Dick’s Sporting Goods has a super easy, old-school return policy. When I bought a top online with a gift card and it didn’t fit, I returned it to the store with no hassles at all. But, they do have a few little quirks. Here’s what I learned about Dick’s returns policy.

Don’t forget to download the KCL app and get more tips, deals, and savings. And visit KCL’s site for Dick’s coupons.

1. You have 90 days to return items at Dick’s.

Dick’s used to have a 60-day return policy, but since the pandemic they’ve extended their return policy to 90 days—that’s for online and in-store purchases.

So don’t stress if you can’t make your return quickly. You have 90 days to return most items (more on that below).

TIP: If you find your item cheaper elsewhere, Dick’s will price match for up to 14 days! They’ll give you the difference back in cash!

2. Dick’s return policy says store credit only if you have the tags.

If you don’t have an order number or receipt but the tags are still on the item, Dick’s will give you store credit. If the tags aren’t attached to the item, I was told by a Dick’s associate that they would still give me store credit as long as I had the tags in hand and the item looked new.

If you order online, you can find your order number easily on your confirmation email.

If you don’t have the tags, order number, or receipt and you bought the item in store…no dice. It’s eBay for your item if you want any money back.

3. Return your items curbside an hour early (if you purchased with a card).

You don’t have to stand in a long line at Dick’s to make a return. Call your local store’s number and make sure you have your receipt or order number ready. Dick’s employees will process your return and get your item out of the car for you while you sit and wait.

Dick’s can only do a curbside return if you originally paid with a card. They don’t do cash refunds at curbside. Bummer.

But wait! Most Dick’s Sporting Goods stores offer curbside pickup and returns starting at 8 a.m. (That’s one hour before they open at 9 a.m.) Call your local store to check if they do this!

4. Read the fine print. Some items can’t be returned.

Items like crossbows, hunting bows, ammunition, firearms, and used bikes cannot be returned once they’re purchased. You can read more about Dick’s exceptions on their website.

5. Online items come with free return shipping.

Online items can be returned with a free shipping label you can print out, once you’ve started the online return process.

This is nice, but one warning…

6. You’ll lose your original shipping fee no matter where you return your item.

Bummer. Shipping costs were almost $7 for my top. Make online purchases for over $65 to receive free shipping or pick up your item free in store.

7. Return online items in store.

Unlike some retailers, Dick’s does allow you to return online items to their store. So don’t panic if your kid’s got a game and you need new gear. Just head to your nearest store (they have 850 locations, so you most likely have one near you.) Dick’s store hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. except Sundays. Check your local store for Sunday hours.

8. Returning clearance items is easy at Dick’s.

Dick’s allows you to return online and in-store clearance items. That means you can take risks on your online purchases and return clearance items you don’t like.

9. If you return an item you bought on a gift card, you can get a refund on your credit card.

This happened to me. When I returned my top in store, the cashier refunded my credit card the entire amount of the top (minus shipping) instead of the gift card. Score!
