The weather is getting colder and the days are getting shorter.  And while I love the coziness of fall and winter, sometimes the kids need some extra entertainment.  This great idea reuses toilet paper rolls (which we all have!) and will keep kids occupied for hours using their imaginations.  Perfect.

Items you will need:

  • 2 cardboard bathroom tissue tubes
  • 1 sheet camouflage felt
  • Scissors
  • White craft glue
  • Craft foam to match your felt
  • 6 rubber bands
  • 40" piece of twine or yarn
  • Pen

Tip: You can use any felt that you like; it doesn't have to be camouflage.  You don’t even need felt–you can use construction paper or even tissue paper.  If you like the camouflage felt but can't find it, you can make your own.  Simply glue shades of the same color onto a similarly-colored piece of felt or construction paper.

Step 1 Place felt design side down and cut in half.

Step 2 Roll up the cardboard tube inside the felt, gluing as you go. Trim any extra felt. Repeat for the second tube.

Step 3  Cut a strip of craft foam about 3/4" wide and long enough to go around the end of the tube. Glue the strip around the end of the cardboard tube.  Make sure to line up the felt seam with the craft foam strip seam.  Secure with a rubber band, and repeat with the second tube. If you are lazy like I am, you could skip this step and make a more basic version of these binoculars.

Step 4:  Cut another strip long enough to go around the opposite end.  This strip needs to be about 1/2" wide. Glue and secure with a rubber band. Place the tubes together with the seams facing each other. Put a rubber band around the middle of both tubes to hold them in place.

Step 5:  Using a pen, poke a hole in the side of the tube, about 1/2" below the 1/2" wide craft foam strip. Put the end of the twine into the hole from the outside of the tube. Bring it through the tube and tie a double knot. Trim off extra and carefully pull the twine taut. The knot will keep the twine from coming out of the hole. Repeat on the other side. Use a generous amount of white craft glue in between the two tubes. Turn over and do the other side as well. Let them dry completely, several hours or overnight.  Then you can remove the rubber bands and use your binoculars.
