American TV audiences love ABC’s hit show Modern Family almost as much as Jay loves the dog, Stella.

It has also been easy to fall in love with the show’s effortless design. With inviting charm and classic style, characters Claire and Phil Dunphy’s great room could fit into even very tight budgets. Here’s’s Knockout Knockoff version of the room:

A neutral, light brown rug provides the room with a warm charm. The 5′ x 8′ South Beach Beige Medallions rug works indoors or outdoors (easy clean up) and is on sale right now at for just $189.00.

The neutral sofa is a homeowner’s delight with a basic pallet that can fit comfortably in anyone’s living room. The custom, yet affordable Brennan Sofa from JC Penney is just $650. No shipping charges for store pickup.

Accent pillows are a great way to add pops of color to a room without a huge investment in fabrics. Kohl’s offers these Khary Leaf decorative pillows on sale right now for $13.99 (regular price is $29.99). Use some Kohl’s cash for an even better deal.

The striped love seat adds flair to an otherwise conservative living room. This Ennis Shoreline Striped Blue love seat from  is only $459.99, and shipping is Overtsock’s incredible $2.95!

A basic coffee table with curved accents anchor the room, and this simple but classic Whitman Square coffee table from is on sale for $116.00 and fits in beautifully.

A white bookcase adds extra storage and ties the room together. offers the Altra bookcase on sale right now for just $139.00.

Yellow is a hot color right now, and this bright 12″ x 12″ lacquer yellow tray from West Elm adds some spice and is on sale for $14.99.

This Bronze Floor Lamp is a dead ringer for the Dunphy’s version in Modern Family, and you don’t have to go very far to find it. It is a steal at only $69.99 at Target, and if you decide to buy online, shipping is free with a red card or when you ship to a Target store.

A red throw adds some pop and warmth to the beige couch, and at $10.00 from Walmart the price can’t be beat!

The cute storage basket next to the couch adds coziness and needed storage. This version is just $12.99 from Target.

Total room cost: $1,674.99

Just saw a feature in the latest HGTV magazine on the kitchen and liing room of this very same set! Of course, the options shown here are much more affordable, but just as spot-on. Great job; keep ‘em coming!

I love all the choices, but I would have gone with a sofa from IKEA. The EKTORP sofa with a Beige cover is only $499.

A sofa from Ikea would be nice, but not everyone has an Ikea close to them and shipping is $349!

We lost our entire home to a house fire in May. After living in a 30 ft camper, with 5 children, for two months, I’m finally getting to decorate our new nest. I’ve used the Knockout Knockoffs ideas as inspiration, and we are enjoying our stylish, family friendly home with the peace of mind of having been able to sock most of our insurance money away in savings. And, a tip for the future: an ugly 50′s console stereo cabinet makes an awesome DIY bar. Just remove the “guts”, paint, for a retro look that echos “Mad Men”. I did mine for under $30, including the cabinet!
