The Truth about Costco: Reader Email

    costco

We received this email a few days ago, and I thought it would be a fun topic to post.

    Hi there!
I’ve just discovered your site and am LOVING it!  I’m a newbie in this coupon world, but very excited to get started at saving money.  There is one question I have for you that I haven’t found any information about.  Do you shop at Costco?  I shop there regularly, but always wonder if I’m really saving money or not.  What have you found out about whether it’s cheaper or not? Thanks so much for your time!
    -Jennifer
Like Jennifer, I used to be a regular at Costco.  I loved the cheap hotdogs for lunch, and the One Stop Shopping.  Plus, I have always been a stocker.  As in, I’ve always loved to keep a stockpile of household items.  I used to buy my toilet paper and paper towels, cleaning supplies and laundry detergent, chicken, milk, diapers, wipes, peanut butter, cheese, soup and whatever else caught my eye that week.  Now- COSTCO IS TOTALLY OVER PRICED.  I say this with all the love in my heart- but it’s true.  Except for the milk.  I can rarely beat their price on milk, but can’t justify the drive just for milk- plus I try to pay for my milk and eggs with left over Catalinas. Here are a few things I remember the price of (I may be off a little):
    _______________________________________________________
    • Costco Diapers $0.25 each
    • Krazy Diapers $0.10-$0.16 each
    • Costco Paper Towels 12 pack $19.99
    • Krazy Paper Towels 8 pack $4.00
    • Costco Brick Cheese $1.99 per lb
    • Krazy Brick Cheese $1.49 per lb
    • Costco- Progresso Soup $1.30 per can
    • Krazy Progresso Soup $.65 per can
    • Costco Frozen Chicken Breast $2.00/lb
    • Krazy Fresh Chicken Breast $1.67-$1.89/lb
    _______________________________________________________
The bottom line, is that Costco has good deals, but you have to Cherry Pick, the same as other stores.  Many of their prices are okay- like their 5 lb Brick of Cheese isn’t horribly overpriced- but Paper Towels, Chicken and most other things are way too expensive!
I am no longer a Costco Member, as Joanie says:

What do you think of Costco?

    Thanks for the email Jennifer!
