We confirmed the changes are coming, straight from a Target store in Sanford, Florida: Starting July 28, 2025, Target will no longer price match Amazon or Walmart, which were previously the only two competitors they allowed for price matching.
This is a big change from the August 2024 update, when Target narrowed its list to just those two retailers. Now, it's going a step further and removing them altogether.
A memo shared on Reddit says:
“Since most price matches happen within Target, we’re adjusting our price match policy to exclusively match our in-store, app, and Target.com pricing, including Target Plus items.”

Going forward, Target’s policy will only allow price matching to itself — meaning if the price is lower on Target.com or in the app, you can get that price in-store. But you won’t be able to match prices from any other retailer.

The New Target Price Match Policy, Starting July 28
After July 28, here’s what Target will still match:
Lower prices at your local Target store
Lower prices on Target.com
Lower prices in the Target app
Lower prices on items sold by Target Plus partners (as long as the product details match exactly)
The key is that the price must come from within the Target ecosystem. You can no longer match Amazon, Walmart, or any other outside competitor, online or in-store.
What’s No Longer Allowed as of July 28, 2025
Once the new policy goes into effect on July 28, here’s what you won’t be able to do:
No price matching Amazon — even for items sold and shipped by Amazon.
No price matching Walmart.
No price matching any other competitor (Best Buy, GameStop, Costco, etc.).
No third-party matches — only Target and Target Plus items qualify.
The Basics of the Target Price Match Policy
Target has left all the guesswork out of it. As of July 2025, you can only price match Target with Target. That means matching prices between the store, app, and Target.com, including Target Plus items. It has to be the same exact product (identical brand, size, weight, color, quantity, and model number). You can request a price match either in-store or online. You can still price match within 14 days of your purchase.
Here are the key things to know about price matching at Target:
Target Price Matching In Store
If you’re shopping in-store, all you need to do is show proof of the lower price to the cashier at checkout. While standing in line, I always scan the barcode of the item in the app, and if the product is cheaper online, I show the cashier my phone, and they adjust the price immediately — no manager, no forms.
KCL TIP: If I’m shopping in the store, I also scan anything I want to buy using the Target app to see if the item is cheaper at Target.com. If it’s cheaper online at Target.com, I show the cashier the lower price and get it price matched.
Target Price Matching Online
If you’re shopping online at Target.com and see a better price for the same exact item within 14 days, call 1 (800) 591-3869 or use the Target customer service chat. They’ll make sure you get the difference refunded to you.
Watch out for these Target price match exclusions.

There are a decent number of exclusions listed by Target in their fine print for price matching. Here are the ones that you definitely want to keep in mind:
Target-Specific Offers: You can't combine a lower price with Target Circle Bonuses, Target gift card offers, registry completion coupons, or Target coupons. Manufacturer coupons are okay after a price match, but only for in-store purchases.
Special Discounts and Sales: Excluded items include clearance, closeout, liquidation, damaged, used, open-box, refurbished, pre-owned, or rent-to-own items.
Pricing Errors and Special Promotions: Typo errors don’t qualify.
Third-Party Sellers and Special Categories: Marketplace prices from third-party sellers, items sold by a Target Plus Partner on Target.com or apps, and certain categories like alcohol (depending on state laws), optical products, clinic/pharmacy purchases, and contract mobile phone devices/plans are all excluded.
KCL TIP: Using a Target registry completion coupon? If so, you won’t be able to price match.
Pro Tips for Nailing Your Target Price Matches

Maximizing your savings at Target is easy if you know the rules. Here’s how to get the best prices with their policy:
Combine Discounts: Use your Target Circle Card to save an extra 5% after price matching.
Know the Rules: Coupons from manufacturers can be used after a price match, but not Target Circle offers.
Maximize Matches: There’s no limit on how many price matches you can claim in a day.
14-Day Price Adjustment: Target has a Price Match Guarantee. If you find a lower price within 14 days of your purchase, Target will adjust your price to match it, ensuring you always get the best deal.
Black Friday and Holidays: Starting in early November, Target makes holiday shopping stress free. If the price of an item you bought in-store or online drops at Target on or before Dec. 24, you can request a price adjustment. Just bring proof of purchase to Guest Services.
Grocery Price Matching: Technically, Target does price match groceries. However, be mindful of how the items are priced. For instance, you can’t match green peppers priced per item at Target with those sold by the pound.
