Here on KCL, I previously wrote an article about how petite women can save big on clothes by shopping for clothes in the children’s department. Since you have to wear an XS or a size 2 petite or smaller to fit into girls’ clothing, I assumed that when it came to shoes, you would likewise have to have teeny-tiny, Cinderalla-sized feet to be able to fit into kids’ shoe sizes. But when I actually took the time to look at the Shoe Size Conversion Guides for both Kids and Women, I was shocked to find that women who wear all the way up to a sizable women’s U.S. size 9 shoe can fit into kids’ shoes sizes.

Kids’ shoes sizes are split into two categories: little kid shoe sizes and big kid shoe sizes, which run from a big kids’ size 3.5 to a big kids’ size 7. You can convert women’s shoe sizes to big kids’ shoe sizes, but not to little kids’ shoe sizes. To convert your women’s shoe size to a big kids’ shoe size, simply subtract 2 sizes from your women’s shoe size. For example, a women’s size 7 shoe is equivalent to a big kids’ size 5 shoe. The chart below shows you the conversions between women’s shoe sizes and big kids’ shoe sizes.

Source: Nordstrom Kids’ Shoe Size Chart

So why would a stylish, grown woman want to wear kids’ shoes? Simple—because these days designers are making kids’ shoes that look identical or very similar to their women’s shoe designs, but typically at a lower price point. What Imelda Marcos wannabe wouldn’t want to score designer shoe styles at a lower price? Check out below four different examples of on-trend shoe styles that are available in nearly identical (except for the price) women’s versions and kids’ versions:

Womens: TOMS Classic Canvas Slip-On, $47.95
Kids: TOMS Classic Youth Slip-On, $37.95
Savings: $10.00 (or 21%)

Womens: Minnentonka Double Fringe Boot, $57.95
Kids: Minnentonka Double Fringe Boot, $39.95
Savings: $18.00 (or 31%)

Womens: Steve Madden Troopa Leather Boot, $99.95
Kids: Steve Madden Troopa Leather Boot, $69.95
Savings: $30.00 (or 30%)

Womens: Cole Haan Lunargrand Chukka, $194.90
Kids: Cole Haan Kids Air Paul Chukka, $54.99
Savings: $139.91 (or 72%)

I am scared I wear a kids size 5, would women size 5 fit me

Reply

im a size 9 in womens but it too expensive would i fit into kids shoes

Are boys and girls youth the same size? I have heard you still need to go up in size from boys to girls. Since I wear a 5.5 in boys grade school I would also wear a 5.5 in girls grade school? Thanks!

Reply

Kristy…yes boys and girls youth are the same size. There’s no difference in gender sizes until you reach adult sizes, at which point, the boys goes straight to mens, and girls has that weird layover with women’s. So if you were say an 9 in women’s, you’d be a 7 in kids, and also a 7 in men’s. In your case, a kid’s 5.5 is a kid’s 5.5, regardless of gender.

Reply

So I wear a women’s shoe size 9. That’s means I’d fit s girl’s size 7? I’m a little confused.

Reply

Yes! I just realized my 9 year old daughter who wears a 7Y wears a 9 in women’s!! I’m still in shock!!!

Reply

are u absolutely sure cause i dont want to buy a shoe and its to small

I’m a size 9.5 in what size should I buy in big kids size

Reply

It doesn’t go up to that size only up to women’s 9

Reply

If I wear a 7 in a half in women’s what size should I buy in big kids sizes?

Reply

5 1/2

Reply

So if I’m a size 7 women’s and a size 5 in youth does it matter if it’s boys or girls (youth) shoes ?

Reply

nope. boys and girls youth are the same

Reply

Thank you ‚ô°

Reply

Boys are preferable, this is from my own experience and depending on how the shoe is made and what brand makes it, I’m a mostly a 7.5 and sometimes an 8 in women’s, and I find that boy’s sizes fit better. But you can do whatever you want, this is just an idea.

Reply

If im a size 5 in mens what it be in little boys ??

Reply

Size 5 men’s doesn’t exist, you’re already wearing little boys shoes. Men sizes start at size 7 (continuing on from boys size 7).

Reply

Youth (big kid) sizes are the same as men’s sizes. So a size 6y would also be a size 6m.

Reply

Men’s and boys are exactly the same. I don’t know why they sell them separately, maybe it’s just to make more money. Because every show store I’ve ever gone to, men’s and women’s shoes are much more expensive. Has this happened to you? Or is this just determined by where you live?

Reply

This is funny because I can’t wear Toms since they’re extremely narrow (the women’s) and I went to the store and the lady suggested kid’s size so now I get sz 4 youth and she told me that they make kid’s shoes wider and sturdier! So triple score, now I have a bunch of Tom’s youth shoes and they’re cheaper and more comfy! ūüėÄ

Reply

This is usually the opposite of the other manufacturers, as the youth sizes are often lesser quality than the more expensive women’s sizes. In general, youth sizes are only made to LOOK like their adult equivalent, not perform as well or last as long unfortunately.

I just realized this myself recently, and was wondering why I never thought of it before!! It’s genius.

There is no doubt the Cogoerssinnal Democrats took a shellacking. My point is the President wasn’t on the ballot. As for why he seems to have moved to the middle. It’s smart politics when it comes to getting things done with a congress that is now split and a public that expects more to be done to improve the economy. So far it’s pretty clear the public likes what it sees from the President.

With havin so much content do you ever run into any issues of plagorism or copyright ineirngfment? My blog has a lot of exclusive content I’ve either created myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my agreement. Do you know any methods to help prevent content from being stolen? I’d definitely appreciate it.

Hello! I’m a women whose in sizes around 8 – 8,5 from Canada, and I’m trying to find adult sized Heelys as I can’t order them from the US Heelys main store. I found boys’ Heelys on different sites with the sizes 6M so I’m wondering if that would be adjustable for me to wear! Thank you lovelies!

Reply

I wear a Ladies size 8. My foot is a bit on the wide side. I don’t have to wear a W in women’s, but it is more comfortable. What size would I wear in kid’s sizes?

Reply

You are lucky, women’s 8 is the last size in youth. I wear a 8.5 so I’m out of youth. You would wear a 6 youth.
8 women’s – 2 = 6 youth

Reply

So if I’m a size 6.5 in womens would I he a size 4.5 in kids?

Reply

Correct!

Reply

My granddaughter wears a women’s size 7. I’m buying her Heelies, their sizes for big kids have 5M. What does the M mean? Should I not order the shoe for her because if the M? Is that a code for kids only size?

Reply

The M is actually for width and usually indicates that it is a normal width. The only time to be concerned is if any other letter accompanies the number shoe size. Hope this helps ūüôā

Reply

Linda it means medium. If there is a W it means wide

Reply

Linda the M refers to the width of the shoe so it would mean it’s a medium width shoe tha’s all

Reply

So if a man is a size 9 in adult shoes would he be a size 7 in big boy shoes? or does this only work with females?

Reply

It only works for women. Kids’ shoes usually run on the same scale as men’s shoes (a woman with a size 8 would be a 6 in kids’, she should also be a 6 in men’s), so a man with a size 9 wouldn’t be able to fit kids’shoes, but a man with a size 7 foot would be able to.

Reply

Is a womens 6.5 a kids 4.5 or 5 if i have a wide foot?

Reply

I have a short wide foot,- I buy a boys size 5 and normally width is fine. I shop the boys section to get the width I need.

Reply

So a boys 7 (big size) is equivalent to what in girls ?

Reply

7 big boy size fits a woman size 9…..I am a size 8.5 in women and buy 6.5 in girls youth or 6 from big boy(youth).

Reply

Boy/Girls are on the same size chart ie Kids/Youth.

Reply

Thank you for sharing this! Very helpful.

Reply

My size shoes is 6 women and What is my size in big kids size?

Reply

4 or 4.5 if you have a wide foot.

Reply

I wear a 7.5 adult shoe. 5.5 was too small but big kids 11 fit great. Go figure.

Reply

I’m 4’11.5″ tall and have shopped for both clothes and shoes in the kids department. It’s always great to save tons of money this way. Makes up for having you special order my hubbys (6’3″ tall) size 13-14 extra wide shoes. Lol

this is awesome! I’m going to be saving a lot of money on shoes now that i’ll be looking in the kids’ section! ūüôā

A 7 in kids/youth.

I hate when idiots just read titles and don’t bother to use their limited mental capacity to figure out a question. You’re that kid in class who asks questions the teacher just answered.

Reply

And why must those that have the answers have to act like a cruel, rude bully with those that don’t; as the ‘adult-bully’ reverts to the same childlike state in the same instances! Are you 3 so superior that you are always right? Is is possible that this poor lady just didn’t think, perhaps because she has too much ‘busy’ going on in her life?? We can’t give someone the benefit of the doubt? I work with people like the lady asking the question and the “bully’s” you 3 responders appear to be. Both types are challenging for the rest of us to tolerate but there are ways to say ‘uncomfortable’ things when necessary without being a ‘bully’ or choose not to say anything at all in case of doubt!. …I would say your actions were just as thoughtless!

Reply

Debbi Amen! I was just thinking what you wrote when I was reading these comments. I agree with what you put out here. No need for people to have to be rude or disrespectful. Whatever Happened to hearing there are never no dumb questions, it’s better to ask a dumb question than not to ask anything and assume, don’t say nothing if you dnt have anything nice to say, etc. etc. etc…… We should show other people a little bit more respect and understanding.

Reply

Yes I totally agree!! I know I’m way late to the party lol but I just thought I’d tell you that was very nice that you & Debbie stuck up for that women! This generation is horrible if you sit and think about it… It just keeps getting worse and worse and I for one am a part of that generation and it sucks because my generation they don’t do anything for one they don’t like to vote for two they think they’re entitled lol I can keep going on and on and on about this generation all I can do is teach my daughters to respect their elders and teach them life lessons and teach them that they have to work hard to get where they want to be in life xcetera LOL I can go on for days but I just wanted to give you guys a shout out for sticking up for that woman that was very nice!

Reply

I absolutely think we need to talk with respect to one another but on the other hand…I also understand this dislike for people that can’t take a couple seconds to just glance at a chart. Instead of learning how to do it or taking some time to find it out they waste someone else’s time and the opportunity to learn independently. It is annoying. But yes, responding more politely would have been nice.

As for the article…so good!!! Keep up the great work!

Reply

Maybe she just didn’t know if the sizing was different with boys and girls like there is with men vs women… that’s why this board is up here for people to share information and ask questions

Reply

and you are not bullying the other three who answer, then you may be the “known all girl” at school who thinks is always right, defensor of the inocent, yeah rigth, see the girl with the question is stupid, this is not even my native lenguage as you can figure out now, but it is really easy to understand, you just need to read it, dont make it easy to people who dont even try, please that is comformism, and a rejection of evolution

Reply

People who are quick to judge are just ignorant and use every opportunity to project their low self esteem onto others to make themselves feel superior. They have no ability to see anything from some one elses point of view. I thought it was very informative, i dont have children and really didnt know if there was a difference between girls vs boys youth sizes and would have guessed there would be, as there is between men and women. Way to drag a perfectly good piece of advice into the ground, taking everyone with it. I hope you at least feel better than us all now.

Reply

AMEN!!! LOL

Hi Jackie,
I find it odd that with all of the people who took the time to either write nastiness or philosophically respond to it, no one actually answered the question. From looking around it seems that there is a 2-size difference between boy and girl sizes. So a women’s size 9 would be a girls’ size 7 and a boys’ size 5.
Be well,
ūüôā

thank you lauren for being polite and kind
we must do such for peace

back to the point, isn’t it big kids means girls and boys? so 9 woman will be 7 in big kid? correct me if i’m wrong ,, politely though ūüėÄ

cheers’
ps: this is a great tips ,, thank you

Yes, I too have small feet so I often buy youth sizes. Boys boots especially seem to run a little larger than girls.I wouldn’t order boy’ styles online, as I have guessed wrong too many times. You also have to watch the width as many youth sizes are narrower. I find it helpful to read the reviews carefully. I wear anywhere from a ladies 5.5 to 6.5 and a youth 3 ro 4.5. And wow, are some of you quick to be ass holes!

Reply

You’re so sweet thanks for your kindness

Reply

Not quite. Youth sizes are uni-sex. Meaning that both boys and girls sizes are the SAME. Youth sizes also run concurrent to Men’s sizes. So a size 7 youth, would be exactly the same size as a men’s 7 (length wise, men’s width is generally wider than youth width). It’s only women’s sizes that throw a wrench in the works with wonky sizing. Women’s sizes are anywhere from 1.5 to 2 ranks different. Meaning a women’s size 8 is equivalent to a youth size 6-6.5, it all depends on the manufacturer. Another thing to keep in mind is youth, aka children are still growing. Shoe manufacturers know this and generally produce a lesser quality shoe in youth sizes as children will out grow the shoe before they wear them out. So youth sizes may be less expensive, women’s sized shoes will last much longer, making the more expensive shoe the better deal in the long run.

You didn’t even need to read the article. Just look at the conversion chart like myself. That is why you are being “bullied”. That’s not even bullying. Use your freaking head. Not only were you probably that kid in class who asked a question that had already JUST been answered, you were probably that kid who shot her hand up to use the bathroom JUST as the teacher was about to give specific instructions or pertainent information. And when you couldn’t wait to use the bathroom, you probably came back to class clueless about what you missed. Your peers were probably annoyed with you because they had to explain everything and you still didn’t understand so you took time away from the teacher helping other students so she could RE-EXPLAIN the directions specifically to YOU even though the teacher suggested you hold tight for just another minute. That’s not bullying. That’s called welcome to earth, idiot.

Reply

wow… reading through this post was a waste of 3 minutes that I’ll never get back. What a bunch of cackling hens!

Reply

Wow! Are these “ladies” done venting? IMO certain individuals may just need anger management, if something this small gets them so worked up, imagine how they react to face to face situations? I guess certain people missed the part in school where they also taught us to be polite to others and treat them as you would like to be treated. All the time they feel was wasted, and they couldn’t even answer the question, and if you didnt feel the need to read the article because the chart was self explained, why take the time to read comments? Obviously had plenty of time, you ummmmm ladies chose to waste it… Smh

Reply

I’ll bet none of the “bullies” above would have the nerve to speak to someone like that in person. It’s just too easy to be an a-hole in writing when you do not have to face anyone and chance the repercussions. I agree with Cy above, what a waste of time reading all that stupid ranting. I thank the author for the info because I was wondering about just this info a moment ago and came across this pm my google search for an answer.

Dor just a little advice Converse is very confusing I know the chart looks easy but I order online all the time and my daughter loves Converse but converse are universal they’re for both men and women lol and youth is the same way unlike Nike or Adidas Exedra so my suggestion is to go to Foot Locker or a Kids Foot Locker and try a girls youth size and then a boys youth size and see what you would like better!! I hope this helps LOL I hope I didn’t confuse you LOL have a good day hun
