Walgreens Fillers and How to Use Them:

The Walgreens cash register system will not allow the cashier to accept more manufacturer coupons than total items purchased in a single transaction. For example, if you are purchasing five items, using five manufacturer coupons and a Register Reward, the cash register will make an angry beep and reject the sixth coupon.  (A Register Reward is recognized by the computer system as a manufacturer coupon.) The solution: you’ll need to purchase what we call a “filler” item.  This refers to any inexpensive product in the store that you add to your purchase so the register will accept that extra sixth coupon. This might be a small candy caramel ($0.39) or pencil ($0.05) near the register, or my personal favorite, an extra copy of the Sunday paper.  It doesn’t matter what the product is or even what it costs.  You just need to ensure that you have at least as many items as manufacturer coupons.  Here’s the equation: total number of Register Rewards+ total number of manufacturer coupons cannot exceed total number of products purchased.

The other time that will need to add a “filler” item to your transaction is when the amount of the Register Reward you’re using to pay exceeds the total cost of your item(s). Even if you have more items in your transaction than coupons, if your subtotal is less than the amount of the Register Reward, the register will again make an angry beep. This is because Register Rewards cannot be used to pay sales tax or put your subtotal below $0.00.

And remember, Walgreens’ in-ad coupons and Instant Value coupons do NOT count towards your coupon to item ratio.

  1. With an in-ad Q that says limit 3, do I need a Q per item?

  2. Felicia says:

When using an ad coupon, can another coupon be used on the SAME item? For example, could the giant green veggies in ad coupon be combined with the GM giant green veggie coupon from the paper?

  3. Fyi, double check that the in-ad coupons are scanning for all your items. I used the candy as a filler today, and also the revlon tweezers, and the walgreens coupons only took off once….not on each item (ie, had two bags of candy, and discounted only one). I had double checked with the cashier to make sure I didnt need several coupons, and two cashiers told me I it would take off both….well, 6 transactions later and at home, I looked over my receipts and realized it only took off one item. So bummer….

  4. Paula Foster says:

My Walgreens would not let me use the candy bar last week as a filler, because “it was a “coupon square” in the ad. They will only let me use an onsale item. Not one in a coupon box. any suggestions? or is this how it works. I already had 3 things and 3 coupons, and wanted to use my register reward. ( so a 4th coupon) I ended up just buyng a box of tissue.

My fav filler is my local weekly newspaper, it always has the previous weeks’ smartsource insert in it!! It’s $0.75 and I get MORE COUPS!!!! Happy Dance…

  6. My favorite filler item – kabang’s , they are always up by the register and are vitamin candies that are full of complex B – they always have them on sale for 2 $1. My kids love them and have no idea they aren’t candy.

  7. margaret says:

    that may be ok
but to be on a safe side and avoid akwardness at the cash register I would grab 1,2 fillers just in case …if machine is in a bad mood that day /and cashier/
    been there ,done that

i am so over this coupon craziness in walgreens
evrytime i try to buy something i hear that dreaded beep, beep end im ending up buying stupid filler items which i do not need at all
but this week is great in walgreens a lot of small ,cute items to stock up /filler items/

  9. j says:

Does this apply to Walgreen’s coupons as well? If I purchase 6 items and 3 q’s are walgreens and 3 are manufacturer, do I still need a filler item? I assumed you had to have 1 more item than you do your total coupons.

No, Walgreens in ad coupons and Instant Value coupons do NOT count towards your coupon to item ratio. Hope that helps!

  10. chantel marie says:

I have been having trouble at my local Walgreens stores with store coupons ringing up as manufacture – even after referring to the coupon policy, the managers have said I just need to pick up more items to match the total number of coupons. Anyone else having this problem or have any suggestions?

    • margaret says:

yes me too, sometimes walgreens coupons adds up as coupons and You need more filler items to cover it…..
i never know how this all is going to work out unless i have good fillers…i often buy Arizona tea 2 for 0.99 cents as a filler
that filler thing drives me KRAZY
this is really helpful that filler article …
i like walgreens becouse there is no restriction on amount of transactions but it comes with a price too…lol

Walgreens in ad coupons and Instant Value Coupons do NOT count towards your coupon to item ratio :)

        • chantel marie says:

Is there anything that I can do to stop having to use fillers for my walgreens coupons that should not count toward my ratio?

          • Anonymous says:

If you make sure to give all your in ad coupons and Instant Value coupons last, that should solve the beeping problem :)

Don’t forget that many Walgreens stores still have Halloween candy on clearance on their shelves. Prices and availability vary depending on the store (some Wags have them all for a flat rate of 10 or 25 cents each while others are at 75% off) but they are usually very cheap. I used some Russell Stover chocolate pumpkins for 10-12 cents each as fillers. Its a nice treat for the kids and some are really good deals like the vampire hot chocolate tins for 10 cents each. They will probably be gone by the end of the week so get them soon and use them as filler items for matchup deals.

  13. Thank you for posting this. I do this ALL the time when I coupon Walgreen’s. Usually I will pick up a few of these as fillers when I use my RR, or I use my RR to purchase these filler items and get them free. :)

      You’re welcome!

Like others above posted, thank you for posting this list! My store used to sell these little gums for 5 cents each (best filler item EVER), but they stopped selling it. (sad day) So I’ve been spending every week pouring through the ad to see what I can get for ~.25-.70 cents. This saves me the hunt! :)

Thank you sooo much for doing this! We are always in need of fillers and are a bit tired of caramels. Many of these items are cheaper and/or more useful than the caramels, so I LOVE this addition! Thank you!

  15. I saw in SS ( october i think) coupon for hunt’s canned tomatoes 1$/3, wonder if this will work with 1$/3 sale in walgreens for tomatoe sauce.
