Extreme Couponing Tip: Look to the Back for Freshest Products

Many stores stock products with the latest expiration at the back of the shelves and keep the ones with closer expiration dates near the front since most customers will take the product closest to them. This helps the store ensure their products get rotated properly and are sold before they have to be marked down for quick sell. Expiration or "best by" dates are usually stamped in black ink and found on the top or bottom of the product.

But Krazy Couponers and savvy shoppers searching for a product they won't use immediately will check the back of the shelf to see if there's a later expiration date available. This gives more flexibility on when to use the product and enables you to have fresher items on hand.

Check the back of the shelf for everything from boxed and canned food to yogurt, bread, chips and crackers. When items are stacked on top of each other, such as bagged potatoes, carrots,  prepped veggies, and deli selections like cheese and hummus, search the bottom of the stack. If you’re in the market for gum or candy bars at checkout, opt for the registers that are open the most often because their stock rotates more frequently and gets replenished often with new shipments.

Remember to also employ this tactic in your own stockpile by adding the freshest product behind the older ones for the best rotation!
