When I first learned I could sell my used empty ink cartridges for cash, I was quite surprised. I was even more surprised to learn I can also resell UN-used ink cartridges I no longer need. Here’s how:

1. Sell 'em back and make some quick cash!

Toner Buyer

Toner Buyer‘s website is not the greatest, but it’s an awesome place to sell your used ink cartridges AND any new cartridges you no longer need. You can make anywhere from $0.25 to $22 for selling used ink and toner cartridges with Toner Buyer. Just fill out a form online (the above image shows just a portion of what they take) to receive pre-paid mailing labels and free shipping instructions. For new unused ink cartridges you’ll get paid within 7 business days. For used empty cartridges you’ll get paid within 21 business days.

eBay is still one of the best ways to sell new or empty cartridges. Many sellers report being able to make more per cartridge by selling them on eBay and cutting out the middleman. However, it’s more work to list them, you have to take great photos and write clear instructions, and you need to oversee your listing and do the shipping yourself. But if you’re game for a bit of extra manual labor, definitely give eBay a try!

eCycle Group

At eCycle Group you can earn anywhere from $0.25 to $18 for used ink and toner cartridges (in general, you’ll earn more for toner cartridges than for ink cartridges). Their price list is on the site homepage so you can see up front how much you’ll make per cartridge. All you have to do is register online and eCycle Group will mail you postage-paid shipping labels and mailing instructions. You can get paid monthly so long as you’ve earned at least $25.

2. Recycle cartridges, help the Earth, and keep or donate your cash.

Ink Recycling

InkRecycling is all about collecting old ink cartridges in order to prevent the chemicals found in these containers from seeping into the ground and water when people dispose of them. Not only will you be helping the environment by sending in your old cartridges, you’ll get paid too. Mail your old cartridges in for free and get cash back. When you create your account, you’ll get a pre-paid mailing label and shipping container back by mail. Just send in your cartridges and you’ll get a check back.

US Recycling

Get up to $3 each for empty ink, and $12 each for empty toner cartridges at USRecycleInk. And, for new unused toner cartridges, you can earn up to $100! Choose to keep your cash or donate it to the school or charity of your choice. It’s easy to get a quote by calling the toll-free number on the website homepage or by taking a picture of your cartridge and uploading it to the site. Your quote will come back in 60 minutes, and you can accept or reject it and go from there.

With Empties4Cash you can collect your own and others' empty ink cartridges and send them in for cash. Your check will be issued two weeks after your shipment is received. As long as you’ve earned at least $5, you’re eligible to receive a check. One reason why this program is great is you can use it to earn cash for your own needs or as a fundraiser for your favorite school or charity.

3. Recycle them for cash or points at your local office supply store.

Office Depot/Office Max

The free rewards program at Office Depot/Office Max allows you to earn 200 rewards points for each cartridge you recycle. Your monthly limit for earning is 10 cartridges, and you have to spend at least $10 that same month in order to receive your rewards. Your rewards will post to your account within 5 business days after the last day of the month. For every 1,000 points you earn, you’ll receive a $10 store rewards certificate (good towards future purchases).

At Staples, the free program is even simpler. As long as you spend at least $30 on ink every 180 days, you can turn in up to 10 cartridges per month and earn $2 per cartridge. Payment is issued monthly, and you can turn in your cartridges in person at a Staples store or online.
