Taking the fam to a drive-in theater for a movie night this summer is a fun and affordable family activity that won’t drain your wallet.

According to EntTelligence, the average price for a movie ticket was about $11.75 in 2022. That’s quite a chunk of change if you’re looking to entertain the whole family, right? Now here’s where the drive-in really shines — it’s way more affordable! This is especially true with drive-in double features. You get two movies for the price of one.

You could pay as little as $1 for children’s tickets. Plus, some groups, such as seniors, young kiddos, military, and first responders, may even get to watch movies for free.

With such cheap ticket prices, what type of movies can you expect to see at a drive-in theater? Drive-ins show a variety of movies, ranging from the newest releases like The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Disney’s Little Mermaid, Fast X, and Super Mario Bros Movie, to beloved classics. Either way, the drive-in is a solid family outing. Here’s a look at some other advantages of a drive-in and a list of drive-in theaters across the U.S.

Prices may vary and are per person/vehicle (unless otherwise noted) and may not include any taxes, online transaction fees, or early booking fees.

Drive-in theaters offer perks you’ll never get at a traditional movie theater.

In addition to cheaper ticket prices, drive-ins have other advantages. For the most part, here’s what you can expect:

  1. They have fair-style unique local concessions like funnel cakes, boiled peanuts, pickle ice, and a pickle in a bag.
  2. They allow outside food and drink.
  3. Dogs are allowed.
  4. Some have a playground area.
  5. You can bring your own chair(s) or couch.
  6. They allow RVs.
  7. You can recline your car seat back and get comfy with blankets and pillows.
  8. Some allow overnight or extended stays.

That said, there are some rules you gotta follow at the drive-in theater.

Watching a movie at a drive-in theater can be a fun family activity. However, there are rules. Here are some basics if you’ve never experienced a drive-in movie before:

  • Guests must turn off loud motors like diesel and dual exhaust before a movie starts.
  • You have to keep headlights and parking lights off during shows (including interior cargo lights).
  • Most drive-in theaters will show movies rain or shine — so no refunds or rain checks.
  • No loud music.
  • You gotta keep your pet leashed and clean up after them.
  • Supervise your children.

Is there a drive-in movie theater near me?

Although the number of drive-in movie theaters has dwindled over the decades, there are still a good number of them out there. If there’s not one near you, it might be worth taking a summer road trip to visit some of them.

Some drive-ins allow you to buy tickets online, and accept credit cards, while other drive-ins are cash only. Here is a list of drive-in theaters and the admission prices in each U.S. state that we were able to find online. If you know of a drive-in we missed, comment at the bottom of our post, and we’ll add it to our list.

Note: If a state isn’t listed, there’s no drive-in there. The movie film emoji (🎞️) means the drive-in offers a double feature, and the dollar sign emoji (💲) means the drive-in accepts cash only. And some drive-ins require food permits, which allow you to bring in outside foods.
