Although the idea of having to start a fire without the use of a remote control sounds antiquated to some people, there still may be plenty of times when you find yourself needing to start a fire the old-fashioned way. If you have a traditional fireplace, you’re out camping, or just want to warm up by the backyard fire pit, try using a cotton ball to get the fire going! Start by spreading petroleum jelly over a cotton ball, leaving just the area that you are holding uncovered. Throw the cotton ball in the fireplace or fire pit and light a fire as you normally would. The petroleum jelly-coated cotton ball will burn for about 2–3 minutes, allowing your fire to really get roaring!
