Dick's Return Policy is Great. But It Has Too Many Exceptions.

The Krazy Coupon Lady is an independent service supported by advertising. Most of the offers appearing on our site are from companies from which we receive compensation. Dick’s Sporting Goods’ return policy is great and easy-to-use – but only if you buy the right product. On the one hand, you have a decently long return window, and in some cases you can even make returns if you’ve used a product and didn’t like it.

But there are so many carve outs and exceptions that you’ll really need to study each, specific product before making your final purchase.

Don’t forget to download the KCL app and get more tips, deals, and savings. Plus, check out our best hacks for saving at Dick’s Sporting Goods.

1. The time frame for Dick’s return policy is now 90 days.

Dick’s used to have a 60-day return policy, but during the pandemic they extended their return policy to 90 days and it has remained at 90 since then. That’s for online and in-store purchases.

TIP: If you find your item cheaper elsewhere, Dick’s will price match for up to 14 days.

2. Bring proof of purchase for easy refunds.

The Dick’s Sporting Goods return policy makes getting a refund a breeze – as long as you have proof of purchase. You’ll be able to get your refund via your original method of payment.

Proof of purchase doesn’t necessarily have to be a receipt. It can also include:

  • Your order number.
  • An order confirmation email.
  • A packing slip.
  • A return barcode.

3. The Dick’s Sporting Goods return policy allows for returns with no receipt.

If you don’t have a receipt, you can still return your item. You’ll just need to present a valid ID at the time of return, and be prepared to accept store credit rather than a refund on your credit card statement.

You may lose some money if you don’t have your receipt, though. Dick’s will only refund you the lowest selling price regardless of what you initially paid.

4. Store credit can only be used for in-person purchases.

Before you lose your receipt, be aware that store credit can only be used for in-store purchases. No online shopping with that new plastic.

5. Dick’s online return policy allows for in-store returns.

This is a great strategy to use if you want your refund as quickly as possible, or if you just don’t want to deal with the process of shipping.

6. Make contactless returns at Dick’s with curbside.

Dick’s is serious about keeping their curbside experience contactless. And we love them for it. To return an item, you have to put it in your trunk.

Then, call your store’s number and make sure you have your receipt or order number ready. Dick’s employees will process your return over the phone and get your item out of the car for you while you sit and wait.

Dick’s can only do a curbside return if you originally paid with a credit or debit card. If you paid with cash or a gift card, you’ll have to return in-store, or via mail if you ordered online.

7. You don’t necessarily need tags under Dick’s return policy.

Amazingly enough, you don’t necessarily need to have tags on your item to return it to Dick’s, though it is good practice to bring the detached tags with you. The company openly acknowledges that customers may need to use some items before they know if they’re a bad fit, so they allow returns as long as your item is ‘clean and in good condition.’

What does good condition mean? That’s up to the discretion of every employee or manager. It’s best not to test this policy as there’s no guarantee your item will be deemed acceptable for return. But it is notable that there’s at least a little leeway built in.

8. Clearance items are returnable at Dick’s.

Dick’s allows you to return online and in-store clearance items. That means you can take risks on your online purchases and return clearance items you don’t like.

9. There are lots of items you can’t return, though.

The Dick’s return policy has tons of carve outs. Here are some of the items you’ll never be able to return:

  • Firearms.
  • Ammunition.
  • Hunting bows.
  • Crossbows.
  • Gun powder.
  • Primers.
  • Rifles.
  • Muzzleloaders.
  • Black powder.
  • Anything that requires gasoline or fuel.
  • Airbeds.
  • Custom items.
  • Special order items.
  • Autographed collectibles.
  • Topp Trading Cards.
  • Yeezys.
  • Gift cards.

Then there are items you can return, but only under specific circumstances. Let’s go through the list.

10. Don’t open these items or you won’t be able to return them.

Dick’s Sporting Goods’ return policy doesn’t allow you to return these items if you’ve broken the factory seal:

  • Baseball and softball bats.
  • Football helmets.
  • Electric scooters.
  • Electric bikes.
  • Face coverings.
  • Ice rinks.
  • Port-a-potties.

11. Dick’s has a 24-hour return policy on bikes.

There are some major stipulations, though. First, you only have 24 hours to inspect your bike; you’re not allowed to actually ride it. If you do, you won’t be able to make the return.

If the bike is assembled in-store, you have 24 hours to inspect and return it. If it’s shipping to your house, you’ll only get the 24-hour grace period if the bike is still in the box.

Bikes are also an exception to the tag policy. Whether your bike was purchased in-store or shipped to your house, you will not be able to return it unless it still has all original tags and labels.

12. Be sure to hold onto all the packaging for electronics returns.

You can return electronics, but only if you’ve held onto all the packaging. You also better have all the parts intact, along with any manuals or accessories.

13. These items are exchangeable for seven days.

If you purchased any of these items, you’ll be able to exchange them for seven days – but only if you held onto the receipt or have another proof of purchase:

  • Nike Adapt shoes.
  • Pre-owned items.
  • Demo items.
  • Refurbished items.

14. Dick’s return policy gives you 30 days to return Theragun and Hyperice products.

Unless you purchased these items refurbished. Then they’ll fall under the seven-day rule.

15. You can’t return this item in-store.

Any Rapsodo items have to be returned via snail mail.

16. I managed to get gift card money refunded onto my credit card.

I recently purchased a shirt online at Dick’s with a gift card. When I returned my top in-store, the cashier refunded my credit card the entire amount of the top (minus shipping) instead of the gift card.

I don’t know that this is standard policy – only that it happened to me. So it’s possible, but your mileage may vary!

17. Coupon usage will affect your refund.

Did you use a coupon on your purchase? If so, Dick’s return policy says that when you make your return, you’ll only get what you paid – not the full value of the item.

So if you used a $10 coupon on a $100 purchase, you’ll only get back the $90 you actually forked out.
