Painting with your toddler can be so much fun. But chances are, the paint at some point will go directly into his or her mouth. And while the packaging might say it is non-toxic, you still won’t take any relief in those words unless you made the paint yourself.

But wait a minute–what is this? You CAN make your own finger paints perfect for little hands (and mouths)! And you don’t need to be an artist or crafting goddess to do so. Just be the dynamite mom you already are, and go grab these items from your cupboard!

What you will need:

  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1/2  cup of sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of salt
  • 2 cups cold water
  • 2 cups hot water
  • Food Coloring
  • Small bowls
  • Paper…lots of paper!

Slowly mix your flour, sugar, and salt into a bowl and stir in the cold water. Once it is mixed well, stir in the warm water. Divide the mixture into separate dishes and add 2-3 drops of food coloring per dish. Stir well until the color is the hue you wish it to be. You are ready to begin!

I like to tape down paper to the kitchen floor so it does not shift while my child is painting. Let them dig right in!  With this much fun, you might be inspired to jump in and create something yourself! So mix up a batch of edible finger paints this weekend and see what memories you can create. You know, a refrigerator always looks so much nicer with a bright finger painting hanging on the front of it!
