. I really wanted them so I just took it. I went home and sent a lenghty e-mail to corporate about it, (which I’m waiting to hear an answer) and went back to the store and returned them because I knew that wasn’t a great deal. The cashier tried to lie to me to tell my coupons were lost and down in a hole, but amazingly when I advised that I had an e-mail sent to corporate, my coupons magically showed up in her drawer and she handed them back to me. I was also asked to not come back for a while unless I was willing to abide by policy. Today, I went to another DG in Green Bay and the cashier called the manager over who looked at the coupons and said “Yes, just make sure they are all separate transactions.” Finally I found my savior. The clerk even asked where he could score some great deals so I wrote them down for him. I was really impressed with that store that I made sure to write down the names of the associates and when I hear from corporate, I’m going to make sure they were noticed for knowing and following policies unlike other stores.

Same thing happened to me…. exactly your story, one store wouldn’t listen to my reasoning and a 2nd store… was totally nice and respectful just scanned both coupons and let me be on my way, I nicely told her she made my day…. all for 2 lysol soap dispensers, haha

  15. Katpwood says:

Also, we even had the store coupon policy and it states that they will take both and the managers still said no.

  16. Katpwood says:

The Dollar Generals in Port Arthur, Nederland, and Beaumont Texas will not except Manufacture and Dollar General coupons together, the manager even called the district manager.

  17. Tricia says:

I don’t think ill shop at dollar general anymore…i went to buy the koolaid deal, pringles deal, and suave lotion once and the lady not only fought my MF coupons but got the manager and until he scanned them would accept them then rolled her eyes at me…bad experience…

  18. Amy says:

All of you that had issues with the DG coupon should email them. Secondly, dollar stores suck! Unless you have store and mfc coupons to stack–which, good luck finding a cashier that knows the policies–then you will pay far more than you pay at Wal-Mart.

  19. Genuwin11 says:

I just noticed today at my Dollar Tree in Indiana there was a large banner across the store that said “we now accept Manufacturer’s coupons”.

  20. Mickbeck says:

Just an F.Y.I Family Dollar will not accept coupons that make an item free or coupons that are good for a free item. I went there and tried to use the Free Carefree coupon and they told me I couldnt because it was against their policy. Quote….. We dont just give merchandise away! Even tho they will get fully reimbursed from the manufacturer they still said no. I did E-mail corporate 3 weeks ago and still no response.

  21. Karen says:

DG cashier at a store near me was rude to me. After I placed all my items up & she started ringing them up, she saw me holding coupons. She said they have to have the coupon with the actual item & she scrutanized every one. The majority were cut out off the coupon inserts. I had 2 internet coupons for .50/2 items.
My FD takes coupons but sometimes they have a problem with the register if the coupon is over $1. My Walgreens loves their “Coupon Ladies”!

  22. PGTallChic23 says:

This “Extreme Couponing” crap on TV has all us REAL coupon clippers so screwed up. Everyone is up in arms to make sure people don’t get stuff for free. Coupon policies are changing left and right. CRAZY!

  23. obxnative says:

I went to my local DG and tried to buy the Lysol no touch using both their coupon and the manuf. coupon and was denied twice. I went out to my car got their corporate policy and even after I showed them they still wouldn’t let me. I emailed the corporate office and haven’t heard anything yet. They’ve lost me as a customer.

  24. Awillardson says:

what about the .99 cent store? do they take coupons?

  25. Jennifer says:

My Dollar General made a big deal because I waited until the end to hand them my coupons. They told me I had to hand the coupons to them as I handed them the item I wanted. I thought this was totally ridiculous and I didn’t always have to do that.

  26. Cassandrab09 says:

The dollar tree does accept coupons, at least ours does in IN.

  27. Yellowjacketgal says:

My local Dollar General will not allow you to stack a Dollar General coupon and a manufacture’s coupon. You can only use one coupon per item.

  28. Bebepackard says:

I love using my coupons at DG – sometimes I find better deals than Wal-Mart, etc. If a coupon doesnt state what size I can usually find the single sizes (like soap) at DG. Plus their new $1 section (at my DG) is a really good way to use coupons. I got 4 bottles (2 spray and 2 bottles) of Spic N Span for $2 because they were $1 ea. and I had 2 BYGO coupons.

  29. Tracey986 says:

Dollar General is the worst store to use coupons at! We were so messed up, they didn’t use all of our coupons and overcharged us and then acted like we were stupid and said they “hate extreme couponers” and we only used 4 coupons each!. We called it in to the corporate office, but I’m sure it was to no avail because I have yet to hear back from them.

  30. KT says:

Our Dollar Tree in Greenfield Indiana is a test store that takes coupons! They take manf. and internet coupons but they wont take an internet one making the product free…i guess too many frauds. I get alot of my freebies there!!!!!!!

  31. Kallykae says:

Last time I was in Ft Wayne Indiana the Dollar Tree store was just accepting coupons, maybe only in special areas. They had a sign in the window and I was able to use the Spic and Span coupon on their wipes

  33. Stfausna says:

the dollar tree in the Kendallville,IN, does accept manufacture coupons. The cashier said that they have been for the last year.

  34. Escapetochg says:

There are Dollar Trees in the Chicagoland area that are “test” stores for acceptance of manf coupons. In the windows all over town there are signs that state, we accept manf. coupons.

  38. Prue says:

The Dollar General has a Charmin Basic pack (I think 40 ct) that has COUPONS in the bottom of the package. They are long term MC’s for a ton of stuff. Awesome!

  39. Tanthony4 says:

Went to 2 DG stores and had drama at both. Managers had to be called in both cases to void the original transactions. Was buying 2 Lysol refills and 2 starter kits. Had to buy 1 item (stacking the 2 coupons) per transaction. Both managers were rude and hostile: ” I don’t have time for this.” Ugh, if it weren’t for the extremely good price I was getting…..

    • Lyds85 says:

if they dont have time they should just let you have it then jeez. i had a manager tell me he didnt have time at Walgreens a couple months ago. i was so mad i havent been back to walgreens since!!

The cashier at a Family Dollar here (St. Louis) tried to tell me that I couldn’t use both coupons for my Lysol soap dispenser but I whipped out that coupon policy, stood firm, and spoke with authority and she shut up and took the coupons and I got my $2 soap dispenser.

Family dollars out by me (Raceland, Louisiana) had the Lysol no touch priced at $10.00 but rang up on sale for $5.00 plus I used my $3.00 off manufactor coupon. So I paid $2.00 for it!!!

  45. Catherinew3 says:

On the DG website it states they will acept both their coupon with a manufacture coupon. When I got the the store to use both the manager stated she could not accept both. I have an e-mail out to the man office for claification. If the website says one thing and the DG store says another. Who is right?

  46. Darciefree says:

Our Dollar General will accept internet coupons, as long as it says “Manufacturer Coupon” on it.

  47. A. S. says:

I coupon at my Dollar General all the time. It shocks the ladies now if I dont use at least one. LOL. I get super-cheap name brand razor packs (25 cents to 2.00 max, and will be doing it again today), and I have literally gotten free-after-coupon stuff from their clearance isle. With the .75 cent off TicTac coupon, I actually made .15 a pack there. And anytime a manufacturer changes packaging.. be on the lookout!
The only thing that made me seriously livid was that, on my last trip, I had 4 coupons for their Rexall pain killer and tummy products that I got from their main website. The cash register refused to honor 3 of them. And they overcharged me for tinfoil. Made me so mad, I wrote a nice letter to corporate. No word back yet. :/
Couponing at Family Dollar is significantly harder to do, but I have gotten some laundry soap deals there before.

Well i’m glad u guys cleared that up for me. I always kind of thought that Dollar Tree would not accept coupons but never really was sure. I guess it is a good thing bc I would definitely be there everyday. My store is like 2 min. away..lol

    • Anonymous says:

Make sure to email/ call/ write your Dollar Tree and let them know how much you appreciate it. That way they are more likely to keep doing it and implement it storewide!

  59. Mattie says:

My Dollar Tree Accepts Coupons! :) It’s wonderful!

  60. Nicole says:

When stacking coupons at DG it just depends on the manager because only one coupon will be scanned and the other will have to be manually be entered by the manager, which can take some time depending on how many products you are stacking.

  61. Doris says:

So can we stack peelies along with Manufacturer’s Qs?

  62. Rebecca Miller says:

The difference is that at Dollar Tree, everything is literally already one dollar. They would never make any money at all if they took coupons. Also, often their sizes of items would be different than the item on the coupon anyway. But the other stores are dollar stores in name only. You can’t really get much there for one dollar, so with the higher prices, they can afford to accept coupons.

  63. Hey_jupiter says:

Yesterday, I went to DG and bought the Lysol No touch starter kit which was on sale for $10. They have a $5 off store coupon on their website and I had my $3 off mfg. coupon so I ended up getting it for $2. The ladies behind the counter were in shock. I think we may have 2 more up and coming extreme couponers!!

  64. Tnr1129 says:

My DG tried to say that they couldn’t accept the MFG and Store coupon for the lysol because it was showing on the screen that only $3 was taken off, but after they hit TOTAL, it DID work…it took a manager to figure that out

  66. Michelle says:

Only thing with Dollar General and Family Dollar, you have to make sure your really GETTING a deal. They raise some of their prices…I went to get the Gillete Fusion Razor with their $1 coupon and my $4 coupon, to later realize it was the crappy regular one for the price of the battery operated one.

    • lucsmom says:

I dont even bother with Family Dollar anymore because I can find better deals elsewhere. I have never found 1 good price there.

  67. Anks_mama says:

We only have the Dollar Tree in my area. Which sucks becuase I would love to use coupons at these stores. Oh Well. They don’t need my business I guess.

    • Anonymous says:

You can get some good deals at Dollar Tree, even without coupons. Some of my favorites there are minced garlic, Sunday newspapers ($1, which is half the price of the retail in my area), gift bags, silicone spatulas, sieves, wine goblets & champagne glasses, and ginger snaps :)

      • Coupongirl02 says:

That is so funny! I was just saying to my hubby that I need to go there to get our minced garlic! That’s the only place I get it, and I am planning to get my Sunday papers there. Our only car is broken down now, so I’ve not been able to do that yet before they sell out. But that’s a great deal! And I also get sieves there too for a gardening project I do. =) Great minds think alike! ;)

I went to our local Dollar General Store for the Lysol No Touch Soap and they weren’t going to let me use the DG coupon with the MFC until I showed them the policy and then they accepted! She did say however they turned alot of people away the day before due to lack of knowledge…..

  69. Son Casey says:

I walked in Dollar General with four coupons and the cashier asked “are you one of those extreme couponers?” I replied “If I was, would my total be more than $70?” NO! Let’s just say he took his good ole’ time.

  70. Howls_dolphin says:

Thanks for the tips. I was wondering which dollar stores took manufacturer’s coupons. Big Lots by the way does not accept coupons. I asked at my local one when I noticed the had some Bob’s Red Mill items in. Being gluten free, I need to save money where I can because the gluten free items are more expensive, rarely on sale and have a lot less coupons available.

    • jazzievegas says:

The 99 cents store in Las Vegas had gluten free pasta, seemed to be an expensive brand, too. If you have a 99 cent nearby, check it out, they have fresh produce as well.

    • jazzievegas says:

    • Lauren Thoman says:

Another great place for gluten-free items is The Christmas Tree Shop (not sure if you have one in your area). We get a lot of our stuff there for cheap. They typically have a large Bob’s Red Mill selection (and coupons do not exist for Bob’s Red Mill, so any time I can find it cheap, I stock up!)

Also, I have written directly to the manufacturers of gluten-free products and have had great luck getting them to send me coupons directly. I just explain that I use coupons for the majority of my shopping, but my husband is gluten-free and it is hard to shop for him, since his items are expensive, rarely on sale, and pretty much never have coupons. Most places were very friendly and sent out coupons right away! The best ones I got were from Namaste and Glutino.

I also have a dairy-free daughter, and I wrote to those manufacturers as well. Scored some great Earth Balance, Whole Soy & Co. and Turtle Mountain (So Delicious) coupons that way!

      • Michelle says:

I sooo miss the Christmas Tree Shop! Loved them up north, moved down south and we don’t have any!

  71. jamie says:

yes the dollar general lets you use there coupon and manufacturers coupon on the same item

Did you have a copy of their coupon policy with you? In there, it specifically states, “Maximum of two coupons per item. One coupon must be a Manufacturer’s Coupon and the second coupon must be a Dollar General Coupon as long as neither coupon states that it is not valid with other coupons”.
        http://www.dollargeneral.com/OurStores/Pages/CouponPolicy.aspx
Always, always make sure to have every stores’ coupon policy whenever you shop!

I went in to my local Dollar General to buy the No touch Lysol system with my coupons. They had it mark down to $8 from $10.When the cashier rang it up it showed for $10. Irealized this after she rang up my coupons. When I showed her that it was marked down to $8 she went and got the Store Manager who took it off and re scanned it. She re scanned my coupons and told me she couldnt take both of them. I told her that their coupon policy said they did and had it in my purse to show her. She said the reason she couldnt take them was because I would be getting the item free and they couldnt do that. I left the store with no purchase and callled Corporate when I got back home and have not heard anything since.

    • Debblom says:

depends on where you are I reckon, mine would not accept both.

  72. Couponlady says:

It would be great if the “dollar” stores would accept coupons, but their logic is that their prices are already so low, accepting coupons would make it impossible for them to make a profit.

I’m hoping the day come when they see the benefit of inviting customers to use coupons and broaden their customer base.

    • Michelle says:

Most of the times their prices arent already low, just rounded up or rounded down my opinion

    • Alan_eggleston says:

They get their money back from the manufacturer. If that is too difficult for them to accomplish, they need to get out of the business. As for other comments, only a few store brands items are lower price than sale prices at Wally World. Dollar General has a good clone of Girl Scout Thin Mints and Peanut Butter cookies, yummy!

  73. Teresa Robinson says:

I have found that on most items in our Family Dollar, I get a better deal at Walmart :/ The only time I get good deals there is when they have a good sale going on. Their normal prices just aren’t all that low (at least on the items I normally buy).

  74. cahugh4 says:

Family Dollar and General Dollar stores also allow stacking of a store coupon and a maunfacturer’s coupon. You will probably have to carry the policy with you, because most of their associates are not properly trained on the policy.

Also a big note for Family Dollar. Their cash registers are not “coupon friendly”. When you use coupons at Family Dollar you have to scan the item THEN the Coupon! You cannot scan all the items at first and then the coupons, because the register will be unable to match the coupon to the item and the cashier will have to manually search through the items and manually enter the coupon (which takes FOREVER!) Also their registers are easily prone to crashing (especially when you are stacking).

    • Mary Beaver says:

I went to Family Dollar a couple weeks ago, the lady that checked me out didn’t know that you had to scan the item then the coupon, needless to say, she had to void the whole transaction and start all over, i think i spent a half hour at check out!!

    • Rhonda says:

Our Family Dollar register won’t accept more than two like coupons in a transaction, either. So basically, if you have to have more than one transaction if you’re going to use several of the same coupon. This isn’t in their coupon policy, so I found out the hard way…a bit annoying.

  75. Tiff says:

my family dollar always has glade an renuzit items in their clearance sections. every now n then they’ll have some lysol wipes on clearance too. i got the ones in the plastic sleeves (like baby wipes) for $0.25 after coupons a while back :) i haven’t couponed at dollar general kuz mine normally only has drinks that i have MQ for

  76. Do they allow stacking of a DG coupon and a Manufacturer coupon?

  77. Do they allow stacking of a DG coupon and a Manufacturer coupon?

    • Teresa Robinson says:

I know you can at Family Dollar, not sure about DG

      • Alan_eggleston says:

Yes, I used a $5 DG coupon for the Lysol auto dispenser hand soap, and a $3 manufacturer coupon and made the dispenser only $2. Got 2 of them on Wednesday this week.

    • Dalilmac89 says:

Yes they do, however my local store (Small Town, USA) would not accept the DG and manufacturer coupon for the Lysol No Touch soap dispenser. I was told by the manager that their DG coupon is still considered a manufacturer coupon. I had to go to a different store, and several separate transactions later I walked out with my products.

      • jduff says:

You should point out to him that the dollar general coupon was from dollar general and stated on there dollar general. My manager here said it was just fine, I was able to use them no problem. Also if your manager would have scanned it he would have seen it go through just fine…unless they have a completely different system?.

Same frustration with me….2 stores later and a cashier who was finally nice

      • Rogers Debra400 says:

all he had to do was sacn the 5 dollar one first then the 3 dollar one and it works just fine.. i line in a small town with only 2 DG and i did it at both…

      • Genuwin11 says:

Mine too, they had me do all separate transactions, but it was worth it for a savings of $8 each! We use the lysol no touch soap dispensers and love them!

      • Tamishia says:

I had no problem purchasing the 4 I bought. We did have to ring them individually however.

I had to print DG coupon policy and take it back to the store, for them to take their own DG coupon and the manufacturer together…I end up paying $2.00.
Their policy states that you can use both

    • Gina says:

Yes you can stack a DG and a manufacturer. I did this yesterday to get the lysol hands free soap dispenser for $2.

      • Sprs1515 says:

They wouldn’t allow me to do that today. I don’t get it. So different stores will allow you and others wont. That doesn’t make since to me. Ugggg. I was really looking forward to getting it for 2.00 today. I am so going to write a letter.

        • Tammy says:

They wouldn’t allow me to do it either. I posted on the dollar general facebook page and got a “canned” response from them. Something to do with them being very careful because of coupon fraud. It was all crap!

          • shari says:

They wouldn’t allow me either and I told them their policy allowed it and they need to look it up. They said the manager said no and since he was not there, I did not push the issue with the cashier- she was just doing her job. I told her I will return with the coupon policy next trip out.

          • Tricia says:

yes, but she acted like she couldnt read…just horrible experience and never got my savings…just walked out i got sick of dealing with them…

            • Tricia says:

she told me no still and that it was “stealing” to try and get away with doubling coupons…refused to follow the policy…

The manager at the DG I went to said no as well, after telling me I couldn’t use them and then reading the coupon policy. She said that I couldn’t use both because the part on the coupon that states “limit one coupon per purchase” meant it was not valid with other coupons. NEWSFLASH: all/most manufacturer’s coupons state this but that’s not what it means. I’m going to try to contact the main manager and see what I can come up with and maybe try a different store. and if that doesn’t work does anyone know of a number I can call a little higher up?

    • Michelle says:

yes they have for me here in Huntsville, Tx. Depends on store.

    • Bmleger says:

      Yes They do.

    • Sprs1515 says:

No i learned that today. I wanted to hurt someone. I was so upset that i wasn’t allowed to do that.

    • Debblom says:

My DG will not even if there is a peelie they will not let you use the peelie plus a manufacturer coupon.

      • Anonymous says:

Was the peelie a store coupon? You can only use one manufacturer coupon per item (at *any* store). So unless one was a store coupon, you cannot stack them.

yes, their store policy says so and it is posted at the checkout, but the cashiers most of the time do not know that…. I have to be polite and read it to them, b/c its usually the first time they hear about it…. and don’t take it well coming from a customer…. but its the policy :)

    • guest says:

yes DG allows stacking on Coupons! Which is great because right now on DG website they have a $3/off coupon for Lysol NoTouch Soap Kit and with the $2/off MC it makes it only $2 :) was so happy about that deal!

There are some store peelies out there– I’ve seen some at stores like Target, but they are usually for the store brands. The peelie will either say “Store Coupon” or “Manufacturer Coupon” across the top. You can use one store coupon + one manufacturer coupon on one item, but you can only use one manufacturer coupon per item.

Dollar Tree will allow you to exchange any unopened item with a receipt however. I have done this several times when I’ve purchased too many things for a party. I just get something else I can use.

Yeah, I think it’s good to double check at your local store. I bought something at my Dollar Tree once, and I was unsure about the item. I asked if I could return it later if it didn’t work the way it should, they told me, ‘sure!’ Just keep your packaging and receipt. So again, this ANOTHER example of a local store NOT complying with their coorprate policy. But for a change, THIS time, it’s in THE CUSTOMER’S interest! =)
