If you bought a Pelton Bike at Amazon or via onepeloton.com (and don’t hang clothes on the exercise bike like I do), you’re going to want to pay attention: Peloton has issued a recall for millions of their bikes.
The reason? Peloton has received 35 reports of bike seat posts breaking and detaching, resulting in injuries to users — including a fractured wrist, lacerations and bruises caused by falling off the bike.
So which Peloton models are part of this recall? What should you do if you have one of these bikes? We’ll tell you all you need to know about this product recall.
More than 2 million first-generation Pelton Bikes are being recalled.
It’s only the first-generation Pelton Bikes that are caught up in this recall, identified with the model number PL-01. Not sure if you have a Generation 1 or a Generation 2 bike? Look at your screen. If it only tilts, it’s the PL-01. If it can rotate 180 degrees, it’s the PL-02.
According to the official recall notice, 2.2 million bikes are affected by the recall, due to the possibility of seats breaking or detaching while in use. The estimated 2.2 million affected Peloton Bikes were sold nationwide between January 2018 and May 2023 at Peloton and Dick’s Sporting Goods stores, as well as at Onepeloton.com, Amazon.com, and Dicksportinggoods.com.
If you have the recalled bike, call Peloton for a new seat post.
If you own a Peloton Bike with model number PL-01, Peloton and the Consumer Product Safety Commission say to stop using the bike immediately. Instead, contact Peloton at 1-866-679-9129 (or in the support section at onepeloton.com). They’re providing free new seat posts that can be self-installed, which should address the safety issue.
The second-generation Peloton Bike, as well as the Tread and Row machines aren’t affected by this recall.
No, you can’t return your entire bike for a refund.
If you’re affected by the recall, the replacement post is your only option. You don’t have to drag that heavy bike into your SUV to return it to Dick’s Sporting Goods or anything. But that also means that there aren’t any refunds available to you with this recall — unless you just bought your Bike.
Peloton’s regular product return policy still applies with the recall. So, if you received your Peloton Bike within the last 30 days and meet the return criteria, you can request a return and potentially get a refund. The same goes for those currently doing a 30-day Home Trial — if you’re still within that trial period, you can also request a return.
