I have an ice cream-loving family and typically purchase about four buckets at a time (on sale, of course). These ice cream buckets can accumulate pretty quickly, so I’ve found 10 ways to recycle these useful little containers!
Prior to making your project, remove the writing on the ice cream bucket by pouring 100% acetone onto the writing. Let it sit for a few minutes, then rub in a circular motion with a paper towel until removed. Now you’re ready to begin your DIY projects if you have a few minutes and some imagination!
1. Create a cute storage basket
Storage baskets can be super expensive, but you can create this cute storage solution using only twine! All you need is a hot glue gun and enough twine to wrap around the bucket. This creates an all-natural look which will blend with any decor.

2. Grow your own plants
Don’t bother to purchase flower pots to grow your starter plants. Use an ice cream bucket for seedlings to get a good root before transplanting to your garden or landscape. Punch 2-3 holes in the bottom of the bucket with an ice pick to help with drainage.

3. Display your decorative flair
My daughter is an avid zebra-print lover, and she fell in love with this makeover for an ice cream bucket. She uses this to store her art supplies for all of her projects.

4. LEGO Storage
Store those LEGO sets in labeled ice cream buckets, and keep the parts separate. This is also great if the kids are in the middle of a “building project” and don’t want to take their hard work apart—just have them place it into an ice cream bucket so that they can keep all of their pieces together until the next time they play!

5. Yarn dispenser
If you crochet or knit, then you know that keeping your yarn organized is always a chore. An ice cream bucket is a great organizer as it will hold several balls of yarn, and you can thread them through a hole in the top and easily keep them separate. I mix and match colors, so this dispenser idea works great for my projects–keeps them organized, and I have a handle for a quick tote!

6. Carsick Disposable Kit
We frequently travel with the kids, and they often take turns getting carsick. A disposable ice cream bucket is a lifesaver for saving the car seat, upholstery, and carpet in my van. I keep a plastic bag inside the bucket, so I can use and toss! Refill the carsick disposable kit with wipes and plastic bags as needed.

7. Wall hanging for storage
I love any idea that makes use of an empty space. This idea is a great organizational tool for a workroom, craft room, or playroom. Label the buckets and hang over a shelf, desk, or bench to organize your stuff!

8. Sewing fabric storage container
If you’re a quilter, I’ve got the greatest storage idea for your quilt squares. Whether you’re cutting, pinning, or sewing, you can keep your project design organized as these buckets hold an ample amount of fabric.

9. Transform into a mini trash can
Decorative duct tape or Washi tape is my favorite go-to for a quick transformation of an otherwise boring item. Pick out a design and cover your ice cream bucket to use as a decorative trash can, a litter picker upper, or as a storage pail in the pantry.

10. Hydrate your pet while he is entertained
Fill an ice cream bucket with water, add your dog’s toys, and freeze it. Place in a pie pan and watch your dog play while he gets hydrated at the same time.
