Easy Homemade Citrus Scrub

Ah, I love the smell of citrus in the morning.  It makes me feel like I can actually start my day with the few hours of sleep I got.  That’s why I love this homemade citrus scrub.  It smells so yummy and makes me feel energized, plus it exfoliates and softens my skin at the same time.  And it’s really simple and fast to make – gotta love that!

What You Will Need:

  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 cup sea salt
  • 1-2 slices of lemon
  • 1-2 slices of orange

Directions:

  1. Put the oil and salt in a bowl or blender.
  2. Chop up the orange and lemon slices and put them in your bowl or blender.  If you’re using a bowl, chop them as finely as you can or omit them entirely.
  3. Blend everything together and put in your container.  That’s it!

Can you use kosher salt instead of sea salt?
I have tons of home grown lemons, navel oranges, and satsumas. I am sure that I can put at least part of the pulp and some of the peeling to good use. I bet that grapefruit would be wonderful too!
Please let me know about the kosher salt versus the sea salt.

Could you add essential oil instead of the fruit for fragrance purposes that don’t have to be refrigerated ?

  3. You can add a tsp of pure vitamin e oil to the mixture to preserve it longer. Homemade scrubs are the best can’t wait to try this one!

  4. How long of a shelf life does something like this have?

The best part is that you can use the excess on a salad after scrubbing your face :-)

  6. You can also use sugar, for people who have dry skin, sometimes the salt can burn. Plus, sugar prevents bacteria growth, so there’s no huge risk of any funky stuff growing!

Can’t wait to try this recipe. This would be a great new mommy gift so she can enjoy a bit of just her time. I also have the same concerns with shelf life and where it should be stored.

Because it has no preservatives, it won’t last forever! Make sure to only use clean, dry hands to avoid adding water to the container, and store in the fridge. It should last anywhere from several weeks to a month. Without the fruit, it would last indefinitely stored anywhere. Hope that helps!
