If you've ever shopped at CVS, Rite Aid, or Walgreens, you may have overheard the clerk ask a customer, "Do you have your card?" It never ceases to amaze me that so many reply, "No, don't have one, don't need one." Do they not understand the power this little piece of plastic wields?!

With the recent changes to Rite Aid and Walgreens rewards programs, this is the perfect time to review the benefits and policies of CVS ExtraCare, Rite Aid Wellness+ and Walgreens Balance Rewards programs.

A rewards card offers regular product discounts, reward points earned through promotional transactions, quarterly bonus payouts, exclusive online promo codes, advance promotional notices, percentage off savings passes, and even free health screenings. This translates into free products and even some extra spending money when you understand how to stack coupons and roll rewards into future transactions.

For all cards, there are two ways to register. Visit your local pharmacy and complete a registration form in person. The card will be attached to the form and can be used immediately. Or register online for a card that will be shipped to you within a week. Once you have your card, make qualifying purchases and simply scan your card when you check out. The register will automatically recognize eligible coupons and promotions.

The second part of this series focuses on the Rite Aid Wellness+ card. With enrollment in the Wellness+ program, members receive many benefits and can easily load, manage and redeem coupons.

Instead of printing +Up Rewards at the bottom of the receipt, Rite Aid now loads them onto your Wellness+ card (part of the new Load2Card program). The bottom of the receipt shows the amount of the reward loaded to card along with the product details and expiration date. Rewards are made available by 6 a.m. the day after they are issued.

Rite Aid "48 and 49" Coupons

These are coupons found in the weekly ads that can be stacked with manufacturer coupons. No more than one "48" Rite Aid Valuable coupon, one "49" Rite Aid Manufacturer coupon, and one "5" Manufacturer coupon can be used on a single item.

Rite Aid has joined forces with uPromise to help build college savings every time you shop.

Video Plus Rewards/Ad Perk

Rite Aid offers a unique opportunity to save even more in their store with monthly videos from many manufactures. Watch a short video and enter a code, then print a coupon for a product which can be stacked with a manufacturer coupon for significant savings.

Single Check Rebate Program

A monthly rebate program is offered on qualifying promotional items. Following a store transaction, go home and immediately submit the single check rebate online. To get the rebate and see if it qualifies, have the store number, register number, transaction date and transaction number.

Loyalty Program

Rite Aid offers a fantastic loyalty program where members earn one point for every dollar spent on non-prescriptions (which earn 25 points). Reach 500 points and earn the choice of one wellness reward such as a gym membership, magazine subscription or health screening.

+Up Rewards

My favorite aspect of +Up Rewards is that they work like cash instead of coupons! This means if you want to buy a $10.00 item, you can use a $2.00 +Up Reward, a $3.00 +Up Reward, and a $5.00 +Up Reward and not spend anything out of pocket!

+Up Rewards limitations

  • Rewards expire two weeks from the moment they're issued.
  • Receive +Up Rewards on certain items up to the specified household limit.
  • +Up Rewards Are Linked to a Wellness+ Card. Provide the phone number associated with the account to redeem rewards when the card isn’t handy.
  • Rite Aid limits the amount of rebates received on an item (usually between one and four).
  • One +Up Rewards Card per Household.
  • When purchasing a promotional item and receiving +Up Rewards, you can’t use that reward as a form of payment in a new transaction for the same product.
  • Purchases must be equal to, or exceed, the +Up Reward amount.
