Meet Jessica Hacker
Meet extreming couponing’s Jessica Hacker from Caldwell, ID. Jessica lives a rural lifestyle (you know, the kind with cows, horses, chickens, pigs, cats, dogs), oh and her husband, their 2 yr old daughter and 3 teenage step-sons! Jessica is an ex-title agent who now stays-at-home; a feat that wouldn’t have been financially possible without her couponing skills!
I spoke with Jessica and asked her how she prepared for the camera crew’s arrival! She reported that she prepped for an entire week for her all-eyes shopping trip at her local Albertsons. She maximized her savings by ordering coupons online, rolling Catalina offers and using 18 sets of the store’s double coupons, which allow Jessica to double a manufacturer coupon up to $1.00 in value.
Jessica personal-record-setting purchase totaled $680 and included 6 gallons of milk, 7 lbs of hamburger, lots of spaghetti sauce and 56 cups of yogurt (which she estimates to be only a 2 week supply at her house)! Jessica did a whopping 18 total transactions and when I asked her “How long did that take to checkout?!” She said she had an awesome cashier and an exclusive checkout lane (reserved only for shoppers with entourages of cameramen, producers and sound booms) and her total checkout was just about an hour long. I’ll watch Extreme Couponing premiere on April 6th with anticipation to see how low Jessica’s total goes, but she did let me know that after the show, she submitted six $5 rebates from Snapple which turned her overall grocery bill into a Money-Maker!!
Jessica’s Extreme Couponing stockpile
Jessica’s stockpile is valued at $20,000 and that’s no estimate! Jessica has tracked every cent of her spending during her 2 years as an extreme couponer! She says, “it's one thing to master couponing; it's another thing to master your stockpile. Never let your stockpile take over you.” I asked Jessica where she keeps all of the groceries that she says could last her family 8 whole months and she explained that it’s spread throughout her pantry, garage, closets and even underneath beds! She says, "The day her daughter realizes her bed is full of barbecue sauce and crackers will be a bad day".
After speaking with Jessica, I’m very confident that she’s going to look poised and professional, but behind the scenes it wasn’t all smooth sailing! As I mentioned, Jessica did 18 separate transactions in order to use as many of Albertson’s double-coupons as possible. Jessica waited anxiously for Albertson’s corporate offices to give her approval for all the transactions. . . and waited. . . . and waited. It wasn’t until the night before the cameras arrived that Jessica got the green light from corporate. Needless to say, she stayed up late doing all the calculations to make for the perfect trip!
The Menu Master!
Jessica is the master of her household in every sense of the word. She’s got the budget ($160/month to feed a family of 6) and the menu down to a science! She hopes that when people see what she purchases, that it will make sense and they’ll see the method to her madness! Not only did Jessica shop around her menu, but after the long-day at the grocery store, the cameras filmed as she and her family prepared a meal together. Family is Jessica’s number one priority, and she hopes that will be evident in her segment!
I asked Jessica to impart some of her wisdom to those who are interested in beginning on their own “extreme couponing” journey. Jessica says to “Start small. I remember when I started, I felt the need to go get every single deal from every store. When I stopped and focused on one store, that’s when I truly succeeded!”
