When I first started couponing, I felt very proud of myself if I could just match the right coupon with the right product (brand, size, flavor, etc.). As I got a little better, I learned how to stack a store coupon with a manufacturer coupon for extra savings.
But the magic really started happening when I began to study the art of stacking coupon codes online. Here are some hints and tips to help you master the basics of stacking coupon codes online.
Stacking defined
In the offline world, “stacking” commonly means “using one store coupon with one manufacturer coupon together for greater savings” (often used in addition to “sale” items).
In the online world, the word “stacking” essentially means “you can use more than one coupon or coupon code per order.”
If coupons or codes are not stackable online or offline, there will be some fine print stating “only one per customer,” “only one per order,” or something similar.
How to stack coupon codes online
The mechanics of stacking coupon codes online is simple. When you go to your online cart to check out, there will be a blank box with a prompt that states something like “enter coupon/promo/discount code here.”
For stackable online codes, in most cases (except where specifically instructed otherwise) you will enter each code one at a time, pressing “enter” after each to adjust your total balance to reflect all coupon codes.
You can double-check your work by looking at your online invoice before you pay—you should see all coupon codes reflected above your final amount owed. If one of your codes is for free shipping, then also check the “shipping” line to be sure the amount is zero.
List of online retailers that permit stacking
Of course, any retailer may offer coupon codes, or stacking of coupon codes, at any time. But if you’re new, you can reliably find ways to practice your new online coupon code stacking skills with these online retailers.

An example of coupon code stacking
In addition to stacking the coupon codes themselves, there are additional ways you can find savings online by combining coupon codes with other perks.
Here is an example that includes many ways to save online by combining coupon codes, free shipping, first-time shopper rewards, frequent shopper rewards, credit card perks and ongoing sales.
Example: Let’s say you’re shopping Kohl’s online store, where select merchandise is advertised at 50% off full retail value.
- First, since you’ve never shopped at Kohl’s online before, you could sign up for the mailing list and get a 15% off code for first-time shoppers.
- You could then use your store credit card to pay for the order, giving you an extra 15%, 20% or 30% off the total AND earning you rewards points that you can later redeem for like-cash savings (1 point = $1, get a $5 reward for every 100 points).
- PLUS, you get $10 in Kohl’s cash for every $50 you spend.
- And you can stack code upon code for various items in your cart, include “INTIMATES10” for your lingerie, “MENSTYLE10” for your husband’s new shirt, etc.
- Finally, by ordering $75+ of merchandise, you could enjoy free shipping with your order.
