DIY: Rock On with Homemade Rock Candy!

I am going to ask you a very obvious question. Do your children like candy? They do? Well, you will earn mother of the year status when you whip up this batch of good old fashioned rock candy. It will not only satisfy their sweet tooth, but they will have a sweet time being able to create the candy themselves! All you need is some sugar and patience, and in no time you will have a batch ready to go!

Here is what you will need:

  • 1 bag of sugar
  • bamboo skewers
  • clean glass jars
  • clothespins
  • funnel
  • food coloring
  • water

Here is what you will do!

  • Trim down your skewers to fit in your jars. You’ll also want to get rid of the sharp points by just breaking off. Dip each stick in water, then roll in sugar, coating them well. Let each stick dry completely and set aside. This gives the sugar a base it can stick to when it starts to crystallize!
  •  Mix equal parts of water and sugar in a pot on med-high heat until dissolved. Stir well! Then continue to add sugar until you have AT LEAST a 2:1 ratio. You will notice that it will get to a point where it won’t dissolve anymore. The consistency should be a sticky, sugary syrup. Keep mixing until mixture starts to simmer.
  •  Allow your syrup to cool for 10 minutes and ladle into your jars using a funnel. Careful: it is still pretty hot at this point. You can use the tips that you trimmed off the skewers and dip them into concentrated food coloring paste or liquid. Then just swirl the skewer into your hot syrup mixture.
  • Then attach a clothespin to each skewer (the ones you dipped in sugar and let dry) and place in cup. Make sure the skewer isn’t touching the bottom or sides of jar. The crystals need room to grow!
  • Place your jars in a warm location with lots of natural light. Allow them to sit for several days. Notice how the crystallization is taking place! Gradually it will become greater and thicker, and the rock candy will start to take shape.
  • After about seven days, your rock candy will be ready! Just remove the sticks and enjoy!  When you are finished, there will be crystallized sugar in the bottom of your jars. Just run hot water into them and chip it out with a butter knife. It comes out pretty easily!

If you are feeling super-ambitious, you can add a few drops of lemon or vanilla extract to your mixture to flavor your candy, but the plain sugar recipe tastes pretty great by itself. So head to the kitchen and try whipping up a batch of rock candy today!
