Yes, I'm a bit of a mascara addict. In fact, my bathroom drawers are overflowing with a variety of these little tubes. As much as I love mascara, I don't love the price of some of the high-end brands. They can set me back by almost $30! Luckily, I found that there are many drugstore versions that are almost identical to my favorite mascaras. . .or in some cases, even better!
1. Instead of: Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real Mascara for $23
Benefit's "They're Real" is a popular multipurpose mascara. And it most definitely is multipurpose — it not only darkens your lashes, it volumizes, curls, separates and lifts them! The staggered bristles on the brush really grip your lashes, helping you achieve an even, thick application. Maybelline's "The Collosal Cat Eyes" mascara offers the same benefits for a fraction of the price! It even has a similar staggered bristle brush, although it is claw shaped. Neither mascara clumps, dries out or smudges — which is always a plus in my book!
2. Instead of: Lancome Hypnose Mascara for $27
Lancome's "Hypnose" mascara adds dramatic volume and length in a single stroke. You can even use it on your lower lash line to really make your eyes pop. Maybelline's "The Falsies" mascara provides the same results for under $6! Both apply well, neither flakes nor clumps, and they last all day without smudging. However, "The Falsies" is a tad bit thinner than "Hypnose," so be sure to apply two coats for the full effect.
3. Instead of: Smashbox Full Exposure for $19.50
"Full Exposure" mascara by Smashbox is a volumizing mascara that gives you a full "fake eyelash look" without applying false eyelashes. New York Color's "Big and Bold" mascara gives you the same effect for almost a fourth of the price! Both mascaras provide loads of volume that lasts all day without flaking or clumping. I actually prefer "Big and Bold" because of its big brush — the bristles coat my lashes in just one sweep.
4. Instead of: Dior Diorshow Mascara for $25
Dior's "Diorshow" mascara not only adds volume and length, it curls the lashes for extra-striking results. L'Oreal Paris's "Voluminous Full Definition" mascara has a similar rich formula that volumizes and separates the lashes for a super long lash effect. Both mascaras are long lasting and leave the lashes feeling natural and almost soft. Neither clumps — even at the bottom of the tube.
5. Instead of: Urban Decay Big Fatty for $20
Urban Decay's "Big Fatty" gives your lashes that full, thick, fake-eyelash look without flaking or clumping. The formula is chock-full of moisturizing agents like vitamin E and hemp seed oil that keep lashes from feeling brittle. "Mega Plush" by Maybelline offers the same results for a lot less money. Although it doesn't add special moisturizers, it is made with 40% less hard wax so lashes feel supple and almost soft after application. Although "Mega Plush" is an amazing dupe, it does require two or three applications before it gives the same dramatic effect as "Big Fatty."
6. Instead of: Ulta Legendary Lengths for $10 (but currently on sale for $5!)
"Legendary Lengths" by Ulta is a lengthening mascara without all the bells and whistles. It simply creates beautiful, long, defined lashes without clumping or drying out. New York Color "Sky Rise Lengthening" is a dupe that lives up to its name. It also lifts the lashes and creates a sky-high look for only about $3!
7. Instead of: Tarte Amazonian Clay Smart for $19
Tarte's "Amazonian Clay Smart" delivers volume and length naturally. It's made with Amazonian clay to help replenish and condition your eyelashes. "One by One" by Maybelline gives you the same results for less. Although it's not made with clay, it conditions with its vitamin C formula. Even though neither mascara clumps, they both only last for about half the day — so be sure to keep a tube in your purse for a quick midday reapplication!
