Raise Money Online with These Top 5 Crowdfunding Sites

Natasha.Stroud
Raise Money Online with These Top 5 Crowdfunding Sites

crowdfunding copyIf you’ve ever dreamed of starting your own business or raising money for a cause, you’re not alone. Many people relish the idea of turning their hobby or ideas into reality. Unfortunately, most people lack the funds necessary to get their projects off the ground. Sure, you could save up for years, take out a loan or beg friends and family to invest in your idea, but there’s a simpler way to turn those dreams into a reality—crowdfunding! Crowdfunding, a way of raising money from large groups of people, is a great option for those looking to start a business, as well as people looking to raise money for a cause, charity, political campaign and much more! If you’ve been thinking about ways to raise some cash, check out these top crowdfunding sources.

Kickstarter

One of the first and largest crowdfunding sites, Kickstarter is specifically for those looking to finance creative projects. Kickstarter doesn’t allow charity or “fund-my-lifestyle” projects, so if you were thinking about raising money for a new wardrobe you’ll have to look elsewhere! However, if you’re looking to raise money for a clothing line, book, food business or any other creative project, Kickstarter may be the crowdfunding source for you. Kickstarter uses an all-or-nothing funding design, meaning that if you reach your goal, you get the cash. However, if your campaign is unsuccessful, you can always relaunch with a new goal. If you’re wondering why people donate—in addition to simply seeing a product that interests them come to life—most campaigns on Kickstarter, as well as other crowdfunding sites, offer rewards at different pledge levels. For example, if you’re writing a book, you may offer your backers a copy of the book, a thank-you mention in the introduction, or an autographed copy of the book. If you’re wondering about fees, Kickstarter charges 5% of the money raised plus 3%-5% in payment fees, but they don’t charge you anything if your campaign is unsuccessful.

Indiegogo

Although Indiegogo originally started as a source for filmmakers to find backers, the site has expanded to become one of the top crowdsourcing sites for personal causes. In fact, Indiegogo boasts that anyone with a bank account can start a campaign to raise money for anything. The site has housed famous campaigns such as those to start a Tesla Museum, to raise money for the bullied bus monitor and even to help fund George Takei’s musical. Indiegogo also allows you to keep all the funds that you raise even if you don’t hit your goal. However, their fee of 4% (plus 3% in PayPal fees) jumps to 9% if you don’t meet your goal.

Rockethub

If your idea is science-based, Rockethub may be the crowdfunding source for you. This site, which also accepts campaigns for anything related to art, business and social good deeds, has become the top site for science and technology projects. In fact, A&E recently joined forces with Rockethub, becoming the first TV network to back a crowdfunding site. A&E not only provides support to projects that they like, but they also feature them on their network and in their magazine. If you’ve got a great science or technology idea, consider using Rockethub, and your project may just end up on TV! Rockethub, which charges a 4% commission fee and 4% credit card fee, allows you to keep all of the funds raised whether or not you meet your goal. However, if you don’t make your target, the fee jumps to 8% in addition to the credit card fee.

FundRazr

Like Indiegogo, FundRazr boasts that anyone, anywhere can use FundRazr for absolutely anything. Campaigns on FundRazr include everything from personal causes, political campaigns, charities, entrepreneurial ideas and much more. Some of the fun campaigns that have been spotted on FundRazr included roller derbies, bamboo sunglasses, comic books and even projects to help fund local community centers. FundRazr allows you to keep all of the money that you raise without the requirement of meeting a goal and charges 5% plus 2.9% in payment fees. All that’s required to get started on FundRazr is a Facebook or Google+ page and a PayPal or WePay account!

GoGetFunding

GoGetFunding is another site that welcomes all types of campaigns—not just those in the creative or entrepreneurial fields—so you can raise money for anything! It has become a top site for personal campaigns such as medical bills, funerals and even honeymoons. One of the nice features to this site is the fact that they have fundraising coaches on hand to offer tips and support to help you create a successful campaign. The coaches will offer assistance in every aspect from setting up your campaign to promoting it and more. GoGetFunding, which allows users to keep all of the funding that they raise, offers another perk—low fees. Their flat fee of just 4% is one of the lowest in the crowdfunding arena, allowing you to keep more money for your cause.

The 5 Best Pet-Friendly Vacation Destinations in America, Part II

Shannon Cutts
The 5 Best Pet-Friendly Vacation Destinations in America, Part II

dog-lakeIn this second of a two-part series, we continue exploring some of the best pet-friendly vacation destinations in America. If you love traveling with your pet and are always on the hunt for new, fun, pet-friendly getaways, this list may give you fresh ideas. And if you’ve been contemplating traveling with your pet for the first time, maybe these ideas will give you inspiration to plan a trip you both will love!

1. Lake Tahoe, California / Nevada

Once you’ve been, it may be hard to imagine a more perfect owner-pet getaway than beautiful Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe actually spans the border between California and Nevada, which means there’s plenty of outdoor fun for you both during the day, and plenty of fun for you alone at night when your furry companion is resting from the day’s activities (think casinos and shows galore).

How to visit and save

So long as you avoid the summer and winter tourist seasons (June-August, November-December) you can find good deals on vacation packages through the many resorts—some of which may bundle other perks in with lodging. You may also find you save more by staying on the California (South Lake Tahoe) side, which lacks the year-round gambling traffic. If you don’t find the price you want at the resorts’ off-season, try some of the many cabins and bungalows that are scattered around the lake itself.

Pet-friendly activities

It would be impossible to list all the fun things you and your pet can do together. Hiking, swimming, mountain biking—the area is so pet-friendly your pet can even come fishing with you! Many eateries and shops are also pet-friendly.

Pet regulations

As long as your pet gets along well with other pets, is leash-trained, and is well behaved, you should have no problems.

2. Bar Harbor, Maine

Bar Harbor has always been a pet-friendly town, but it certainly hasn’t hurt that President Obama and his family are known to enjoy vacationing here with the First Dog, Bo. As long as dogs are leashed, there’s little you and your pet can’t enjoy together.

How to visit and save

Whatever you do, avoid the summer months and especially the 4th of July, when (literally) more than a million people visit the area. Because June is the first warm month, if you visit January – May, you may shiver, but you’ll get much better rates. In the fall, October is the prettiest month and you can avoid the holiday rush—and holiday prices. Also, because everything is so close by and trolley service is excellent, don’t spend money reserving a rental car until you get there and see if you really need it.

Pet-friendly activities

As long as dogs are leashed, you and your pet can do pretty much anything together, from walking or hiking the miles of paths to taking a fun cruise on the pet-friendly Margaret Todd cruise ship to enjoying sand and surf on Bar Island. You can eat and shop together as well—be sure to visit local shop, Bark Harbor, while you’re there and learn about more seasonal pet-friendly excursions.

Pet regulations

Dogs must be leash-trained, friendly and well-behaved—and you must be willing to pick up after your dog.

3. Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville isn’t only one of the prettiest towns in all of America, but it’s also one of the friendliest to pets. In fact, recently the state of North Carolina enacted an actual law permitting all restaurants to accept pets (cats and dogs) for outdoor dining!

How to visit and save

Asheville made Southern Living magazine’s top 10 list of best budget vacation getaways. There’s plenty to see and do all year round, eateries and lodging is reasonably priced (even at the historic Biltmore!) and there’s plenty to do that’s free. Because Asheville has traditionally mild winters and nearby slopes, as long as you avoid the major winter holiday dates, you should find reasonable prices on most amenities.

Pet-friendly activities

You can enjoy the heck out of walking and hiking together, shopping and eating together, visiting local sights (like the historic Biltmore hotel) together and more. For lodging and more, be sure to check out Barkwells, the “dog lovers vacation retreat.”

Pet regulations

Dogs must be leashed and cleaned up after. All pets must be socialized and well behaved.

4. Grand Canyon, Arizona

DogFriendly.com recently voted the Grand Canyon as the “#1 Dog Friendly National Park.” Plus, it’s one of the original Seven Wonders of the World—‘nuff said!

How to visit and save

The best weather months are also the busiest tourist months. There’s a world of difference between trying to view the canyon while fighting summer crowds and visiting on the off-season when tourists are rarer. For the best rates and lodging availability (park lodging is limited so reserving early is key) visit in early spring (February-April) or later fall (mid-September-October).

Pet-friendly activities

You and your pet can hike the South Rim trails together, attend the Ranger-led programs and tours and enjoy the casual outdoor eateries.

Pet regulations

Pets must be leashed at all times. You must clean up after your pet—the Grand Canyon is a national park so the area is strict.

5. Bonus for fun: Woofstock, Toronto, Canada

Although technically just across the border, Woofstock is billed as “North America’s largest dog party”—more than 300 thousand pet lovers attend with their dogs each year! In fact, the event is so popular that it happens twice annually—once in the summer and once in the winter.

How to visit and save

Woofstock is free to attend so your only costs will be for travel, lodging and meals.

Pet-friendly activities

Billed as “a weekend of doggie food, fashion and fun,” there’s little you won’t encounter at Woofstock. Some examples include dog speed dating, dog beauty pageants, dog agility contests, stupid dog tricks—if you can fit the word “dog” into it somewhere, count on it being included as an event at Woofstock! Learn more at the official website: http://www.woofstock.ca/whatiswoofstock.htm

Pet regulations

All the usual regulations apply—dogs should be friendly, trained, leashed (unless otherwise specified) and owners should pick up after their pets.

Walgreens Extreme Couponing (Week of 4/20): $5.00 or Less

walgreens-5-or-lessWalgreens has a Balance Rewards Loyalty Program. Click here to read about it. Here you will also find a chart indicating how many rewards dollars you’ll receive when you earn so many Points. According to the chart, 1,000 Balance Rewards Points equals $1.00–$1.25, depending on when you choose to cash out your Points.

Before shopping at Walgreens, you might want to review the Walgreens How-To Video. Walgreens is certainly the hardest drugstore to shop, but it has the best deals! What I like most is that you can repeat the deals and get more product. The limits are just one per transaction, so you can get more than one item–just don’t clear the shelves!
