One of the secrets to a healthy-sized stockpile is a significant supply of coupon inserts from the Sunday paper.

That search for newspaper inserts is even more important when traveling: just because it’s time to take a vacation doesn’t mean your budget should go on vacation, too! But buying multiple copies of the local paper can get quite costly, and when traveling, the budget is already stretched thin. Here are some ways to pick up extra copies of coupon inserts for free while traveling!

If you happen to be in an airport terminal on a Sunday, thank your lucky stars! Many people buy a newspaper while they wait for their flight. When they are finished with it, they may leave it on a nearby table or chair, and often the inserts are still inside! Feeling especially brave? Consider asking people who are reading the paper if they want their inserts. It is surprising how often people are happy to pass them on rather than carry them onto the plane.

Hotel lobbies

Many hotels offer a complimentary newspaper to guests. Often the paper comes with the local inserts! During my last stay, I happily accepted my copy and also found five others scattered throughout the lobby.

Highway rest areas

This is another hot spot for newspaper "leave-behinds." Look in the dining area, and again consider  asking people who are reading a paper if they are willing to share their inserts. Remember: Many people who are traveling don’t want the extra bulk of a newspaper.

The corner store

While not free, it is still possible to save money here depending on the area you are visiting. Check the price of the paper on the newsstand: It might be cheaper than the price of your hometown paper.

Collecting inserts when traveling has another benefit besides saving while out of town. Don't forget that coupon inserts are regional. How many times have you been let down on a great deal only because you didn't receive the needed coupon? By getting inserts in other regions, you will increase your chances of getting the coupons you need. Happy Hunting!
