Tips for Returns and Exchanges

When it comes to store return policies, knowing what to expect before you shop is everything.
How long is the return window? Can you make an exchange? Do you need a receipt? Will you pay for return shipping? Is your item even eligible for a return?
In true KCL fashion, we combed through return policies at your favorite stores, pulled out the important stuff, and put it into words that don’t drive you crazy.
Understanding return policies keeps YOU in control of what you spend — we’re just here to make it easy. Wanna be a return policy rockstar? Bookmark this page and come back literally whenever.
The start of your return window depends on whether you shop in store or online. If you make your purchase in store, the return window starts as soon as you checkout. But for online purchases, the return window generally starts the day your items get delivered.

Warranties are usually limited by two things:
1. Length
2. Coverage
Length: Some warranties only last a year, meaning the brand will fix your product for up to a year after you purchase it. Other warranties last forever, so your product is covered for as long as you own it. These are what we call lifetime warranties.
Coverage: Sometimes brands limit their warranties to only cover certain types of damage. They may only repair manufacturer defects, but not normal wear and tear. Warranties that don’t limit the level of damage they cover are called unlimited warranties.
But the best — the absolute BEST warranties — have a combination of both: They cover most types of damage and your product is protected for as long as you own it. If you purchase a product with this kind of guarantee, you’ve hit the warranty jackpot.

Which stores/brands have unlimited warranties?

To the shoppers who crumple up receipts and never see them again, this one’s for you.
Even the smartest shoppers make mistakes. Luckily, lots of stores have other ways of proving your purchase without a receipt.
Some stores accept returns without any proof of purchase — like Lowe’s, Macy’s, JCPenney, and Dick’s Sporting Goods to name a few. As long as you have your ID, they’ll give you store credit without having to look up your purchase.

Where can I return items without a receipt?

Having to pay to send your items back is a big pain.
Not only do you end up paying more than you have to, but you’re literally being punished for not loving your purchase. Some stores deduct return shipping fees from your refund, others charge you a flat fee of $5-10 when you return items by mail.
But the stores with winning return policies won’t charge you at all — they’ll fully cover the cost of return shipping when you mail back online purchases.

What are the stores that offer free return shipping by mail?
