I am not ashamed to admit that I am a fan of most teeth staining agents dentists warn you about. I am an early riser in the morning, and for me this means a big cup of coffee. Okay, a lot of big cups of coffee. After a long, busy day, I savor my glass of red wine with dinner. I brush my teeth twice a day as recommended by my dentist, but brushing and flossing alone just wasn’t battling the stains I would acquire behind my teeth and in between the cracks.

For the longest time I was a huge fan of Crest White Strips Advanced, when I could afford them, that is! They whitened my teeth and kept them white for long periods of time. But recently, I started looking for cheaper solutions.

I thought maybe I could get a general idea of the products used in Crest White Strips and make my own whitening concoction! Oddly enough, one of the main ingredients in Crest White Strips is hydrogen peroxide. This triggered a research journey! I spent lots of time Googling hydrogen peroxide and whether or not it’s safe to put in your mouth. If it’s safe in Crest White Strips, then I figured a quick swish couldn’t hurt.

Before I gave it a shot, I sought out professional advice from my dentist. She advised me that it wouldn’t hurt, but like all over-the-counter mouthwashes, it is not safe to swallow. She also said that making my own toothpaste using hydrogen peroxide and baking soda would be great for whitening too!

So that’s what I did, and it’s so easy to make. I use a Tupperware bowl and combine two parts baking soda to one part hydrogen peroxide and mix until I get a toothpaste consistency. You can store it for a few days, but I don’t usually keep it past five! As with all products used in your mouth, you should ask your dentist first if it’s safe for you.

Swishing hydrogen peroxide once daily and using my own homemade toothpaste has saved me hundreds of dollars per year and has given me a bright white smile. The best part of all: people often ask me, “Where do you get your zoom whitening done?”
