Every once in a while, especially when I find an awesome deal at my local grocery store, I like to cook entire chickens at dinner time. Because there are only three of us in my family, it’s easy to let the leftovers go to waste. To prevent this, I like to divide the leftover chicken into smaller servings and pop them into the freezer. These smaller servings make it easier to whip up a healthy and flavorful meal even on a busy weeknight.
How to Freeze Cooked Chicken
- Freeze large pieces of chicken, such as chicken breasts or drumsticks. Or shred or chop the cooked chicken into smaller pieces and divide into individual portions.
- Wrap large pieces of chicken in plastic wrap and then again in a freezer bag to protect against freezer burn. Place shredded or chopped chicken in freezer bags and squeeze out as much air as possible. You can even use a straw to suck out the excess air to mimic a vacuum seal.
- Label the container with the type of chicken and any flavorings or spices you used during the cooking process.
- Store cooked chicken in your freezer for up to 3 months.
- Thaw larger pieces of chicken in the refrigerator overnight. You can throw shredded or chopped pieces directly into pasta sauce, soup or stir fry – it will thaw as it cooks!
