A weekend-long baking project always sounds like fun, but sometimes the joy ends around that tenth batch. Why not freeze some of that dough and have it handy for another weekend? Many types of cookie dough such as gingerbread, chocolate chip, sugar, oatmeal, shortbread and peanut butter freeze well. However, stay away from cookie doughs that contain a lot of liquid, which are more difficult to freeze. All you need is some good quality plastic wrap, freezer bags and a permanent marker!
How To Freeze Cookie Dough:
- Make your favorite cookie dough recipe. Avoid cookies that are made with an egg white base. These don’t stand up well to freezing.
- Mold the dough into balls or roll it into a log so that it can just be sliced when you are ready to bake. Tip: Place balls or sliced dough on cookie sheet and put in the freezer for an hour or two. The dough will then keep its shape when it is transfered into a freezer bag. This makes throwing it from the freezer to the oven a cinch. No need to wait until it’s thawed.
- Double wrap the dough log in plastic wrap or simply throw the balls or slices in a freezer bag. Squeeze out the air and seal it tight to help prevent freezer burn.
- Write the date on the package with a permanent marker.
- Store cookie dough in the freezer for up to three months.
- Remove the dough from the freezer when ready to use it. Defrost it in the refrigerator for a few hours and then bake as normal!
