7. Create a double-sided homework station using a bookshelf.
Mount two halves of a thrift shop table or desk to a bookshelf — giving each child their own space to work.
You can pull that off for a lot less than the cost of IKEA’s Kallax shelf/table combo ($137.98) — but that option is always there, too.
Just purchase another tabletop, two legs and a second set of mounting hardware to secure another workstation on the opposite side.
8. Build a portable homework caddy from the dollar store.

The Home Depot lumber department will cut a white board to the right length (the board will cost around $16 and the cut is free), then mount the board over plastic file drawers (I found these for $9).
