Shortly after graduating college and having my first baby, I found myself in a rather desperate monetary situation. Before I discovered the extreme couponing way of life, I was forced to get very creative with the ways in which I spent (and did not spend) my hard-earned cash.

While shopping at my local supermarket, I came across an organic section with a large sign that said “Food/Health and Beauty products.” Interested, I began browsing. I came across a bottle of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and began reading the back of the bottle for its multi-purpose uses. Since I had no Internet access at the time, I decided to put a $2.39 gallon of apple cider vinegar to the test–supplementing the areas of my budget where health and beauty items would typically fall that I could no longer spend money on.

While I may have begun using these strategies out of desperation, the benefits of apple cider vinegar will never be replaced by an expensive name-brand product for these uses by me ever again!

Beauty Benefits

  • Face: Apple cider vinegar regulates the pH of your skin. Combine 1 cup apple cider vinegar with 1 cup cold water in a plastic bottle (I use recycled baby food jars) and apply with a cotton ball morning and night in lieu of a toner, astringent, or age spot remover.
  • Feet and Hands: Rubbing apple cider vinegar onto swollen hands or feet reduces swelling. A wonderful thing to have during pregnancy!
  • After-Sun Exposure: Diluting 1-2 cups of apple cider vinegar in a warm bath after excessive sun exposure – that may have yielded a sun burn – relieves symptoms and lessens the duration of a burn.
  • Hair: Use apple cider vinegar as a shampoo/conditioner replacement. Combine 4-5 Tbsp. baking soda with 1 part apple
cider vinegar and 1 part water for a clarifying and chemical-free shampoo. Rinse and then apply 1 cup apple cider vinegar as a conditioning rinse. If you have a difficult time with the smell in the shower, add essential oils to your mixes. Some of my favorites are citrus and lavender.

Health Benefits

  • Weight Loss: Have an extra 10-15 stubborn pounds you need to shed? Try adding a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to every 8 oz. glass of water you drink throughout the day. If you maintain the daily intake of 64oz. of water, you will start to see the pounds shed fast!
  • Detoxification: If you are looking for a healthy detox, look no further than apple cider vinegar. Combine 1 ½ cups apple cider vinegar with one gallon of water and drink throughout the course of a day for an overall body and kidney detoxification. You can repeat this process for up to three days, but one to two days is generally sufficient.

Coooool! I’ve been cleaning my house with apple cider vinegar for years (it smells slightly better than regular, distilled), but I had no idea there were so many extra perks! Score!

  2. I also mix 1/4 cup of ACV with 8 oz. of Apple Juice & 8 oz. of Grape Juice every day. It tastes delicious & is very healthy. :)

It also takes the old paint off your walls. Just put it straight on and let it set a min. Scrapes right off. Wall papers too.

It will help lessen the pain of a bee or wasp sting as well, just straight vinegar on a cotton ball applied to the sting. However plain ammonia works better but if u dont have ammonia, vinegar is a suitable replacement. It wont take the pain away as quickly as ammonia but it will lessen it quite a bit faster than just leaving it.

  5. I use ACV on hives and it helps to get rid of them rub on and bathe in it

ACV is wonderful for you, altho as others have pointed out, organic is much better than Heinz and other processed brands.  Years ago I read that it helps with sleep, so I started drinking a glass of warm water with 2 teaspoons ACV and 2 teaspoons of honey in the evenings, and it does help a lot.  I noticed within a few days that I was sleeping better and waking up feeling well rested

I’ve lost a lot of weight (75 lbs) since I started drinking ACV regularly, but I credit an overall healthy diet and regular exercise.  The ACV may have helped with my weight loss – it certainly didn’t hurt – but I think the claims that the pounds will melt away are an overstatement.  It takes more than a little vinegar to lose a lot of weight.

The weight loss claim in the article got me googling. On the Mayo Clinic website Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D. says:

“Although occasional use of apple cider vinegar is safe for most people, it won’t likely lead to weight loss — and it may pose problems of its own. For example:

Apple cider vinegar is highly acidic. It may irritate your throat if you drink it often or in large amounts.
Apple cider vinegar may interact with certain supplements or drugs, including diuretics and insulin. This may contribute to low potassium levels.”

Dr. Oz did a weight loss show that recommends 8 oz grapefruit juice 1 teaspoon honey and 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar before each meal for 2 weeks… watch the weight shed away

    • Tracy says:

My FIL used it successfully to lose about 5 lbs in a year. Not a GREAT weight loss, but considering ppl gain 5-10 a year on average, I’d say it’s worth a shot.

  8. You can also use ACV for cleaning, I use on floors, as window cleaner, etc, etc…behold the power of vinegar

  9. Anonymous says:

After I clean my coffee pot with white vinegar, I pour a little baking soda in the drains (tub, or sinks ) and pour the hot vinegar water down them..natural drain cleaner one cleaning solution turns into two !!

    • Tracy says:

Good idea! I always take the hot vinegar I’ve cleaned the coffee or tea pot with and dump it on weeds (only). Kills them in minutes. :)

Good article- but shouldn’t the picture be changed? The article mentions ORGANIC ACV, and Heinz’s highly processed ACV is not organic, nor does it claim to have the benefits mentioned in the article..

I’ve always bought Bragg ACV because it contains “the mother”. It also works wonderful on my dog! ;)

    • Tracy says:

Agree. I use the Braggs for ingested things and the Heinz for cleaning.

I have to comment here with the reference to the ACV…I have a booklet all about the benefits of ACV and NO WHERE does it even mention that it has to be ‘organic’…I think we’ve gotten too caught up in this organic thing and there are studies out there that prove that even if it says ‘organic’, it doesn’t guarentee that it is. I’ve shed 18 lbs using the regular ol’ ACV, and felt I needed to let people know that. THANKS!!

Bragg’s is also good for acid reflux and acid indigestion. Makes no sense to use acid to fight acid, but a tablespoon in a glass of water works better than Tums.

Works for tummy aches also. One teaspoon straight and it takes it away. My kids hate it bit it works and its cheaper than Pepito.
