15 Weird (but Brilliant!) Ways to Make Your Home Smell Good

1. Hang eucalyptus sprigs in your shower.

I found fresh eucalyptus sprigs at my local florist, but you can also find them at most gardening shops for a few dollars. Tie 2-3 sprigs together and use a rubber suction cup or a Command hook (like this one made just for showers) to hang them near or onto your shower head. When the heat and steam from your shower hit the eucalyptus, natural essentials oils will be released.

2. Put a few drops of essential oil on your furnace filter every time you change it.

3. Make an air freshener with sea salt and citrus rinds.

Scoop out the insides of lemons and limes with a knife or spoon, and fill halves with sea salt. For extra smell-good fragrance power, add cloves or fresh herbs like basil and mint and place in an area where it can soak up bad odors.

Note: Place in areas where kids and pets can’t get to them.

4. Deodorize the air in your car with leftover candle wax in a glass candle holder.

On hot days, the wax will melt and release the fragrance you already love throughout your vehicle.

5. Place a bowl of plain oats in your fridge.

Since oats are naturally absorbent, they’ll soak up stinky smells like a sponge.

6. Clip a car air freshener to your home’s vent.

Or, make your own clip-on air freshener with a clothespin (see #14).

7. Absorb smells and catch drips in a trash can with newspaper.

8. Put a drop or two of essential oil on cotton balls and place them around your house.

I like to place cotton balls in dresser drawers, in pillowcases, in between couch cushions, and in bathroom cabinets.

Note: If you have kids or pets, be sure cotton balls are out of reach.

9. Fill a bowl with vinegar and place it in a room that needs refreshing.

Vinegar does an amazing job at neutralizing odors.

10. Use a dryer sheet in your luggage to keep clothes smelling fresh.

11. Bake vanilla extract.

Pour about two tablespoons of vanilla extract into an oven-safe dish or mug and bake at 300 degrees for 20 minutes.

12. Boil cinnamon sticks, apple peels, orange rinds, and whole cloves in water.

13. Freeze lemons in vinegar to freshen your garbage disposal.

14. Make your own car air freshener by applying 5-10 drops of essential oil onto a clothespin.

15. Secure dryer sheets to the back of your A/C vents.

Forgo pricey air fresheners by securing dryer sheets to the back of your A/C vents with tape or by tucking the edges beneath the diffuser. Let the air flow move the scent through your home.
