Save on Outdoor Gear with Deal-Searching Sites

Chereen.Langrill

Exploring the great outdoors is an ideal way to spend a Saturday, but finding gear on a budget isn’t always easy. Paying for mountain bikes, trail shoes, hydration packs, and GPS products can be more painful than an uphill ride. There are plenty of great deals out there for all kinds of outdoor gear, clothing and equipment — the trick is knowing where to look.

Here are some deal-searching sites that make it easier to find the best prices on all things outdoors.

Gearsellers

What it is: Gearsellers lists deals for more than 100 outdoor retailers at up to 70 percent off regular prices.

How it works: Click on the “Deal of the Day” tab to see a list of categories, sports, and websites. Tip: To see deals for specific retailers, jump to the Crazy Deal Sheet page and see a list of daily deals listed alphabetically by store.

Tip: This is a good site for first-time buyers of items like mountain and road bikes, because there are detailed product descriptions to help buyers learn what they’ll get for their money. The products are displayed side by side to compare prices and features, making it easier to make an informed decision.

The Cheap Outdoors

What it is: The Cheap Outdoors lists deals, coupon codes and other bargains available for anything related to outdoor recreation (including a recent deal for a one-year subscription to Field & Stream magazine for $5).

Attention, procrastinators: Don’t miss the list of soon-to-expire coupons that can always be found on the lower right-hand side of the home page.

Tip: Check out the “Contests, Sweeps and Giveaways” section at the bottom of the home page to learn about current outdoor-related opportunities (an outdoor photography contest was recently featured).

CleanSnipe

Track several daily deal sites at once with a visit to CleanSnipe. It lists daily deals for sites such as Steep and Cheap, The Clymb, and Chain Love.

Tip: Get more bang for your buck by joining CleanSnipe’s rewards program, which allows users to shop more than 100 outdoor retailers and get up to 10 percent cash back for their purchases. Here’s how:

  • Register for free from the link on the main page. Either log in through Facebook or enter your name, an email, and a password.
  • Search the retailer list to see cash back percentage offered for each site.
  • Purchases from registered users are tracked through CleanSnipe, and purchase “rewards” accumulate in the user’s account.
  • When users are eligible to cash out a reward (track this by clicking on the user’s account information), money can be sent to the user’s PayPal account.

Tangled up in Gear

What it is: This deal searcher is part of an outdoor blog called Trail Potato, and since the people behind this site are dedicated fans of outdoor recreation, it’s a smart place to find the best deals from places like REI (one of roughly 30 outdoor retailers featured).

How it works: Search for specific items by typing in a keyword in the “Search for Products” bar at the top of the page. Or simply scroll through the day’s hottest deals listed for every retailer. The site also offers coupon codes, so it’s easy to find bargains no matter what type of item is needed.

Tips: This is a good place to learn about lesser-known companies and offbeat items such as packable games for road trips and gear for kids.

Follow the blog to learn about trails and parks for all ages and skill levels.

GearScan

What it is: Use GearScan to glance at deals from one-time deal sites such as Steep and Cheap, Chain Love, and Bonktown. The site also tracks and lists daily deals from retailers like REI, Altrec, and Patagonia.

How it works: Glance at the home page for a current rundown of deals. Zero in on a specific item by using the “Gear Search” box located at the top of each page.

Tips: Let the deals come to you by signing up for their free emails (the signup link can be found on the home page).

Save even more by using their 40 percent off coupon in their Department of Goods catalogue.

Never miss a coupon, deal or freebie again!
