    10 DAYS TO BECOME A KCL {DAY 1}

    Okay- I am so excited about this series…

    10 Days to Become a Krazy Coupon Lady (KCL).
    That’s right, it is time to commit ladies (and gentlemen). It may not be today, but I’m going to have all of you- nervous, overwhelmed and dedicated fence-sitters converted to the KCL way in 10 days (or less)…The First Step to becoming a KCL is to CHANGE THE WAY YOU SHOP!!!
    Throw everything you know about grocery shopping out the window.

    -No more running to the store at 3:00pm everyday to buy what you need for dinner.
    -No more making one list every week to buy the five meals you are going to cook- regardless of the price.
    -No more HUGE monthly shopping trip where you spend who knows how much…
    -No more running to the store because you are out of toothpaste and Q-tips

    Say Goodbye to those days!
    And Say Hello to the KCL WAY!
    Here’s what you need to know…

    - You will be going to the store a lot, and you will most likely have a very intimate relationship with certain stores and the checkers who are employed there.
    - You will have a Year Supply of Toothpaste, Soap, Razors, and Lysol Wipes (among other things) before you can blink!!
    - Before you know it you will be saving between 50-90% at the grocery store!
    - It’s all about shopping with coupons while a product is on sale- and STOCKING UP so you don’t have to buy something when it’s not cheap or free.

    So, are you feeling it? Are you ready to commit? Check back in a couple days for the next topic… “Where to Find all the Coupons you need to Cash in!!”

    10 Days to Become a KCL {Day 3}

    {How.. and When… to Use Coupons to get a Krazy Good Deal}

    So- I question that I get ALL THE TIME goes something like this:

    “I always try to clip the coupons from my (one) Sunday paper- and then I go do my regular shopping and it’s cheaper to just buy the generic of the coupon that I have!”

    I used to think the same thing. Every other week, I would remember to clip my coupons and then I would take them to the store, hunt down the right product and size, and then do some math in my head and decide it’s cheaper to buy the Walmart Generic. So I would grab the Walmart Generic and Toss the Coupon…

    So sad.

    The Big “Secret” is MATCHING COUPONS WITH AWESOME SALES and PROMOS!
    For example- If I go to Walmart to use my $1 off 5 Campbell’s Cream of Chicken Coupons, it will end up being cheaper to just buy generic.
    BUT, if you use the coupon when they are at a rock bottom price- or if you match it with a promotion Albertson’s is having- Viola! Cheap Soup!

    Another “Secret” is DOUBLE DAYS!
    K-Mart Doubles about once a month, and Albertson’s puts out double coupons.
    When a store doubles a coupons, they will match the price of your coupon- for example if you have a coupon for $1 off- they will take another $1 off!
    Restrictions usually apply, as to how many coupons you can double, ect.

    Oh- and Don’t forget my favorite Couponing “Secret”- Stacking!!

    Stacking simply means using 1 Manufacturer Coupon and 1 Store Coupon on 1 Item!!
    Target, Albertson’s and Walgreens all have store coupons and allow them to be stacked with a manufacturer coupon!

    So, this is where KCL comes in… Use and abuse us to find all the deals and where they are. Most stores operate on a Sunday-Saturday Sale Cycle… So we will post a big match up for each store at the beginning of the week. Albertson’s is on a Wednesday-Tuesday Sale Cycle and we usually have a match up preview on Tuesday.

    Also, it will take a little while for you newbies to figure out when something is a good deal. When I first started couponing, I found toothpaste for $1/tube and I thought I scored- so of course, I bought like 20 of them. Then as time went on, I realized that you can get free toothpaste all the time! So, be willing to overpay ($1 for toothpaste is really cheap for all our non-couponing friends- so don’t feel too bad!)- and if it helps, start making a list like this one!

    Are you feeling ready to rock the grocery stores yet?
    Check back tomorrow for Day 4- The Coupon Dictionary…

    10 Days to Become a KCL {Day 4}

    {The Coupon Dictionary}
    “Couponer’s Lingo” is enough to make any Coupon Virgin’s head spin… Hopefully this will help!

    Ever seen something like this on KCL-B1G1 w/$2/1 from (3/15RP) & earn RR, then submit MIR (YMMV)

    It’s almost laughable how ridiculous the code of couponers is!!
    Once you figure it out though, it’s a piece of cake!

    $/# – This means that you get $ off for every # you buy. Example: $1/2 would mean that you get $1 off every 2 that you buy. You will see this a lot on KCL when we are breaking down Store Ad’s.

    B1G1 = Buy One Get One Free (B1G2 is Buy One Get Two Free etc.)

    Blinkie = A coupon that prints out at a machine in the store. They are located by the product associated with that particular coupon.

    BOGO = Buy One Get One Free

    CAT = Catalina. A coupon that prints out at the register that is either $$ off your next purchase or $$ off a certain product They are usually manufacturer coupons, not store coupons. Note: These are sometimes delayed in printing so wait a minute before walking away from the register. If you think you were supposed to get one and didn’t, talk to the cashier/manager and explain…

    Coupon Insert – These are “packets” of coupons found in Sunday papers and also sometimes in the ads mailed to you during the week. The companies that put them out include Smart Source (SS or S), Red Plum (RP) and Proctor & Gamble (PG) They are also referred to as just inserts.

    Double Coupons = This is the term used when stores will double a coupon’s value. Some stores do this every coupon months, some never do it, and in some regions stores will pick a day a week to double. In Idaho, Albertson’s and Kmart are the stores that will double occasionally. Some stores may also set a maximum value limit. Example, no coupons over $2 and only 10 per transaction/day.

    EXP = Expires or Expiration Date

    FAR = Free After Rebate

    Internet Printable = A coupon that can be printed online.

    IP = Internet Printable Coupon

    IVC = Instant Value Coupon. These are found at Walgreen s in their weekly ads.

    MIR= Mail in Rebate

    MFR = Manufacturer

    MQ = Manufacturer Coupon

    OOP = Out-of-Pocket. This is the amount of money that you pay for with cash- so after instant coupons- but before Catalina’s received and Mail in Rebates.

    OYNO = On Your Next Order. Often, Albertson’s will run a promo where you spend $25 (or some amount) and then you get a Catalina for $10 Off On Your Next Order.

    Peelie = Coupons found on products in the store. Often, there are good on a range of products, not just what it is stuck to.

    Q = Coupon

    Raincheck = A slip you can ask for in the store when an item’s on sale and out-of-stock.

    Register Rewards or RR = Exclusive to Walgreen’s. They work like cash on your next order.

    Rolling Catalinas – This means that you can use a Catalina as payment on another transaction of equal merchandise and another Catalina will still print. Example, if you buy 4 “Kraft Cheese Bricks,” a $5 Catalina will print. If you then buy another 4 Kraft Cheese Bricks you can use the previous Catalina you received as payment towards the order and another $5 Catalina will print.

    Stacking Coupons = This is the term used when stores will let you use their own in store coupons along with a manufacturer’s coupon for the same item. Example: Most Albertson’s will let you do this.

    Tear Pad = A pad of coupons found hanging from a store shelf or display

    WAGS = Abbreviation for Walgreen’s

    WYB = When You Buy

    YMMV= Your Mileage May Vary

    10 Days to Become a KCL {Day 5}

    Okay Ladies… We are half way there! Are all you coupon virgins feeling inspired? Have you signed up for a newspaper subscription? Only a few more days before we will need a full on commitment!

    {Today is the Day To Get Organized!!!}
    At KCL, the only method of organization that we endorse with our stamp of approval is
    THE BINDER METHOD!

    While we disagree with how to put our coupons in a binder, Joanie and I both use a Binder.

    Heather’s Method:

    -I like to call it the “Less Time Up Front, More Time Getting Ready to Shop” Way
    -I really really hate getting my coupons ready every Sunday.. (or Saturday- don’t judge), so to make that process quicker, I organize by date. I don’t clip any of my coupons until I use them. I have heard reports that the average krazy couponer will only use 50% (or less) of their coupons, so I am all about not clipping coupons I am just going to toss. Call me Lazy if you want, I call me Efficient.
    - I use sheet protectors to put each insert page into it’s own page- for easy access.
    - I also print the Coupon List from Pinching Your Pennies (which gives me an alphabetical list of all the coupons that are out for Idaho- they also have other states)- so that if I run into a clearanced item- I can find what week the coupon is from and flip right to it
    - Another tip if you are going to try out my method, is to write the date (that the coupon came out) on each set- so that if it comes out of the sheet protector you can find it’s home again.

    Joanie’s Method:

    -I like to call her’s the “Super Organized, Cute, TIME CONSUMING” Way
    -Joanie organizes by Category
    -Joanie has way less prep work to actually go to the store, and when she finds a clearanced item in the store, it takes her 20 seconds to flip to her Category and find the coupon she needs.
    -BUT, long after I have tucked my binder into bed, she is still clipping all of her coupons, finding their category, and tucking them into their spot.
    - Joanie uses Baseball Card Holders (can be found at Walmart – she spotted them at the Glenwood Store)

    for $5.77 for 35 pages.
    -Our reader, Amber adds, “Target also has baseball card holders. They’re $4.99 for 30. They’re up front in the aisle that has the baseball cards. They are not with the other sheet protectors.”
    - Joanie has made super cute printable categories in a pdf file- so if you are more inclined to organize by category, you can see her categories and print some for yourself. I’ll warn you though- it’s over 30 pages!

    While we disagree about the category/date method- we both start our organizing for the week the same. See the pictures below… as we walk you through the process.
    1. Tear the inserts apart, careful not to ruin barcodes
    2. We get multiple copies of each insert, so we lay the entire insert out on the table, Soon we have 10 copies of the 1st page in a pile, 10 of the 2nd page in a pile, ect.
    3. Next, we staple all 10 of the 1st page together, and on down the pages…
    4. Then, I write the date on each stapled set And Joanie gets to clippin’

    10 Days To Become a KCL {Day 6}

    {Tips for Making Checkout a Breeze}

    Get Organized Before you Leave the House.
    First, I make a list of the things I want to buy.
    If it is a promo at Albertson’s where I will be doing a few transactions,
    I make my list according to transaction.
    I also clip all my coupons before I leave the house,
    and put them in a separate envelope.

    Choose wisely what time of the day you go.
    I have found that early in the morning or afternoon, or late at night is best for me.
    You and your checker will be less stressed out if there is not a line behind you.

    I always ask my checker if they want all the coupons at the end, or as we go.
    It varies on the store and checker.

    If they want them all at the end, I usually don’t hand them the whole stack.
    I will give them one set, tell them what it is for and how many I have
    (this helps, because the less reading and counting they have to do, the happier they are)

    Do not be afraid to ask for a member of management to come clarify something for you. Often, you know more about the store coupon policy then the checkers,
    so don’t be afraid to nicely ask for a manager to explain something to you.
    Many times, I have had them call over a manager, and it ends with the checker saying
    “Huh, I never knew that!”

    I have said this before but it’s worth repeating...
    PRINT THE STORE COUPON POLICY AND KEEP IT WITH YOU.

    This has saved me so many times. I have it on the outside of my binder and if I need to,
    I will reference it at the check out.
    I always think I should make copies to give to the checkers
    because clearly some of them have never read it!!

    Lastly- Don’t be Afraid to Profile!
    I always scan all the checkers and decide who is going to be best.
    I know I get made fun of (Rick) but I have had the best luck with younger male checkers.
    Once you become a regular at a store, you will know who to go to…
    And they will probably know you by name (and have your preferred card phone # memorized!!)

    10 Days to Become a KCL {Day 7}

    {Get Your Stockpile On}
    First I have to add a Disclaimer.
    Some of you may be against a Stockpile- which is totally fine.
    I have been couponing for awhile now- so remember I am not advocating that you go Clear a Shelf to get a stockpile overnight, But for me it’s an essential part of couponing. So without further ado:

    I have said it before and I will say it again! I would not coupon if I couldn’t get multiple items. This is why we tell you to get 4-6 copies of the paper. If you are going to go through all the trouble of this- you should be building a stockpile.

    By Stockpiling while something is at a ROCK BOTTOM price, you won’t have to pay full price when you have to have it. This will eliminate running to the store when you are out of something, and will cut out those impulse buys.

    As you coupon longer- you will have an idea of when you should stock up- and when you should buy only a few to get you by until a better sale. Here’s an example I have shared a few times: When I first started couponing I found toothpaste for $1/tube. I thought I was going to die! I was shocked that I had found such a screamin’ deal! So- of course I bought like 20. Little did I know that toothpaste is under $.50 ALL THE TIME! There will be a learning curve as you figure out a price list. I keep mine in my head, others have a written list of their Top 20 Items and the Rock Bottom Price.

    Here is an Example of my List (these are my stock up prices):
    Cheese $3.99/2lb
    Ground Beef $1.75/lb
    Chicken $1.67/lb
    Milk $1.89/gallon (whole)- I freeze my milk if it’s lower than this and I want to really stock up
    Cleaning Supplies (lysol wipes, bathroom and kitchen cleaners, ect) $.50 or less
    Toothpaste/brushes FREE
    Cereal $.75 per box or less
    Brownie and Cookie Mixes Less than $.50 or less
    Dish Soap $.25
    Cheap Toilet Paper FREE
    Charmin Toilet Paper for my picky husband $6 for the Double Roll 9 packs
    Kotex Pads FREE
    Johnson Buddies FREE
    Granola Bars $.50
    Chinet Paper Plates $.50
    Bisquick $.90
    Fruit Snacks $.50 or less
    Good Deodorant $.5o
    Cheap Deodorant FREE
    Men’s Body Wash $.50 or less

    I have heard people say that the Sales and Coupons are on a 3-4 Month Cycle. I keep this in mind when stockpiling things that have an expiration date. But on things that won’t expire- I get more than a 4 month supply. For example I have a year (plus) supply of cleaning supplies, toiletries, paper plates.

    Also, It’s Best to Not be Brand Specific. Your couponing efforts will be much more successful if you can buy whatever brand is cheapest. My husband refuses to use anything but the nicest thickest softest Charmin Toilet Paper- so when I find that Cheap- I go KRAZY because I don’t see it at a rock bottom price very often. Also, if there is something you are loyal to, consider buying extra coupons on ebay so you can stock up!

    One last thing I wanted to touch one- was making a list of your Top 20 (or however many) Meals and their Ingredients- And then working on a stockpile of those ingredients. I will go into depth about this- when I talk all about cooking as a kcl.

    10 Days to Become a KCL {Day 8}

    {Rain Checks}

    One of the better kept secrets in Krazy Couponing is Rain Checks. How many of you are totally utilizing rain checks? Well, if you haven’t yet, it is time to step it up to the Next Level of Kraziness.
    First off- For any of you coupon virgins, A Rain Check is a slip of paper that you can get from a store when they are out of an item that is on sale. The slip of paper allows you to come back when they have the item back in stock to purchase it for the sale price.

    Sweet, right?!? Very.

    Rain Check policies will vary by store so make sure you check each stores rules before using them. Some stores have an expiration date on the rain check and others (like Walgreen’s) don’t. Also, some stores will put a maximum quantity amount per item.

    Points to Consider:

    • Make sure that the coupons you are using on the item you need a rain check for won’t expire before the store gets the items back in stock. No use going through the trouble- just to have expired coupons!
    • Most of the time don’t bother getting a Raincheck for something that is also included in a Promotion (Like spend $10 Save $4 Instantly). The Rain check is valid for the Sales price only. They can not honor a promo that has ended with a rain check. The exception to this rule is if the Promotion (such as a Catalina promo) extends past the Sale Date. Am I making sense? Often Catalina or Register Rewards Offers run for a few weeks, so if you think this applies check the Catalina expiration date and get that rain check!
    • You can not get a Rain Check on Clearance Prices
    • When redeeming your rain check be courteous of the checker and let them know you will be using one- BEFORE they start to ring you up. They are going to need to manually enter in the amount- and they will love you if they don’t have to go back through at the end of the transaction to void and re-enter the correct amount.
    How to use Rainchecks the Krazy Way:
    If you find something that you are totally brand loyal to, or something that will be great in your stockpile and won’t expire and it is out of stock… Take the opportunity to get a Rain Check for the maximum quantity allowed. Then hurry your little self over to Ebay and buy all the coupons you need- then go back when they are in stock (or consider special ordering) and when you have your additional coupons.
    Viola! Easy as Pie.

    10 Days to Become a KCL {Day 9}

    {Finding Balance}

    When I first started couponing I was so excited about all the money I was saving- that I thought I needed to cash in on EVERY deal at EVERY store! I was shopping at Albertson’s, Walgreen’s, Walmart, Target and occasionally K-Mart. And this was on a weekly basis. Obviously, it didn’t take long before I was completely burnt out. Not to mention my kids would spot the Big Red Bullseye and burst into tears. (Okay, I may be exaggerating- but you get the point)

    I quickly had to choose just one store that I would focus my efforts on. My choice was Albertson’s- because it’s the only store with in about 25 minutes of my house. (If I were closer I would probably focus on 2 stores.) I still occasionally go to Target and Walmart- but it is not a weekly occurrence anymore.

    Also, it’s best for you coupon virgins to learn 1 store at a time. You will get WAY too overwhelmed if you are trying to learn every policy all at once. I think the easiest way to choose a store is to just pick what is closest to your house. You will be wanting to go often, so it makes sense to not have to travel very far.

    Another key to finding balance in couponing- is to remind yourself that this most likely isn’t the last time you will see products at this price! When I was a newby- I didn’t realize that the prices I was seeing were more than Once In a Lifetime Sales!! The industry standard for coupon and sale cycles is 3-4 months- but on a lot of products, like Kraft and General Mills, it’s more often than that!

    {Making KCL a Way of Life}

    You are probably sick of our mantra, Buy Before You Need while it’s CHEAP or FREE, and avoid having to buy it at FULL PRICE when you absolutely need it!!

    At the Grocery Store this line of thinking works very well. We are all on our way to creating a stock pile that will support our families (and friends, and neighbors, and subdivisions and towns!!:) should we ever need to cut back on our spending. If you have been doing this long, you are spending LESS at the grocery store and accumulating MORE! It’s a wonderful thing.

    So- if you are a KCL at the grocery store, it’s time to start thinking about taking this a step further, and Making KCL a Way of Life…

    Create a Stock Pile of Kids Clothes-
    I like to have a basic supply of clothes for my kids in 2 sizes bigger than they are in. My son is in 4T currently, and I am working on buying enough 5T and 6T clothes to get us by, just in case we aren’t able to buy them in the future. I shop Second Hand, Garage Sales and Clearance Sections of my favorite stores. My new favorite way to accumulate kids clothes for cheap is to stack an Old Navy Sale or Clearance item with an Old Navy Weekly Coupon.

    Check Out Books and Movies from the Library-
    This is the best way to find the movies and books you want, FOR FREE. Plus- I am always very motivated to get them read, since they have a due date! The free Redbox codes are also our favorite way to get the most current movies. Since they started doing this, we have canceled our Netflix subscription!

    Buy Toys for Birthdays When you Find them on Clearance-
    Every year after Christmas Target clearances most of their toy section. I take this opportunity to stock up on my kids birthday presents, friends and cousins birthdays and so forth. I am also a fan of garage sales for this… I just bought my son a bike for $10 for his birthday and spent double that on a last minute cake at Albies… (don’t even get me started!)

    Stock Up on Office and School Supplies while they are on Clearance-
    I love Target for this as well. After school starts they clearance all their supplies, and I stock up on what I will need for the year for our office, for craft supplies, and for everything my kids may need throughout the year.
