For all you Coupon Virgins who are wondering how to shop at Safeway with coupons, here is the video for you! Below is the written version if you’d rather read our “instructions”  Happy Couponing!

Safeway Basics

  • Safeway is a great place to coupon shop. It fits the bill of what we watch for when choosing a store: high normal prices but lots of sales, Catalinas, store coupons, and promos.
  • Safeway affiliate stores include Carrs, Dominick’s, Genuardi’s, Pavilions, Randalls, Tom Thumb, and Vons. Most of the deals we post will be the same throughout these stores (some regional differences might be for produce, dairy, or meat prices)

Acceptable Coupons

  • As per their Coupon Policy, Safeway accepts manufacturer and printable coupons
    • Managers retain the right to deny any coupon they believe might be fraudulent, distorted, blurry, or altered
  • eCoupons
    • Depending on your region, your store may participate in the Just4U program (mainly Hawaii and Northern California, with new regions being expanded)
      • If your store is a Just4U (it will say on the weekly ad), you will need to register for a card and download eCoupons to that card
      • Just4U stores do NOT accept eCoupons downloaded from Cellfire, Shortcuts, or P&GeSaver
    • If your store is NOT participating in Just4U, you may download eCoupons from Safeway.com. UPDATE: All Safeway locations no longer accept eCoupons downloaded from Cellfire or Shortcuts.
      • You may only add one of the same eCoupon per card
      • You cannot stack a paper coupon & an eCoupon on the same item
  • Store Coupons
    • In-ad coupons are called “Super Coupons”
    • Can be stacked with manufacturer coupons
    • Will often have limits (e.g. Limit 2, Limit 4)
      • Limits, as stated in the ads, “Are per household, per day”
    • Must spend at least $10 to use Store Coupons
      • $10 is BEFORE manufacturer coupons but AFTER store coupons & card discounts
  • Coupon Booklets
    • Located throughout the store at various times in the year
    • Contain both manufacturer and store coupons
  • Catalinas
    • Coupons that print at checkout separate from your receipt, good on your next purchase.
    • You can use manufacturer coupons on your purchase and still receive your Catalina

Buy One Get One Free Sales

  • Safeway does not allow a coupon to be applied to any free item received in an offer.
    • This means that you cannot use 2 value-off coupons on a BOGO store promo
    • However, most stores will allow you to use 1 BOGO coupon along with a BOGO store promo, making both items free

1. We will redeem coupons only for the specific items included in our customer’s purchase transaction. This tells us two good things:  First, Safeway will accept coupons, even those for a “free” product.  Second, if the coupon exceeds the value of the item, the coupon will be adjusted down to the value of the item.

2. Paper coupons must be presented at the time of the purchase transaction. We will accept only coupons issued by Safeway or the manufacturer of the relevant product. We will not accept photocopies of coupons.
3. Coupons are subject to advertised offer limitations and all other limitations and restrictions on the applicable coupon or product.
4. Coupons may not be applied against any free item received in any offer.

5. Coupons have no cash value.
6. Safeway will not accept manufacturer coupons (including, but not limited to, coupons issued through a Catalina or other in-store coupon dispenser) that display another retailer’s logo or name unless such coupon is for a specific item with the same product identifiers as the product included in our customer’s purchase transaction.

This means we can’t use other store’s Catalina checkout-coupons (such as Walgreens Register Rewards).  We CAN continue to use manufacturer coupon for a specific product that have a store logo (such as those printed from Target.com).

7. We will not accept coupons unless they have an expiration date.
8. We will not accept coupons that, in the determination of Safeway personnel, appear distorted or blurry or are altered in any way.
9. Sales taxes will be applied in accordance with the law of the applicable state, regardless of any coupon or other discount that may apply to the purchase transaction.
10. All applicable bottle and packaging deposits on the purchased and free items must be paid by the customer.
11. Safeway reserves the right to refuse any coupons at its discretion.
12. Purchase reward thresholds (if any) will be calculated based upon customer’s final price (after deducting Club Card savings and all other discounts and savings) before deductions for any manufacturer coupons. As an example (and not as an offer), if a $10 minimum purchase is required for a customer reward, a customer’s order at full retail would be $12, a Club Card discount of $1.75 applies, and a manufacturer’s coupon of $1 applies, the customer would be given credit for a $10.25 purchase, and would be eligible for the reward (assuming compliance with all other requirements) even though the customer’s cash payment would be only $9.25. The manufacturer’s coupon would not be deducted from the total for purposes of determining reward eligibility. Purchase reward thresholds (if any) will be calculated based upon customer’s final price (after deducting Club Card savings, and all other discounts)

This is just saying that minimum purchase requirements are to be calculated AFTER club card savings but BEFORE manufacturer coupons.  This is a good thing!

13. References to a threshold purchase requirement will exclude purchases of: Beer, Wine, Spirits, Tobacco Products, Fuel, All Fluid Items in the Refrigerated Dairy Section (including Fluid Dairy and Dairy Substitutes), Prescription Items and Co-payments, Bus/Commuter Passes, Fishing/Hunting Licenses and Tags, Postage Stamps, Money Orders, Money Transfers, Ski Tickets, Amusement Park Tickets, Event Tickets, Lottery Tickets, Phone Cards, Gift Cards, and Gift Certificates; also excluded are: Bottle Deposits, Redemption Values, and Sales Taxes.

Internet Printed Coupons:

14. We gladly accept internet printed coupons. The same manufacturer and store coupon rules above apply to all internet printed coupons.
15. Internet printed coupons must be capable of scanning at checkout.
16. Internet printed coupons must have serial numbers and must follow an industry-standard format.
17. Manufacturer internet printed coupons must clearly indicate that they are a manufacturer coupon and must have a valid manufacture address on the printed coupon.
18. We will not accept “free product” internet printed manufacturer coupons.

Load to Card Club Coupons:

19. Internet and digital coupons that have been electronically loaded to a Safeway Club Card are automatically redeemed at the time of purchase after the club card number has been entered. All other coupon policies above apply to electronic coupons that are loaded to a club card.

Doubling of Coupons:

20. Check with your local store regarding ‘double coupon’ advertised promotions where customers will receive double the coupon face value off the regular or club card price up to the advertised limit. Not all locations offer double coupon promotions. Limitations and restrictions for double coupon promotions may change at any time. Changes will be posted in store only.

Coupon Stacking:

21. Safeway does not allow a customer to redeem two or more manufacturer coupons against the same item in a single transaction.
22. Coupon stacking policies for manufacturer coupons apply to paper and electronic coupons that have been loaded to a club card.
23. If a customer presents two coupons for the same item in a single transaction, Safeway will give the highest discount for that item, subject to the terms of the applicable offer and/or coupon.

This all means that we cannot stack an eCoupon with a paper coupon.  If we do so inadvertently, the coupon with the greater discount will be applied toward our savings.

Rainchecks:

24. Rainchecks expire ninety (90) days from the date issued and will not be accepted at any Safeway store after that time.
25. We reserve the right to limit Raincheck quantities based on product availability and advertised limits.
26. Rainchecks can be issued for up to six (6) items unless otherwise stated in the applicable advertisement.
27. Rainchecks can be issued for all items, excluding Beer, Wine, Spirits, Tobacco Products, Fuel, All Fluid Items in the Refrigerated Dairy Section (including Fluid Dairy and Dairy Substitutes), which exclusions may vary from state to state.
28. Rainchecks can be offered for store super coupon items unless otherwise specified on the coupon. Rainchecks will not be provided for items advertised as “clearance”, “while supplies last,” limited quantities,” or other designation indicating a limited supply.
We may change these rules at any time. All coupon redemption terms are subject to the terms of the rules in effect at time of redemption. Rule changes may become effective without advance notice or advertisement. The current rules will be posted at the customer service area in each store. You are also advised to periodically check our website for any changes to these rules.

Safeway 101: How the Krazy Coupon Lady shops Safeway

Safeway is a great place to coupon shop. It fits the standard traits we watch for when choosing a store: high regular prices, but lots of sales, gimmicks and promos. When we play the games & promos and stack our coupons with those gimmicks, we can achieve great savings at Safeway and any of the Safeway affiliate stores.

Part 1: Coupons accepted at Safeway: 

Manufacturer issued coupons: These coupons are found in the free standing inserts in your Sunday paper: Smart Source, Red Plum and Procter & Gamble, and also magazines.

Printable Coupons: Safeway accepts valid printable coupons that scan at the register.

eCoupons: Load these coupons directly onto your club card. When you swipe the card or present your phone number to the cashier, you will automatically receive the savings & you can see them on your receipt. eCoupons are only good on one product and cannot be combined with other manufacturer coupons.  Load eCoupons to your card at Safeway.com.

Catalina Coupons: Gray Catalina machines located at registers dispense long, receipt-like coupons. Catalina coupons may be store or manufacturer coupons. They can be for a dollar-amount off your next transaction or a specific product coupon.

Store Coupons: Safeway calls them ‘Super Coupons’. Find them in the weekly store ad or load them onto your Safeway Club Card. Safeway allows stacking one store and one manufacturer coupon per item. Super Coupons require a minimum purchase of $10.00. The minimum purchase is your sub-total before using any coupons (if your subtotal is $10.49 and then you redeem $10.00 worth of coupons, you may still use Super Coupons). Store coupons often have limits and these are per household, per day.

Part 2: What makes Safeway Krazy!

Promotions: Safeway runs Catalina promos like: Spend $25 on participating products, save $10 on your next shopping order. When we combine a deal like this with coupons, we can yield high savings of over 70%. Check the small print of the corresponding ad to see if the minimum purchase requirement is before or after coupons and discounts.

Safeway Club Card: To take advantage of sale prices, eCoupons, fuel discounts, and locations that participate in Just4U, you will need a Club Card. Download a copy of the club card application here, fill it out and return it to your store.

Double Coupons: Some Safeway stores double coupons, usually $0.50 and under. This is subject to regional competition. Watch your weekly ads or inquire at your store as to whether your store doubles.

Let’s Shop with The Krazy Coupon Lady: Week of 2/5

Last week was a KRAZY week for free vitamins and supplements.  This week is the same!  If you usually take vitamins and supplements,  you really need to stock up now!  I have never really taken vitamins or supplements – but I think I am going to start since I can get them for free.  It just might give me more energy to do more couponing! :)

Coupons and sales are certainly helping each of us keep our New Year’s Resolutions of eating healthier and maybe even losing a little weight!  I really enjoy the Nature Valley Granola Bars and really don’t mind grabbing one of them instead of a candy bar.  My personal favorite is the Oats ’N Honey bars.  They almost taste like an oatmeal cookie!  Starting tomorrow, 1/18, we can snag this great deal on these tasty and nutritious snacks!

Let’s Shop with The Krazy Coupon Lady: Week of 1/15

 I thought I’d share with you a little about how I do my shopping for this post.  On Sundays,  I do my organizing for my trip.  I clip or print any additional coupons that I need and put them in envelopes for each store with my list written on them.  This saves me the time of flipping through my binder and just works for me!  Monday is my shopping day!  I hit CVS, Walgreens, or Rite Aid stores to find my deals.  This usually takes several hours.  If a good deal pops up on Monday, I will pick up a few things on Tuesday.  On Tuesday or Wednesday  night, I take a picture of my deals and write the post.  The important thing I want to share is that my shopping isn’t over for the week.  As good deals crop up,  I’ll pick them up when I’m out and about.  You don’t ever see a picture of them, but I’m still shopping through the week.  For instance, last week  I grabbed the free Zippo candle lighters deal at Rite Aid!

The moral to this story is: check our blog daily to see if there are other deals you might want to do!  Have a great couponing week!
