Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Cornwall, famously quipped, “You can never be too thin or too rich.” In my opinion, you can never have too many coupons, too many page clicks on KrazyCouponLady.com or too many purses. Unlike those tighter-than-your-Spanx skinny jeans you bought after your 10-day bout with Montezuma’s revenge, purses are always the right size—well, unless you try to stuff your 4-inch coupon binder into your dainty evening clutch. In the market for a new purse? If so, check out some of the “clutch” handbag trends of the season: satchel bags and purses with tassels.
While satchels have become a hot handbag in recent years, they’ve actually been around since Roman times. Satchel bags were called “Loculus,” which means “little place” in Latin. Fashion historians believe they were used to carry personal belongings such as food rations. And in 17th century England, all the cool kids carried “satchel” bags to school.
The 3.1 Phillip Lim satchel bag is a must-have bag of the season, and has even been spotted on the stylish arms of celebrities like Lauren Conrad. This Phillip Lim satchel bag was such a hit that Phillip Lim even included a lower-cost version of this bag in his Phillip Lim for Target collection that was released in September 2013. However, unless you were at your local Target the second this bag was put on the shelf, you likely went home empty-handed. If you love everything about the 3.1 Phillip Lim Mini Satchel bag except its sky-high price, check out the great dupe from JustFab.com. The 3.1 Phillp Lim bag measures 8″W x 7″H and is available in red and black leather; the JustFab.com knock-off is slightly bigger at 9″W x 7.5″H and is available in black and red faux leather.

Like the Phillip Lim satchel, the Proenza Schouler satchel is also a popular designer bag that has been carried by fashionable celebrities including Ashley Olsen, Jessica Alba and Leighton Meester. For an excellent knockoff of the Proenza Schouler bag, check out ShoeDazzle’s Langley Satchel for a 97% savings off the designer version price.
While St. Patrick’s Day has come and gone, adding a pop of green to your outfit never goes out of style. I love the Michael Kors green satchel with a removable crossbody strap, but I don’t love its $358 price tag. Get the look for less with Target’s $34.99 version of the bag. This bag will look equally chic with an all-black or black and white office ensemble or jeans and a white t-shirt on the weekend.

Tasseled accessories are a classic, preppy style that has recently experienced a fashion resurgence in the form of tasseled necklaces and earrings, tasseled loafers for both men and women and my personal favorite, handbags with tassel adornments. If you want a bucket-bag, tasseled purse, there’s the expensive Tory Burch version or the frugally priced Old Navy knockoff. The Old Navy version, which is made out of faux leather, is available in mocha and navy. Tassels are not only fashionable but also functional as they can give you something substantial to grip on to while opening and closing your bag.
Splurge: Tory Burch Robinson Drawstring Bucket Bag in Luggage Brown; $495 at SaksFifthAvenue.com
Steal: Old Navy Faux-Leather Tasseled Bucket Bag in Mocha (also available in Navy); $32.94 at OldNavy.com
Savings: $462.96 (94% savings)
If you prefer a tote-bag style, Coach makes a pricey leather tote with tassels for $298, or Old Navy makes a great dupe in tan, snake, mocha brown or black faux leather for $39.94. I personally love that the Old Navy version of the bag zips at the top for added security.
