Best 4.5-Star+ Amazon Deals
Can you trust Amazon reviews?
As with any online marketplace, you might find fake reviews. Amazon's been doing a lot to root out fake reviews, though, including allowing only shoppers who've actually shopped on Amazon within the past 12 months to post reviews.
So, if a product has both a high number (think 100 or more) and a high rating, that's a good starting point and a sign that the product is of high quality or at least does what it promises to do. Emphasis on " good starting point ," though.
Best Ways to Check Amazon Reviews
Keep the following in mind while you read product reviews during Prime Big Deal Days (or any time you're shopping on Amazon):
-
Look at when reviews were posted. If a bunch of 5-star reviews just poured in recently, and older reviews have much lower ratings, be suspicious that the seller is trying to inflate their rating.
-
Look for "verified purchase" labels. These labels are added to reviews when Amazon has verified the shopper actually made the purchase.
-
Filter by the most recent reviews. If all recent reviews are poor, it's a sign that the product design or quality isn't as good as it used to be.
-
Look at the distribution of reviews. If a product has a lot of 5-star reviews but also a lot of 1- or 2-star reviews, be sure to read those 1-star reviews. If those low-star reviews are pointing out consistent issues with the product, take those 5-star reviews with a grain of salt.
-
If you have time, click on the reviewers' profiles. If they've reviewed a lot of products and sent in a lot of detailed, high-quality reviews, that's a good sign the reviewer takes their reviews seriously (and that you can take their review seriously).
