If you’ve ever owned Carhartt pants, you know they’re incredibly durable. But, if yours have seen better days, now you can return them at Carhartt stores and get a digital gift card to shop again. The Carhartt Reworked Resale Program lets you swap your used items for this reward on the spot. The program started online, but now you can exchange your gently used items in 35 U.S. retail stores as of July 19, 2023.

Our first question is: how much are these gift cards worth? Well, it likely depends on a few factors including the item’s condition and its MSRP. We reached out to Carhartt reps to for more information on the starting value of the digital gift cards rewarded for participating in the Reworked program, but have yet to hear back. We’ll update this post when we do.

Before you start hauling a bag full of stuff to trade in, you’re limited to five items. Store associates will evaluate each piece before handing you a shopping voucher. Oh yeah, they need to be clean, too. The program accepts products like jeans, jackets, and hoodies. However they do not accept T-shirts, kids clothes, boots, and items that are older than 10 years. We have the full list of accepted items below, as well as what you can’t trade in through the program.

Customers are limited to five items to trade in; here’s what you can and can’t return.

Carhartt Reworked accepts most pre-owned items, but they’ll have to be inspected before you receive a credit voucher for each item. Point blank, they need to be laundered, functional, and in a condition that can be resold. Once accepted, the garments are professionally cleaned, repaired if necessary, and then readied for resale.

Here’s what you can and can’t trade in according to Carhartt’s website:

Allowed:

  • Jackets and coats
  • Bibs and overalls
  • Shirt jackets
  • Hoodies and sweatshirts
  • Pants
  • Jeans

Not Allowed:

  • Non-Carhartt items
  • Unrepairable items
  • Any garment older than 10 years
  • Accessories
  • Flame-resistant gear
  • High-visibility gear
  • T-shirts and work shirts
  • Kids clothing
  • Boots
  • Pet gear
  • Base layer
  • Scrubs

Most Carhartt stores participate in the trade-in program, but a mail-in option is coming soon.

With the exception of Orlando, Florida Factory Store, 35 retail Carhartt stores in the U.S. will take part in the trade-in program as of July 19, 2023. Use the store locator to find your closest store. Carhartt Reworked began as a 6-store pilot program in March 2023, but mail-in trade-ins will begin later in 2023.

The digital card cards can be used online and in stores, and their value will be determined at the time you trade in your Carhartt items.

Like I noted, if your products are accepted, Carhartt will give you a digital gift card for your items. Use this voucher on Carhartt.com and at any company store. To save money on your next purchase, shop their resale items. I’m seeing sweatshirts, pants, jeans, and coats for 30-55% off.

Again, we don’t yet know how much these rewards vouchers may be worth, but we have reached out to Carhartt for more information. It likely depends on the condition of the item you are trading in.

Use Carhartt’s donation or repair service if your item isn’t accepted.

If you sort through your trade-in items and find some that are simply unrepairable, Carhartt has a few solutions. Depending on how bad of a condition your items are, Carhartt will donate any items not accepted.

If you want to hold onto your beloved overalls, Carhartt’s Wicker Park (Illinois) and Murray (Utah) stores have professional repair teams on site to fix garments, but you can also mail yours in. All you have to do is submit an online request form or call the Customer Service number to get started.

Mail in your pre-washed items, and expect to get it back in about 4-5 weeks. Head to Carhartt’s Repair page to view the lengthy list of what can’t be repaired. There’s also a DIY repair kit for sale in case you want to tackle the job yourself.
