Hosting weekly coupon swaps with your deal-savvy comrades is an incredible idea for many reasons. Swappers can ditch unwanted coupons, stock up on favorite coupons, and help their friends out – not only by exchanging coupons, but by sharing tips and advice.
I've been attending coupon swaps for several months now, and in addition to making me a smarter and more prepared shopper, my swaps are an ideal time to socialize with some of my favorite people. Since so many of us are busy with work and kids, it is important to pump some fun into coupon swap night so each participant gets a full dose of couponing, gabbing, food, and laughter. So here are a few ideas to liven up that coupon swap:
Play Coupon Poker
Coupon poker is as enjoyable as a night at the casino, without the high stakes. Invite your coupon clipping buddies over for drinks, snacks and a friendly game of poker where current coupons are the chips. Last time I had a ladies' poker night with my fellow couponers I went all-in and left with a huge stash, but participants can also choose to play conservatively if that's their style.
During your weekly coupon swap, look over KCL's Freebie posts to learn where and how to snag free items. As each couponer gathers her deals for the week, she can try to grab one or two extra free items (if she has the necessary coupons and the stores she visits have the products.) Then, during the next week's event, participants who were able to snag extra freebies can get their swapping on for not only coupons but freebies too. I am always excited when one of my fellow couponers is willing to swap an item that was sold out at the time I visited the store. This is also a fun way to pass unwanted freebies on to friends who will give them a good home.
A Door Prize
Incorporate some friendly competition into your coupon swap by having each participant take turns bringing an extra Sunday paper to give away as a door prize. As the night progresses, distribute a numbered ticket or scrap of paper to each couponer who successfully completes a swap. The more coupons your guests swap with one another, the more tickets they will receive. Toss all the entries into a bag at the end of the night, and the lucky couponer whose name is drawn becomes the proud new owner of a fresh, crisp Sunday paper stuffed full of coupons.
Munch on a Frugal Potluck
Have each participant bring a yummy dish to the weekly swap. Dishes must include at least one ingredient that was purchased at a discount during the week with coupons. Members of my swapping group jot down their recipes and make enough copies to distribute to everyone. Since coupon releases and sales often occur in cycles, the entire group benefits from building recipe collections that include stockpile-worthy staples.
Couponing and a Movie
Make the mundane task of organizing your newly acquired coupons into an epic ladies night by extending your coupon swap to include some movie watching, chatting and binder replenishment. Have swap participants take turns bringing a favorite movie along to the swap. Once everyone has finished swapping, pop some popcorn, pour some drinks and have everyone relax in the living room while being productive at the same time.
