Earn Cash for Your Grocery Receipts with Receipt Hog

There are so many things that I love about my smartphone. I can check emails, play games, surf the web – even make money! It seems like there are tons of apps out these days that reward you for grocery shopping. Receipt Hog is one of the latest shopping rewards apps to hit the market, but this one is a little different — you get rewarded just for taking pictures of your receipts!

What is Receipt Hog?

Receipt Hog is a mobile app that rewards users for snapping pictures of their grocery receipts. For each receipt you upload a photo of, you’ll earn coins which can be redeemed for cash! If you’re wondering why in the world anyone would pay for your grocery store receipts, it’s actually pretty simple. Receipt Hog is a market research company that works with consumer goods brands. The data that they collect from the receipts (and any surveys they give you) is summarized in market research reports for the brands who purchase this information. However, your personal information is kept anonymous and never sold to third parties.

How does it work?

Receipt Hog is extremely easy to use. Simply snap a photo of your qualifying grocery store receipt, and you’ll be rewarded coins. The app has different levels — the more receipts you upload, the higher the level you’ll achieve. You’ll start at the first level, Runt, which allows you to earn 10 coins per receipt. After you’ve uploaded your first 10 receipts, you’ll level up to Piglet, which rewards 15 coins per receipt. The levels go all the way up to, yep, you guessed it — Hog! Once you get to Hog you’ll earn a whopping 25 coins per receipt! One of the perks of Receipt Hog is that it doesn’t matter what items you purchase, so there’s no scanning barcodes or making sure you buy a particular brand. Just snap your receipt, and you’re done! At select times, you may also be asked to complete a short survey, which will earn you additional coins.

How many receipts can I submit?

You can upload up to 20 receipts per week and no more than three from the same store in the same day. So if you were planning to do six transactions at the same store, you can only upload three of those that same day. However, Receipt Hog allows you to submit receipts for up to seven days after purchase, so you can upload those extra receipts the next day!

How much can I earn?

One of the best parts about Receipt Hog is not just that it’s so simple, but it pays out cash! Currently, you can redeem 1000 coins for $5.00 (paid via Paypal), but if you decide to save your coins you’ll get an even better value. Currently, 1800 coins can be redeemed for $10.00, 3200 coins for $20.00 and 4500 coins is worth $30. You can also donate the cash you’ve earned to select charities, including the United Way, the American Cancer Society, and the Pat Tillman Foundation. Receipt Hog also plans to offer gift cards and products in the near future, in addition to cash.

What stores qualify?

Receipts from any store where you purchase groceries are accepted! You can upload receipts from national grocers, local shops, convenience stores, club stores, drugstores and even pet stores!

How do I get Receipt Hog?

Currently, Receipt Hog is only available for the iPhone. However, the company hopes to make the app available to Android users by the end of May 2013. You can stay updated with the latest Receipt Hog news by following their Facebook page.

I have been using this app for a while now and love it! I sometimes forget that I have it, so I don’t have that many points stored up, but it is SO easy to use! I have never had any problem with them not accepting a receipt because it was blurry. I just try to always snap pictures of my reciepts under a light.

Another mobile app, and I don’t have a smart phone. Maybe I should cancel cable so I can afford one…

Boost Mobile has an unlimited shrinkage plan where after a period of time (no contracts) you would end up paying only $40 a month for an android plan. Even before the shrinkage time period it’s much more affordable. Might be helpful to you.

    • Katherine Weaver says:

The virgin mobile plan I’m on is only 35 dollars a month for 300 minutes and unlimited data and texting. You can usually score a used phone or a cheap smart phone for as little as 40 dollars on amazon. And t-mobile has plans for 50 a month and phones you can pay off a little each month… I wouldn’t get one on an actual contract plan though, they are rip offs.

Installed it and then tried to scan my first receipt. It told me that was not available with the ‘free version’ ?????????…

    • Jason says:

There is only a free version so I’m not sure what was going on. I’d try scanning a different receipt!

I don’t know if this is correct or not as I had 4 receipts from Walgreens on the same day and I thought I could just wait a day or two to take a picture of the one that didn’t take because of the store limit but it still would not accept it saying that it limits how many receipts it takes from one store on THAT day, going by the date on the receipt, I will check again in another day but I’d limit 3 transactions in the same store a day if you care about Receipt Hog anyway :)

  15. Awesome! Another way to get some money back from my shopping. Thanks KCL!

  16. L says:

Just a heads up, receipt hog is very picky about the image. If it’s blurry at all they will not take it. I’ve taken pics of receipts in the same light/place/position for Ibotta and endorse and both took the receipt but receipt hog said it was too blurry :/.

  17. Katherine Weaver says:

That sucks that it’s not available to android, I’d easily get the 20 receipts a week…
