Every once in a while, especially when I find an awesome deal at my local grocery store, I like to cook entire chickens at dinner time. Because there are only three of us in my family, it’s easy to let the leftovers go to waste. To prevent this, I like to divide the leftover chicken into smaller servings and pop them into the freezer. These smaller servings make it easier to whip up a healthy and flavorful meal even on a busy weeknight.

How to Freeze Cooked Chicken

  1. Freeze large pieces of chicken, such as chicken breasts or drumsticks. Or shred or chop the cooked chicken into smaller pieces and divide into individual portions.
  2. Wrap large pieces of chicken in plastic wrap and then again in a freezer bag to protect against freezer burn. Place shredded or chopped chicken in freezer bags and squeeze out as much air as possible. You can even use a straw to suck out the excess air to mimic a vacuum seal.
  3. Label the container with the type of chicken and any flavorings or spices you used during the cooking process.
  4. Store cooked chicken in your freezer for up to 3 months.
  5. Thaw larger pieces of chicken in the refrigerator overnight. You can throw shredded or chopped pieces directly into pasta sauce, soup or stir fry – it will thaw as it cooks!
