Although the idea of having to start a fire without the use of a remote control sounds antiquated to many, there still may come a time when you find yourself needing this trick: if you’re camping or trying to get a fire started for roasting S’mores one evening, try using a cotton ball to get the fire going! Start by spreading petroleum jelly over a cotton ball, leaving just the area that you are holding uncovered. Throw the cotton ball in the fire pit and light a fire as you normally would. The petroleum jelly-coated cotton ball will burn for about 2–3 minutes and works great as a starter to get your fire roaring!
