You can find just about anything on online groups like Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace, including free back-to-school supplies. In the search bar, enter “free school supplies,” choose what looks good, and connect with the seller.
You could also find community events where organizations or companies are hosting back-to-school giveaways. Some people have moving sales where they just want to get rid of supplies for free. Ta-da!

Every July, Wireless Zone locations (a Verizon authorized dealer) hold a free backpack giveaway. This year, the event will take place on Sunday, July 27, 2025. The giveaway takes place from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. (local) at Wireless Zone locations across the U.S.

FreeCycle is basically a place for people to give things away, and that includes school supplies. I’ve found people giving away crayons, pens, binders, and highlighters.

Operation Homefront is a non-profit organization that helps military families through financial assistance and ongoing support programs. Through their Back-to-School Brigade, every year (for the past 18 years), they distribute free school supplies to military children nationwide.
Eligible members’ dependents can get free school supplies like backpacks, pens, notebooks, pencils, and crayons. You have to register a kindergarten through 12th-grade student enrolled in a Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) school for the 2025/2026 school year.
