Let’s face it: couponing can get confusing. What are the best stores to coupon at? What if you’re a beginner? Who has the best coupon deals? And if you’re not just starting out with coupons (maybe you’ve been doing this for a hot minute), your questions might be more like: What stores will make price adjustments for coupons? Who allows coupon overages?

Guess what? We have the answers, so take a breath and let’s go through this one point at a time. I got you!

(Make sure to download the free The Krazy Coupon Lady app and set your favorite stores so that you know when the best deals are available.)

What stores double coupons?

coupon inserts in a pile from the sunday newspaper

Very few anymore. This used to be a more common practice back in the early days of the couponing craze, but most stores have done away with it. One exception is Albertsons, who at times (and very selectively), is a store that doubles coupons. It’s up to the discretion of the store manager and usually only for special promotions.

Note: “Doubling” coupons is not the same thing as “stacking” coupons. Doubling refers to stores that allow you to get double the discount on the coupon. So if you have a $0.25 off Colgate coupon, you could actually get $0.50 off using just that one coupon. Stacking is when you use more than one coupon on an item, but they’re different types (one is manufacturer and one is a store coupon, for example). Lots of stores allow stacking. Hardly any allow doubling.

1. CVS Coupon Policy

CVS is one of the best stores to coupon at because you can earn ExtraBucks before they apply the coupon value to your total.

CVS ExtraBucks are basically money you rack up during most transactions. They go toward a future purchase at CVS. Also, CVS counts the money toward those points before you use coupons (as long as you use your ExtraCare card). This means your ExtraBucks total is based on that large total price before your manufacturer coupons knock it down.

CVS coupon policy highlights:

  • You can use one manufacturer coupon and up to three CVS coupons per item — see Ways to Stack Coupons at CVS for more details
  • No coupon limit per transaction
  • Adjusts coupon value if the item is less than coupon
  • Allows “free item” coupons
  • Allows coupons on clearance and sale items

2. Walmart Coupon Policy

The best thing about couponing at Walmart is they allow for coupon overages.

This is a rare but very cool feature. It means if you have a coupon that’s worth more than the price of the item, Walmart will apply the extra to your bill and in some instances give you cash back. (Other stores won’t literally open the till and hand you cash; they’ll just consider the item to be free.) Walmart is also an easy place to get started if you’re new to couponing.

Walmart coupon policy highlights:

  • You can use one coupon per item
  • No coupon limit per transaction
  • Allows for coupon overage
  • Allows “free product” coupons* (not from internet source)
  • Allows coupons on clearance and rollback deals

*A free-product coupon is a rare, high-value coupon that manufacturers sometimes send out to get you to try their product — no purchase necessary. You’ll still be responsible for all applicable sales tax, but you essentially get a completely free item. Not all retailers accept them, so we’ve highlighted those who do on this list. We have a big list of companies that’ll send you free or high-value coupons.

3. Target Coupon Policy

A 10% off Tide laundry detergent on the target circle app, held next to a $2 off manufacture coupon, and a bottle of Tide liquid detergent.

What makes Target one of the best stores to coupon at? The overall coupon deals. There are just so many of them!

Target has over 500 Circle offers to take advantage of — some are manufacturer, some are store coupons. This is a great place for all couponers, but especially for beginners. You can save money with just one manufacturer coupon per item, or you can experiment with coupon stacking.

Target coupon policy highlights:

  • Allows one manufacturer coupon, one Target coupon, and one Circle offer — such as “20% off One A Day Vitamins” — per item
  • Limit of four identical coupons per household, per day
  • Adjusts coupon value if item is less than coupon
  • Allows “free product” coupons (not from internet sources)
  • Allows coupons on clearance and sale items

4. Kroger Coupon Policy

The best thing about couponing at Kroger is being able to use manufacturer coupons during Kroger Grocery Pickup.

There are so many ways to get sweet deals at Kroger, but one of our favorites is that you can use manufacturer coupons from your car. Not sure how that works? We’ll tell you everything you need to know about Kroger grocery pickup (formerly Clicklist).

Kroger coupon policy highlights:

  • Allows one manufacturer and store coupon per item, although your mileage may vary with stacking at Kroger. Kroger paper store coupons are only valid on Kroger store brands and are pretty rare; look for them in monthly mailers. Some stores allow you to stack the 5x digital Kroger coupons with manufacturer coupons while other stores don’t.
  • Limit of three identical coupons per household, per day …
  • However, in some instances, internet coupons may be limited to two coupons per customer in a single day.
  • Adjusts item value if item is less than coupon
  • Allows “free item” coupons
  • Allows coupons on clearance and sale items
  • Access to digital coupons when you download the Kroger app — no coupon clipping necessary

5. Walgreens Coupon Policy

The best thing about couponing at Walgreens is that coupons are allowed on clearance and sale items.

Technically, Walgreens reserves the right to limit excessive coupon use, but they leave the decision up to individual store managers. Basically, don’t clear out their shelves or abuse their policy and you’ll be fine.

Walgreens coupon policy highlights:

  • Allows one manufacturer coupon and one Walgreens coupon per item (Walgreens considers a Register Reward a manufacturer coupon)
  • A filler item can be used to redeem a Register Reward with a manufacturer coupon
  • Limit of four identical coupons per household, per day
  • Will NOT accept coupons that are more than the value of the item — no exceptions
  • Allows “free item” coupons (not from internet sources)
  • Allows coupons on clearance and sale items

6. Publix Coupon Policy

Publix is one of the best stores to coupon at because they accept competitor coupons and allow overage.

Publix also runs sweet BOGO (Buy One, Get One) sales every week. But my favorite thing about Publix is that you can stack a manufacturer coupon with a competitor coupon for some seriously great savings. If your coupon value is over the product amount, you’ll also get the overage in the form of a Publix gift card.

Publix coupon policy highlights:

  • Allows one manufacturer coupon and one Publix coupon OR competitor coupon per item
  • Limit of eight of the same coupons per day, per household
  • Allows overage on coupon value — get a Publix gift card if your coupon is more than the product cost
  • Allows “free item” coupons
  • Allows coupons on clearance and sale items
  • Accepts competitors’ coupons

7. Dollar Tree Coupon Policy

The best thing about couponing at Dollar Tree is that it’s easy to score freebies.

Dollar Tree can be a stickler about their policy, but if you pay careful attention to sizes and details (aka coupon fine print), you’ll never have a problem. Follow our Dollar Tree Deals page to see all of the freebies you can score with coupons.

Dollar Tree coupon policy highlights:

  • Allows one manufacturer coupon per item
  • Limit of four identical coupons per household, per day
  • Limit of two internet coupons per customer, per day
  • Adjusts coupon value if item is less than coupon
  • Allows coupons on clearance and sale items

8. Rite Aid Coupon Policy

The best thing about couponing at Rite Aid is you can use up to three coupons on one item.

We love to score deals at Rite Aid by stacking coupons with sales and earning BonusCash (money you can spend on a later transaction at Rite Aid).

Rite Aid coupon policy highlights:

  • Allows one manufacturer coupon, one Rite Aid Valuable coupon (UPC that begins with “48”), and one Rite Aid Manufacturer coupon (UPC that begins with “49”) per item
  • Limit of four identical coupons per household, per day
  • Allows coupons on clearance and sale items
  • Use BonusCash beginning at 6 a.m. on the day after you receive it. BonusCash will expire 60 days from the date it was first issued

Honorable Mentions:

These four retailers didn’t make the “best stores to coupon at” cut because they don’t accept manufacturer coupons in the traditional way. But you can still get great savings with in-house coupons and promo codes.

1. Costco Coupon Book & Policy

You can’t use manufacturer coupons at Costco, but their monthly deals work like automatic coupons. Look for their warehouse booklet in the mail or at customer service. You have to be a member to get the deals, though, so make sure you’re actually buying enough to make the membership worth it.

Check out the latest Costco deals.

2. Amazon Coupon Policy

Amazon doesn’t accept manufacturer coupons either. But they do have a variety of promotional codes and digital Amazon coupons that you can apply to certain products to save money.

3. Sam’s Club Coupon Policy

Like Costco, Sam’s Club doesn’t accept manufacturer coupons, but their monthly deals work like automatic coupons. You need to be a member to access the deals, but wait for Sam’s Club to run a promo where you pay the $45 membership fee and get a $20 gift card to spend in the store.

Here are all of the Sam’s Club deals.

4. Aldi Coupon Policy

Aldi doesn’t accept manufacturer coupons because 90% of the items sold are Aldi’s exclusive brand. Many of those items cost 50% less than typical prices at other grocery stores. Look for items marked “Aldi Finds” for some of the best discounts in stores.

Aldi will offer regional promotions or coupons tied to an event, such as an Aldi store Grand Opening. Keep an eye on your mailbox or in stores for special promotions near you.Check out these Aldi deals.
