Extreme Couponing Tip: Sunday Newspapers

Extreme Couponing Tip: Sunday Newspapers

One of the first things we recommend once you have committed yourself to a Krazy Coupon lifestyle is to get a Sunday newspaper subscription!

Inside each Sunday paper are “Coupon Inserts” called SmartSource (SS), RedPlum (RP) or Procter & Gamble (PG).  As a Krazy Coupon Lady, you will want to get between 4 and 6 Sunday Papers. Sunday newspapers are still the top source for coupons used.

The first step to finding a subscription is to call your local paper’s circulation department.  You’ll need to ask them these important questions:

  1. What coupon inserts does your paper carry?  (out of 3:  SmartSource, RedPlum and Procter & Gamble)
  2. Do you offer a Sunday-Only or Weekend Only subscription?
  3. Do you offer any discount if I order multiple copies of your Sunday paper?

As a general rule, we say that if you can get a Sunday only or weekend-only subscription for under $2 per week per paper or less, it’s a pretty good deal*.  We suggest subscribing to 4-6 copies of the Sunday paper.  This way, you’ll have 4-6 copies of each coupon and you’ll be able to stockpile items when they are Free or cheap!  For those whose papers are in the realm of $3 each or more AND for those whose paper’s do not carry some of the inserts (OR, since coupons distributed vary by region, if you live in a rural area and the insert coupons quantity and quality are substandard) you can purchase whole inserts online from services like Collectable CouponsThe Coupon Clippers or eBay.

*Other ways to get papers for cheaper: if you have a Dollar Tree store nearby, ask if they carry Sunday papers. Most locations do and the price is just $1.00. Also look into a Sunday Advance edition option for a possible discount.

Want newspaper coupon inserts but don’t want to pay?  You’ve got some options which include asking, friends, neighbors or co-workers to save their coupons for you.  Talk to local business owners or convenience stores and ask if you can have their unsold papers at the end of the week.  Also try checking out neighborhood and city Recycling Centers.

Just make sure if you buy your paper from the dollar tree that you check it
Before you leave. I got one today with no inserts. Luckily they switched papers for me. They said they have someone stealing the coupons out. Also, I bought 3 papers because I wanted the P&G insert and not one of them had it!

My adult daughter got lucky by asking one day at a local gas station what they did with their Sunday papers that didn’t sell. This must be the only place in town where the carrier doesn’t pick them up! Now every Monday or Tuesday she gets stacks of papers with coupon inserts and we split them up (we usually get 20 each) and we have tons of coupons! We also donate the leftover non slick papers to the local animal shelter. It’s a win/win for everyone! :-)

I started couponing after someone in my small town had a class last winter. I tried it for a week or two, and hated buying the paper. I tried getting discounts for multipils or paying early, and no go. I doped it. I was also one of the “I don’t have time” because of work, class and kids. Then it was the end of June and my six year old was actually CRYING because she was hungry. I did get a paper the Sunday before my food stamps came in. I did well, and got two papers the next week. There were no food coupons that week, and I was very disappointed. Then I seen the KKlady video on here where the anchor lady dove through the recycle bin. Now I’m doing great. I bought a paper one more time, and never again. I get so many papers that I need help to clip them. I’ve been diving in the recycle trailer for a month now, and it has turned my life around. I actually have well over a weeks worth of food left, and I get my stamps in two days. Time commitment isn’t bad. I work from home from a national tela-service company, so I clip between calls, and sometimes during calls when I know the scrip well enough. Thank You All You Krazy Couponers!!!! (Encase your wondering why this person had internet, but no food, it’s because I need it for work, I know I would have asked that question.)

    • The recycling centers sure are great. I was getting frustrated in the beginning due to cost of paper even with dollar tree around but after finally going to the public recycling bins once and bringing home about 50 inserts from an hours work, i havnt bought a paper since other than the 1 the comes to the house automatically. I go 2-3 times a week now for an hour or so after work and am well stocked for any decent deals that come along… Just wish those P&G coupons werent limited to 4 per transaction :( but I guess it makes it more fair to others that dont end up with 100+ of each weeks inserts.

We actually subscribe to a small, local, once-a-week paper, for $20/year, and it comes with the big Sunday Cincinnati paper included!

I used to buy the sunday paper from the newstands but noticed the coupon inserts were gone. So i started ordering the sunday paper and now someone started stealing it :( (including today). I keep paying for newspapers but there are too many thiefs out there. What can i do when someone keeps stealing the paper?

I know that there was a section on this sight particularly about that, but I’m not sure where that was. I do know I’ve seen that before. I’m sorry to hear that.

Ive looked before to see about subscriptions to the Austin and Dallas papers. One doesn’t deliver here, at least to the street addresses, and the other one is a dollar more for delivery. And my local paper only has the SS.

I had to drive around this morning looking for the Austin paper as someone had already gone to all 8 7-11′s and bought all the Austin papers. Thankfully I found an out of the way gas station that sells the Austin paper. NOT sharing that Location with anyone!

I used to buy the Sunday paper for coupons and it was $2 a paper. Then I found out the early Sunday edition also had inserts and was Only $1. I then found out that our local small town paper carried inserts…and every single insert. And their cost is only 50 cents a paper. I have not missed an insert yet and am loving it.

I never thought to go to the Dollar Tree to get newspapers before! My subscription is up for renewal within the next couple of weeks, so if they do carry it, I’ll be going there for my newspapers from now on instead of getting 4 Sunday only subscriptions. Four bucks a week is much better than eight!

I live in Chicago and all of the Dollar Trees in my area are now limiting the newspaper purchase to 3…so now my husband has to go with me every Saturday !

You also want to ask if there is a discount for paying one year upfront. I used to pay $4.00 for 4 weeks and when I called to find out if I can get discount for ordering more copies, the lady told me if I pay one year upfront…it will only cost me $30.00 a year (instead of $52.00)…what a surprise…since there are only my hubby and myself in the house…I ordered 2 copies
