Who knew that one of the cheapest items in your kitchen could do so many things? I’m talking about your everyday clean-up item: a simple sponge! Because sponges are so absorptive, yet very sturdy, they can be used for a host of different tasks around your home. The ability to absorb and hold moisture makes the common sponge your best friend. I like the fact that a sponge can be thrown in the dishwasher to rid it of bacteria. I also like that it’s inexpensive, can easily be replaced when worn out, and is not dangerous to have around the kids!
Here are seven more reasons to love sponges—they can do way more than clean up spills!
1. Use it as an ice pack
Freeze a sponge, place it in a Ziploc bag, and use it as a temporary ice pack! This works especially well in school lunchboxes. If your child accidentally throws it away, no worries! They’re cheap and easy to replace.
2. Extend the life of your bar soap
I hate the mess that wet bar soaps make. To avoid the cleanup, keep a sponge in your shower and place your bar of soap on top of the sponge. When you do this, bar soap will dry quicker and last longer.
3. Seal envelopes
Don’t like licking envelopes? Me neither! Wet a sponge (not dripping wet) and touch lightly to an envelope to seal. This works like a charm!
4. Remove pet hair
Take a damp sponge and rub over hairy furniture in a circular motion. Pet hair will collect on the sponge and can easily be rinsed off.
5. Decrease refrigerator moisture
Place a clean sponge in your refrigerator’s veggie drawer where moisture accumulates. This will keep your vegetables crisper longer!
6. Absorb umbrella water
This is one of my favorite tips! Keep a sponge where you park your umbrella on a rainy day and let the sponge absorb the excess rain without making a puddle on your floor! Or place a sponge in your umbrella rack to absorb extra rain!
7. Use as a packing barrier
Pack your breakables with small cut pieces of damp sponge. The sponge pieces will dry and conform around the breakables for a tighter protective fit.
