Raise your hand if you love almost everything at Pottery Barn. I know I do! Unfortunately, their prices definitely give me sticker shock. Did you know IKEA has many similar options for a fraction of the price? Check out my recent finds below to update your living room.

Love seat

Pottery Barn has a beautiful love seat called the PB Basic Love Seat . It is fully customizable with 80 different color and fabric combinations.  Regular price is $1599 in canvas, currently on sale for $1399. IKEA’s Ektorp Love Seat looks very similar. It is available in 10 different colors and costs between $379.00 and $579.00 depending on your color choice. Both slipcovers are removable and can be machine washed, which adds value in my book. Just don’t tumble dry the cover. It has to air dry and then be ironed.

Armchair

Pottery Barn also sells a PB Basic Armchair that just begs for someone to curl up in with a good book and while away the afternoon. But, after footing the bill, prices start at $849, you may not be able to afford the book!  It has the same color and fabric combinations as the love seat.  IKEA has the budget friendly answer within their Ektorp Chair, which only costs between $249.00 and $399.00.  Both armchairs are available in a variety of colors.

Rug

Nothing ties a living room together better than a rug to complement your furnishings.  Looking for a nice neutral rug?  You could choose the Pottery Barn Henley Rug.  This high-quality, wool rug in 5’ by 8’ is regularly priced $329.00, currently on sale for $299.00.  Now, the IKEA Dragor Rug in beige in 5’7’’ by 7’10’’ size sells for only $49.00. The IKEA rug is much thinner, with more of an indoor/outdoor feel, while the Pottery Barn rug is thick and plush.  Even so, the similar style and dissimilar price tags would have me giving the IKEA rug serious consideration.

Living Room Totals

As much as I love Pottery Barn, their prices make it difficult to justify the expense of new furniture.  Check out the living room totals:

Total Pottery Barn Room: $2547
Total IKEA Room: $677

For all you coupon ladies, that’s a savings of nearly 75%!  Maybe you should stockpile loveseats and armchairs from IKEA to last you for a decade!

I’ve got to say that I’ve owned both (ektorp chair and ottoman and the PB square grand sofa) and although the look is similar, the quality couldn’t be more different. I agree with the person who commented that there is a time and place for IKEA but there is also a time and place for PB.

Love my IKEA Ektorp sectional. It is comfy and the right size for my family. I have two sets of covers and I am very happy with them. The covers are machine washable BUT you CANNOT put them in the dryer. They are line dry only. The other option is dry cleaning if it is snowing outside!

I have a gorgeous PB dining room table. We asked if they would sell us the floor model, and after some back and forth, they did sell it to us for about %40 off. It had a few scratches but 6 years later we are still loving it. Buying the floor model is a great way to get a piece that you love for a discount.

As an person who owns furniture from both of these brands (and Ethan Allan), my only two cents is this: You get what you pay for. If you don’t need something to last…head to IKEA, if you want a piece of furniture for the long haul, save up for that one great piece from Potterybarn/Ethan Allen, etc to go the distance in your home. There are good reasons to shop at both.

I have the Ektorp loveseat and on my last trip to IKEA, I found the white slipcovers for only $11 a piece! I bought 4…thinking now I wished I’d bought more.

As a college student I was looking for furniture for cheap. The thing I LOVE about Ikea Ektorp is that the covers are changable. I did a quick search on craigslist and found that many people sell these sofas for cheap. I found the love seat for $30… when I purchased it I made sure that the couch under the cover was in good condition with no stains. I then went to ikea and got the white slip cover for $20. It was a great deal and I basically have a brand new couch!

I bought a couch from Ikea for my office. It was very comfortable when I sat on it in the showroom… but then when i got my couch home and sat on it the couch was ROCK hard. I realized that hundreds of thousands of buts have probably sat on that couch in the showroom so of course the cushions were soft. It’s been 2 years now and the couch is STILL rock hard. I also bought a dresser at the same time and the shelves broke within about 2 months. Ikea is great but sometimes its also good to invest.

I acutally just bought the Ektorp loveseat and chair in July, Love them. Not your typical flimsy Ikea product. Very comfy too. I wanted a certain pottery barn look and even at Downeast Home I couldnt afford the clearance outlet price on the PB furniture. However, I just got the white slipcovers and 2 weeks later my house was filled with all of my neices and nephews and they destroyed them. I have yet to wash them, I’m waiting for summer and the dirt to be over. Worst case $39 max for a new cover. One day I hope to save for a different color slipcover. I highly recommend them! (Oh and not too much assembly, I promise. My husband had the arm chair and loveseat down in less than 30 minutes.)

Might I add that I have found similar seatings at Home Goods. Although they do not offer the variety of colors, I’ve found that if I wait and keep looking, something almost always turns up that suits my needs. Their price range is between $249 – $399.

I have 2 PB basic sofa’s and 1 PB basic chair and ottoman that I bought off craigslist for a pretty good price, I use the Ikea Ektorp covers and they fit perfect on these. Just recently bought the white covers for about 49.99 for the sofa’s, 29.99 for the chair, and 19.99 for the ottoman. The other colors are a bit more expensive but still a huge savings over PB

Lisa, thanks for sharing that. I need extra slipcovers but keep putting it off because the Pottery Barn ones are so pricey. I will try the Ektorp and not have to live without backup slipcovers any longer.
